16GB 5" Samsung Galaxy Tablet - £139.00 using code TD-MXTN @ Tesco

rob252rob252

Tesco have dropped the price of this 16gb model from £229 and using the above code gets the price down even further... Not a bad buy for the spec. :)

The link doesn't work; but if the OP means this model:

    http://www.tesco.com/direct/samsung-galaxy-tablet-5-16gb-wifi/215-4603.prd?skuId=215-4603&pageLevel=sku&_requestid=414633

then it is NOT a Tablet, it is primarily a Media Player (think of it as Samsung's version of the iPod Touch), although you can access the Internet on it..
It is wifi only, not 3G, and to answer the question about upgrading then the answer is trickier. It comes with Android 2.2 (FroYo), and although other countries got an update to Gingerbread v2.3.6, it was never released in the UK.
I've got one, and had to update it myself by using Odin.

Re: the above. To open the link, right click on it and choose 'Open link in new tab', because it doesn't seem to work otherwise.

See, this is the problem with these 'community' ROMS. Unless it's a very popular device (like a San Francisco or such) the best you can hope for is some half-baked ROM that offers little gain over the stock ROM, and breaks stuff. And if you have to unlock the bootloader that usually seems to be a one-way street (that's what it seems like to me, I could be wrong), which can have an affect with warranty issues.

It's a good discount but to me it seems a funny form factor, if you want a tablet 7 inches makes more sense, if you want a portable media player then you could get a cheap android phone like the G300 and an SD card for less.

True, but they are different devices. This is the Samsung version of the Apple Touch that seems to have just been renamed as a tablet.

If someone wants a small 5" multimedia device to slip in their pocket they might find the 7" just too big.

Heat added because this is the cheapest I have seen this device (although the older 4" version has been cheaper)

Good deal but when used to Super Amoled the screen would not be any good. think this is running Android 2.3.1.midget gem

Hot for not being a Ipod Touch :)

Android fan, but this is a shocking deal. 150 quid for an arm a8 processor and android 2.2?

Pay 20 quid extra and get a nexus 7 with specs over 5x this.

Isn't a 5 inch tablet just a phone without the phoney bits X)

lol, 5" is a big phone, not a tablet :D

Is it worth the upgrade? I went to Gingerbread and once a lot of apps were installed the unit got a somewhat ponderous.

It is a nice machine, good pocket size, weighs the same as the Note(s), but I think £139 is a bit pricey even though this deal is for the 16gb whereas previously they've been for the 8GB. Newer model on the way shortly too.

I got the 8gb version of this in HMV a couple of months ago. It only cost £100, so for a start I don't think this is a hot deal price wise. To me it should be about £100 or so...

    Pros
is a great little player,, nice big screen for video, sound is excellent through speakers and headphones. I would say it is a usable, but quirky tablet, very nice size to carry about (kindle app is really good), does iplayer downloads (via dolphin). Also has an fm radio, and sd card slot, and very good battery (I get about 9 hours video, with headphones in and airplane mode on)

    Cons
Official froyo is rather old now, in comparison to Jellybean on my Nexus S it is VERY slow, and laggy at times. It's a real shame they haven't updated it as its a potentially great bit of kit (I will probably try the Xda root thing sometime), I find the Ram is probably a bit low to, as I find clearing it on Task Manager helps improves things a lot...but One shouldn't have to keep doing this

I think if you see it as mainly a media player (as I do) it's great, as a tablet experience, less so
