Was looking for a netbook under £250 but then called into ASDA (for groceries!) to find this 17" notebook which normally retails for £299 at other stores and has been reduced to £222 (previous price was £247).

Very good price for the range of features, and this is perfect for my dad as the screen is very large, clear and crisp, and his use is not That heavy duty. If you were to plan on using more intensive programs then buying an extra 2gig RAM would be a good idea and make the machine pretty nice indeed.

SPEC:

Screen 17.3" (e-Machine, WXGA+ TFT LCD)
OS Windows Vista Home Premium
RAM 1GB
Hard Drive 160GB
DVD Rewriter

Integrated Webcam
4x USB 2.0 Ports
Intergrated Stereo Speakers
1 External VGA Port
Kensington lock slot
Charge Time 2.5 Hours
Warranty 12 Months emachine Warranty
Battery Life 2.5-hours
Weight 3.68kg

Received two excellent reviews: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/laptops-and-netbooks/emachines-g420-712035/review
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/emachines-g420-review-50000686/

The cons of this machine are the OS being Windows Vista and also the size of the machine makes it not that portable, but maybe it suits your needs like it suited my dads :) (also the RAM as ive mentioned, but thats easily remedied)

Hope it helps!

Specs not great: pretty weak processor, only 1GB RAM, only 160GB hard drive and Vista, but no competition at all for a laptop with 17" screen at this price.

Hot!

voted hot for price but vista will be a real struggle with 1gb RAM

Need to spend at least an extra £20 for ram upgrade. Semprons are worse than Celerons, IMO.
#7
my other half bought one we upgraded ram to 2 gig and it is fine for the price you cant complain

Granted it's a 17" screen, but it's a 17" with a 1440*900 resolution - some 13" laptops now come with that res!

On saveonlaptops.co.uk, they call this a gaming laptop LOL.

Minesweeper is awesome on this lol

my laptop has 1gb RAM and 160gb hard drive and Vista runs perfectly well on it. It's never run slow or anything. I dont use it for gaming, but i watch youtube vids, iplayer etc and often have several different sites running at the same time. Never a problem.

So, don't assume!

Crazy price for a 17" laptop, memory at 1GB shouldn't be an issue as long as there isn't too much naff-ware pre installed, RAM is cheap these days so whacking another gig in it shouldn't be a problem.

Semprons aren't the greatest CPU, but this is a budget machine at a great price, 17" screen at 1440x900 isn't too bad to use and would suit someone with less than perfect eyesight.

I have 2 17" laptops, one runs 1600x900 and is lovely, the other runs 1920x1200, the latter can be a pain for browsing as you have to manually zoom in with your neck lol

As a cheap laptop for the parents etc you can't go wrong at the price - heat added

1gb with vista ram will surely slow this lappy to a crawl, but a gd price, great for surfing, usless for anything else really, if didnt already buy a netbook for my daughter, then tempting
#23
Hey guys, they were just coming in to my local ASDA so maybe taking some time getting into yours. Though they were just coming in they had sold lots already... i dunno how people find out about these deals so quick!
#24
i got one yesterday for my son, he just wants it for the internet mainly.

Bought 2 of them at £247 3 weeks ago at Asda living Newport South Wales and they are better than described. they do what you want. We only wanted them for presents for Xmas for 2 kids who spend time surfing and don't play games. So they are ideal. Got no money left now for Xmas but as long as the kids are happy thats all I say.
#26
Are these the ones with the horrible hotkeys on the left that make it impossible to touch type?
#27
I dont think so.. the laptop has gone to my dads office now so I cant confirm.

Just to let you all know the London Stores have stock - I am buying another one for my granddad now :)
#28
anyone know which asda in b-ham have these in stock?
#29
Sorry don't know about Birmingham, give them a call?

In London, Park Royal has lots of stock and Wembley are getting more stock in.
