The later games were made after EA had killed westwood studios. It was also a new engine and a 4 year gap between Generals and C&C 3.

Bought these months ago and still haven't touched them along with other games.

Will these run under Windows 10?

Be prepared to faff around getting these to work on modern operating systems, lots of tweaks and community patches required. Still amazing games!

Red alert 2 my favourite doesn't work properly in Windows 10. There are some work arounds but nothing perfect.

Very true - it has the habit of letting you play for a while and then systematically murdering your entire squad, due to the original copy detection software hardwired into the original. But it's still great value. It's been this cheap (or cheaper) around and about for the last year or so, though...

Red alert was my fav, sole survivor mod was crazy, turned a unit into Ace Ventura and everytime you clicked on him, Alrighhhht then
Renegades was so good, esp online, best MP experience i had with working as a team to repair your base and the mods you can get to add new levels, esp the Ren Alert version which is free by the way, its basically a Renegade version of the Red Alert game.
Red Alert 2 at uni was fun. Would team up with my mate and do 3 or 4 player online, he'd usually be the one being slaughtered, then i'd come over with 50 tanks

Go to cncnet to get a community launcher to get RA2 and previous c&c's working on Windows 10. It also fixes multiplayer!

also recommend 8 bit armies remake of c & c games by the people from westwood

Renegade was awesome when the servers were supported. Wish they would remake it. No better team based first person strategy game. Being able to plant a nuke or repair the base suiting every play style.

Too many hackers and cheaters came along and ruined it to the point of shut down.

C&C 1 was immense on PS1 link up on two screens.

Love all the games but my least favourite is when they first introduced the kraken, and then Aliens. Lost direction at that point.

Thank you for posting this!

Decided before Christmas that this year santa was going to get me a nice little 22 inch monitor, and I was going to set my little i3 "media centre" pc up and actually use it for some old games. Literally set it all up today once Amazon had delivered my keyboard and mouse, and been downloading Company of Heroes, Dawn of War and a few other titles this afternoon. This has just made my day mate. X)

Just some info on how to run and play online on modern operating systems -

CNC Net is a great resource for patching the older C&C games (up to Red Alert 2) plus Dune 2000 to work online. The first three games (C&C, Red Alert and Tiberian Sun) have all been released as freeware so the installers will give you the option of patching the Origin release or a CD version or can just download the whole game for you. You have the option of downloading the multiplayer component separately so there's no need to get the single player campaigns if you just want to play online. For Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge you'll need the games already installed (from Origin or CD) as they're not freeware.

The more recent games (Generals, C&C3, Red Alert 3) used to use GameSpy, which was shut down in May 2014. Fortunately the Revora Network stepped up to provide new multiplayer support using a launcher over at CNC Online.

Yes and no. It takes a lot of work and browsing forums from 2010 but I managed to get them all up and running on 10. Apart from c&c 4 that is but to be honest I didn't put any effort into that one as it was, and this is putting it nicely, a bit toss.

Thanks for the recommendation, going to check it out. Loved Westwood Studios games, moved on to C&C after playing Dune 2 back in the day, later EA killed them with their greed.

Ah I miss the days of RA2!
Really had a 'craving' to play it over the past few days too, but only have a Mac. Shame.

i still recall that panic alarm in generals when nuclrar bomb facility detected and you had a short time to blow it up or get wiped???? oh i loved generals..... was gutted after buying the later games and they were so rubbish. i never knew why. someone said new programmers. makes sense as i loved dune. but how did they ruin it??? surely same game but new graphics and level design was all that was needed?
#28
also days at uni playing red alert. two computers linked up. building lots of electricity plants to survive their attack and the glee wuen your sole warrior parachuted in and destoyed everything after you knocked their electricity grid out! the guard dogs!!!

while we are here... what do people think of company of heroes and any other games they recommene? i enjoyed coh but later on it gets manic in the mission i am stuck on. it might be the last. are you supposed to use the pause button to change orders or is that cheating as you cannot do it in multi player. just the pc always has an advantage when so much going on! Maybe i am too old so play turn based games like xcom and panzer tactics hd mainly now and shy away from rts.

In a large part it was EA's binning off of Westwood Studios but also, more importantly, when EA purchased Westwood back in the late 90's they started to dictate release timetables and content. This saw many of the WW team jump ship until the final WW developer left in 2003 - right after the launch of Generals.

It would have been interesting to have seen what journey Westwood would have taken us on with the evolution of the franchise had EA not interfered. It may have remained close to it's Dune 2 roots...but then again they may have evolved further away anyway.

EA's subsequent releases were mostly playable but just not the same. C&C 4 was the worst in my opinion. I have no clue what they were thinking (or smoking) when they released that pile of junk - absolutely painful. C&C 3 and Red Alert 3 were for the most part at least fairly fun and playable. I gave up after giving C&C 4 plenty of chances to reel me in.

We just need either a fan made or original WW developer made Dune 2 rebirth and I'd be happy :)
