This hard drive on amazon is stupidly cheap, but all looks legit.
Theres no picture but I think it is the same model as this:

It's £39.99 not £29.99? Still reasonable though.
#2
The actual pricing is £39.99 unfortunately.

Good find PlanetDeal - I'm sure you'll be formally welcomed to the site in due time, but in the mean time here's a pic of the rather ugly looking drive...

This is the ATMT that lit so many fires a couple of months back when it was sold as a 300Gb for £57 at Amazon. Be aware it has a WD internally and does NOT spin down automatically when your PC/Mac sleeps. Search here for the details.

Its a little noisy but better than most and does get pretty hot at times.
#5
These ATMT drives aren't as ugly as you might think and the drive inside the 300Gb versions were Western Digital. They're reasonably quiet and I would say this is definitely worth the money!

Thanks for the original post PlanetDeal and Welcome to HotUKDeals by the way :)
#6
There's a switch on the drive casing if you want to turn it off. You can set XP to allow you to do this without having to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" warning.
#7
...and doesn't it make a wonderfully alarming clunk when you do switch it off...
#8
I really haven't had any nasty noises or problems with mine. It doesn't get too hot, in fact it's on now and the case is barely warm.

When you switch it on you can hear it spin up, but that's it. No clunking here :)
#9
It does make a resounding clunk when you switch it off. Couldn't think of a better word to describe it :)
#10
I have one of these but it is branded as a Gericom and has a Samsung 160GB hard-drive inside. I got mine from Aldis about 18 months ago.

Can confirm it has a switch on the side to turn it off. I never go through add/remove hardware, too lazy.

If I am right in saying this should have a 3 year warranty too.

This is very tempting, works out at just under 25p/gb
I had a look around and found this also @ the 25p/gb mark
250gb Lacie USB 2.0 £64.85 delivered:
http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~122015~/
Seagate 320gb usb2.0 25p/gb £79.48 delivered

and
Freecom 400gb usb 2.0 26p/gb £110 delivered

Thanks for the comparison and links to other drives schizoboy. There's also a post by margamboy in the forum somewhere to compare others using Gb/pence.
#13
I went for this, very impulsive buy, present for a relative which I will be posting out to them, does it come with any superfluous extras like, oversized packaging, manuals or anything else heavy, just wondering.
#14
No, if it's like the 300Gb drive, it's compact but well protected in the box. Amazon's own box might be oversized though, but they pack things carefully [in my experience].
#15
Mentions on MSE thread about external usb 2.0 drives from staple stores:
Seagate 400GB for £89.99 (22.5p/gb)
and
Seagate 200gb for £49.99 (20p/gb)
#16
Problem with Staples offers, is they seem to be certain stores / regions. Iv found it really difficult to get things in the past.

200gb Seagate for under £50 makes me want to go searching.

No three year warranty - that's an Aldi/Lidl speciality but this may have a 2 year warranty? Not sure.

Oh and Gericom is an Aldi brand not like this ATMT.

Get the SKU # and phone Staples CS they are quite good but tend to be let down by the drones at branch level.

Picked up a LaCie 250GB external drive for £59.99 in Plymouth Staples on Thursday. Still had plenty of stock left.

I ran a backup over night and in the morning you could have fried an egg on my 300Gb  but that may have been the fault of the software not the drive.

ANyway I don't use them now I stick to my shelf of WD My Book Premium drives.
#21
I've just bought it, it's the chepest and good value for the money!!
Not delivery cost!
good Bargain
#22
Can someone post a link to the Staples £49.99 one as I couldn't find it on their website, or is it in-store only?

Thanks
#23
Nearly all good Staples offers seem to be in store only with the website being mostly a rip off.

Play do a Western 250GB for £69.99 and Misco do a Lacie 250GB for £61. I'm off to Staples this afternoon :pirate:

What about this one

£1928? bargain of the year! :-D

Buffalo mostly make memory and networking equipment but in the last few years have done alot of storage devices with some very good NAS boxes available which have linux as an OS so can run ftp's etc.
That buffalo will be well built, just not as aesthetically pleasing as the WD.

Hmmm - a little above my budget for a hard drive. Does it have gold platters or a diamond head or something

I picked up a 300gig Buffale Drivestation from Play for 70 odd quid a few months ago and it's been great.

Very quiet under normal circumstance, bit of whirring when heavily using (multiple operations all on the drive etc) but not loud. Powers off with your comp, comes with auto backup software. Gets hot but not scarily so.

Was a good buy.
#35
I'm not so sure this item is the one in the photo...

Amazon also has this...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ATMT-363N-160GB-Network-Drive/dp/B0007OJY9M

And if you read the descriptions carefully, the physical dimensions vary (slightly, but not by a great deal).

Here's the Seagate that Staples are doing. It's clearance stock, only 1 left at my local store. Will research some more and maybe purchase tomorrow :geek:

What make/model hdd does this atmt product have?
Ordered one without checking :(

All gone now.

Dispatched this morning using the Home Delivery Network

A couple of months ago I missed the last ATMT amazon deal for a 300Gb drive so this 160Gb box found by PlanetDeal is a much appreciated post. I didn't waste time ordering.

Unfortunately, amazon stock is now depleted. If like me, you find the sleek, modern design very appealing, don't despair. I'm sure there will be more ATMT external drive deals from amazon on the way.

In the meantime check out ATMT's drives.
