i agree, this seems like a really good deal and a memory upgrade would make it a better laptop, anyone know on average how much memory upgrades cost?

Does anyone know how this deal compares to the recent Dell (Vostro 1520 for £349) deal?

Thanks

i think the dell has now gone up

you do know that windows xp, and vista on run 3gb RAM max.

windows 7 is 64 bit which will allow usage of 4gb, but xp and vista cant use it on 32bit.

So you wud have 4gbs, but only really be using 3gb.

Also this laptops graphics are pretty poor. Not really a bargain tbh.

I know, i already ordered a Dell, but was wondering if this is a better spec as someone has asked me for the Dell.

or of course get 64bit xp or vista and it uses all 4gb...the same as windows 7...

Windows 7 comes as 32 bit or 64bit, exactly the same as Vista or XP which have 64bit versions too. Intel 4500 graphics are fine for anything you would want to do and runs a lot of games too. For the money this is a fab laptop.

I'd definitely take a Toshiba over a Sony. I prefer reliability and service, but the Vaios do tend to look prettier.

I'm in for one from Toshiba Direct, thanks foyzur!

Really tempted, as my laptop is playing up. Part of me fell in love with the apple macbook pro 17inch but when I see that this is £360 and the Apple £1900 I can't understand it nor in any way justify spending 6x the price!

Nice machine but can't be compared to that Dell due to screen size and they're for a different market/user. The Toshiba needs an extra 1 GB for sure. I'd then pop Windows 7 in for free until March 2010 and then revert later.

Might be worth consider going with John Lewis who do a 2nd year warranty in with the price www.johnlewis.com/230586565/Product.aspx

Toshibas are very well built.

Forgot to say...
FYI, please note the very short space bar on this keyboard, the recessed (rough feel) trackpad and the tiny enter key.
I had this laptop from Staples and after a week the keyboard was driving me crazy as its so uncomfortable for the reasons above so I returned it.

Cheers.

If you key in 'who makes the most reliable laptops' on 'cnet.com' it makes interesting reading, out of 75000 laptops in the survey between 2003 and 2007 there was little difference between lenovo (ibm) at the top and apple at the bottom, because there are so many common components.sony and Toshiba came joint second.
I recently bought a toshiba SATE P300D-21K from comet and so far i am very happy with it.

A couple of people have suggested this needs more memory. However, I have seen a laptop with a lesser processor, the same amount (2GB) of RAM and shared graphics, happily run multiple apps (e.g. IE, Office 2007, iTunes) simultaneously on Vista Premium.

So that potential buyers can identify whether they need to upgrade, would anyone who thinks that this needs more than 2GB be kind enough to explain what tasks they intend to perform that creates the need for greater memory, please? Thanks!

is this laptop capable of playing 1080p movies

Probably, but they won't display at 1080 because the screen resolution is only 1140x900.

I think is more like 1440 x 900. Not too sure though.

Oops yes it's 1440. Still doesn't help though as the 900 vertical resolution is the one that matters here.

It's not always as simple as that. Acers particularly are a nightmare, finding XP drivers etc.
