Carphone Warehouse are obviously trying to get rid of the 16GB 3G models of the iPhone before it is superseded by the 16GB 3G S. This is available online and offline.

The following table shows the difference between each contract available with the iPhone.

o2 allow you to change your contract after 9 months, this means that it is sometimes cheaper/not much more expensive to take out a more expensive contract per month, to allow you to save money up front on paying for the hanset. (This was initially pointed out on MSE - [http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-iphone] but the image below also accounts for the new 3G S phone.)

The contracts this applies to are highlighted in grey.
Also, Red = Only available from Carphone Warehouse and Blue = Only available from o2.

Remember cashback sites Quidco/TopCashBack for £30-£45 as well.

Feel free to vote this cold, if you know of a better deal.
This site is to find the best deal on a specific product available,
Eg. 6 x Coca Cola cans for £1 would get voted hot, not cold because you can get 6 x Roller Cola cans for 50p elsewhere.

Hope this helps anyone looking.

Has it not been like this for a while now? I thought they announced this a couple of months ago.

The tariffs are terrible. You would expect Unlimited everything for £73 a month. Why not buy an o2 contract for about £20 a month and buy a Pay and Go iPhone?

Because the prices on PAYG are:
* iPhone 3G 8GB - £342.50
* iPhone 3G S 16GB - £440.40
* iPhone 3G S 32GB - £538.30

So take your £20 600 minute/1200 texts/web simplicity contract and add, for a 24 month period:
* iPhone 3G 8GB - £14.27 per month (£34.27)
* iPhone 3G S 16GB - £18.35 per month (£38.35)
* iPhone 3G S 32GB - £22.43 per month (£44.43)

and compare it to getting the same on contract over 24 months: (£34.26 for 600 mins, 500 texts and web)
* iPhone 3G 8GB - Phone free, so £34.26 per month.
* iPhone 3G S 16GB - Phone £87.11, so £37.89 per month.
* iPhone 3G S 32GB - Phone £175.19, so £41.56 per month.

Works out cheaper in every case over 2 years.

except with simplicity you are only in contract for 30 days, you get 1200 texts, and its actually £19.58, not £20

Can you jailbreak thie 3G iphone... so £0 for fone and no contract?

You can jailbreak the 3G iPhone, yes, but you wouldn't get the phone for free or no contract.

One or the other, ie, no contract but pay for phone OR contract and free phone.

Okay fair enough, it's 30 day contract, but I did answer the question I was asked,

"Why not buy an o2 contract for about £20 a month and buy a Pay and Go iPhone?".
- Because there's not much in it.

Plus you don't have to shell out £500+ in one go.

The interest that you could earn in an ISA would probably negate the price difference.

or do what i did ad get acontract with 1000 mins, 100 texts and unlimited internet from o2 and a free phone (a year a go i got samsung soul), and sell the phone for £200+ and then buy an iphone and use your contract sim in !!!

respect for the price comparison, Im not sure if Im reading the table right, but in the 9 month column presumably it has the total price for remaining months (i.e. 15 months on a 24 contract and 9 on an 18 contract).

wouldnt it be easier if there were a column adding that to the price for the first 9, allowing us to see the total price for the whole contract, and then the average per month?

also, am i right in saying you can only downgrade once to the next cheapest tariff, throughout your contract?

Be interesting to see how much pre-owned 8gb 3g iphones will go for after the 3gs has come out.

It might even make it worthwhile.

Surprised Apple are throwing away the chance to be market leader in the smart phone arena.

Very few people are willing to be a$$ intruded by o2 or carphone warehouse, the newer phones are catching up.

Note: the 16Gb 3G is NOT being discontinued - it remains the cheapest iPhone with the 3GS (16Gb and 32Gb) being the other options.

So this isn't a 'sell out' deal - it's just a similar deal that's been on offer (for mugs who'll sign for 2 YEARS!)

As for 8Gb 3H iPhones I'd expect them to remain around £250 in decent nick 2nd-hand - anything cheaper than that will be tatty/faulty or a BARGAIN for some time yet...

Yes it is.

It's actually the 8GB that will be the cheapest option.

See available contracts @ http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/paymonth.html

Any ideas of value of factory unlocked 8gb 3g's?

Here in Guernsey our iPhones all come unlocked to all networks.

Is there any difference between a jailbroken 3G and a factory unlocked one?

Except there isn't a contract phone from O2 other than the iPhone which is worth over £200 ofc...

A Samsung Soul is worth maybe £70 on a good day - that's a LONG way short of £200

The 5800 Expressmusic is worth maybe £100 - the new Samsung's MAYBE a touch over £100 for anyone who will put up with their ******** software etc.

except i said about a year ago, and got £210 for the soul :thumbsup:

The price for the iphone is nonsense, i mean something like £400 on its own or to get it free you have to pay £70 a month. As someone else said for £70 a month i want free everything and a free ps3??? There are phone contracts doing that, that are £30 a month. I love APPLE but they are taking the absolute **** with the price of this :x
