This is my first post. Just ordered one of these for my parents, also got 5% Quidco too. Been looking for a larger screened laptop for a while. This is the best deal I have found for a 17" laptop. I just ordered it 2 days ago when it was £364.99. I thought that was a good deal, now they have reduced it even further.

Not to mention a 17.3" screen!
I paid £340 for my acer laptop in april which is 17.3" aswell, but this is HP and they seem to be pricey.
but my Acer does its job and am very happy. I am tempted to buy but wife would nag on and on if you know what I mean!

Intel Pentium P6000 @ 1.87GHz

PassMark - CPU Mark: 1416

Pentium Dual-Core T4400 @ 2.20GHz 1,502

There's not much in it. I'd rather have a new one.

Buy.com is a very reputable US site (comparable to play.com over here, I'd reckon) which was recently acquired by Rakuten, the Japanese giant.

Absolutely no reason to worry here. Plenty of reviews online too.

Would it be worth while upgrading the ram to 4gb? Heat added by the way...

Bought the same G72 laptop a while back from comet for £390/400 can't remember... except it was better spec. i3, 320GB HDD, 3GB RAM.. would rather pay the extra £40/50.

Good laptop though... not great for hardcore users, but for a fast every day user it's ideal. Not had any problems at all... been using it for about 4-5 weeks now. Stays ice cool, good battery life, performs well all round. only thing I would pick holes in... is the bloody mouse pad. Its so annoying. It's built in/smoothed over... and is a pain. Still not got used to it yet. You can't judge very well where the pad starts/ends... let alone the virtual scroll.

What a daft question. This is hot because it is a good deal. This is an outstanding deal for a quality 17" notebook. To compare this against a couple of Refurbished 15.6" notebooks beggars belief. What are they 1388 x 768? The HP has a 1600 x 900 screen, better build quality and definitely better support. DSG refurb!! - I wouldn't trust most of them to put it back in the box, let alone 'refurbish'.

I'd rather have the Samsung E452 from play for £30 more (before cashback etc). If you're not bothered about having the 17.3" screen with the slightly higher resolution, you can have an i3 350m processor that has a benchmark performance of 150% of the P6000. Samsungs have much better reliability than HP too, as they make most of teh components themselves that go into their own laptops.

In either case, a £17 2Gb Kingston memory upgrade from Play is well worth doing.

monkeyhanger75, will that memory definitely fit this Laptop? ie how can you be sure it is the correct 'pin' number? Also, I can see that memory runs at 1333MHz but I can't see what speed the memory in the Laptop runs at. Just wondering how you can be sure they're compatible? Or, when you said 'upgrade', did you mean that the current memory could be 'replaced' by the memory from Play and as such if someone wanted to go to 4Gb then they'd have to buy two of those... 1 to 'replace' the original and 1 for the spare slot?

Thank you in advance.

Nice to see a Northerner on here by the way :D although you're a Southerner to me! :p

I have a similar lappy and I love it. but get a mouse the touch pad is a little umm Touchy !!

I have used a couple of HP/Compaq laptops recently and the battery has died just after the warranty period, after I Googled the machine it seems that there are many models of HP laptops that suffer problematic batteries.
Check this model isn't one before ordering else you'll be spending another £40 for a new battery in a year or so.

blasphemous - maybe not a southerner to you for location - I live in North Shields!

Play have Kingston 2Gb DDR3 SODIMM 204 pin non ECC for £16.99 - that's the one you need for the Samsung and the HPs. Almost ordered a HP but couldn't get away with the mouse pad thingy and was told that laptop reliability isn't great by our IT Dept (they maintain 350 HP desktops on site, which are fine, they switched from HP laptops to Dell/Toshiba though.

There is a 2Gb HP G72 at Comet for £399 which has a 1Gb unit in each of it's 2 slots, so this HP might be the same (cant remember the exact variant of the G72. If you try to upgrade one of those, you'll have to bin a 1Gb unit e.g buy a 2Gb add on and you'll only have 3Gb memory.

Hopefully this model has 1 x 2Gb module installed in one of its slots like the Samsung has, leaving the other one spare to upgrade.

Just clarified that this does use 1 x 2Gb module by going to the offer site. If a 17" screen is a must (with teh slightly higher resolution) then this seems ok, But if you're looking to watch 720P HD films and everything else then the Samsung is better.
