OK - please don't neg me just because you aren't the sort of person who buys top end Graphics cards. The point here is its the best price by £70 for the same GC.

This is generally rated as the highest performance card on the market. Custom PC place the 4870 x2 as the best buy extreme GC, but that is based on expectations that the price is more like £450.

Some other posts suggest free delivery to Hexus and AVforum members - thats £6.99 off the price I've posted. Look at (thanks Agharta)
http://www.avforums.com/forums/scan_offer.php
http://forums.hexus.net/scan-care-he...0-07-08-a.html

Based on my searches
Next best price for a GTX 295 is £389.99 at Play (for a Zotac).
Same card costs £444.99 + Ppostage at DABS or £477.24 plus postage at Overclockers

To be honest, I think you'd be a fool to buy one of these. Yes, PCs have the best graphics, but they're let down by the fact that there's practically nothing being released for them anymore. For the whole experience, you're much better buying an Xbox 360. PC gaming's been pretty much dead since the end of 2007. I recently sold my gaming hardware in exchange for a 360, and it's been great. XBox Live is fantastic, everything now Just Works with no faffing around with drivers and closing stuff or whatever first, and I've been reacquainted with genres that I previously believed to have been extinct. It's brilliant. Ultimately, enjoyment is what it's all about, and it seems to me that for maximum enjoyment, your money's best placed in console-land.

That said, good deal for those who can afford it. And, my god, is there something supremely awesome about running Crysis on a 42" 1080 TV with FSAA at 8x and with all the graphics set to full. Plus it's pretty good value compared to eight hits of coke. Hot from me.

the top 5 preorders at gameplay are all pc versions so its hardly dead, and the biggest selling game around is empire tw,killzone 2 is the only decent non pc game i can think of,considering resident evil 5;s out next month.

I agree , why spend so much on a graphic card when u can buy an XBOX 360 ... Move on ppl , PCs are not the best for gaming anymore

Whether pc's are best for gaming or not, the point is this is a great card and it's the cheapest, gets my 9 degrees.

There's always video editing capabilities and playing Blu-Ray, it's not ALL about gaming.

The pc gaming experience is so much better than any console. I am saying that even though I own a ps3 and xbox360. I have a relatively high end pc and use it far more than either.

Not going to vote either way on this however, it maybe cheaper than anywhere else but as far as bang for buck goes, I'm not all that impressed.

Didn't take long for the Xbox fans to appear and start their Xbox is better than a PC, Xbox is better than a PS3, Xbox is better than anything comments!!!
Good price for the card - have some heat and rep:):)

Going to +h as it is the cheapest place for the card.

I got my Sapphire 4870x2 for £351 when it first came out.. which isnt near the £450 you stated, although some branded ones do cost that... SAPPHIRE TECHNOLOGY Atomic HD 4870 X2 costing approx £620 :P

I've never played on an xbox 360, not going to get into that arguement.
Waiting for street fighter IV and resident evil 5 to come out on pc.. those should be fun.
#9
I guess it's a good price.
Just seems an awful lot of money for a graphics card.
You can buy a decent PC for this price

Sorry Snow I wasn't clear. The point was that at £450 the 295 didn't have enough extra performance to justify the extra £100 or so to move up from a 4870 x2. But at this price I think its the one to go for.

agreed with above pc gaming still rocks i own an xbox and i dont even play that anymore pc gaming is still the way to go for me. i had a gainward 7800 card and had quite some problems with it, but this is a bargain for a gtx 295 so i probably would buy this if i was looking a new card even tho i dont like gainward, maybe theyve improved.

Like to see you use some serious 3d graphics applications on the 360, you can use a PC for other things and not just game you know...

It's a bloody good price for this card! Not seen it under £400 anywhere. I bought mine (but BFG with 10 yr warranty) from scan for £414 a couple of months ago.

AWSOME card though, runs EVERYTHING at 1920x1200 with all settings maxed with no hiccups :) love it!

Please bare in mind to pair it with a decent CPU though, in my case the i7 920 OC'd to 3.2Ghz.

EDIT: I have 2 360's as well, one upstairs and one downstairs. There's a time and place for the console and the PC :)

But it's true, Xbox360s are better for games than PCs. Zero hassle, zero faff, much greater range of games, better games on offer. Choice and quality of games is far more important than image quality in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Xbox 360 zealot. I resisted moving on for years, spending sums of money that I don't want to think about in the process of maintaining a high-end gaming system. But it's just, although 2007 was fantastic, 2008 just produced nothing of any note, and for 2009, releases are slowing to a painful crawl. A couple of months ago, I decided just to cave in and go for the 360. Best decision I've made in a long time, 360s rule.

You can buy a decent PC for this price

You could buy a fridge for this price...... but you aren't going to be able to play games @ 1920*1200 on a fridge and you're not going to be able to do it on a £374 PC either....

Some good deals on these cards now. There is also a Zotac 295 available from Play for £370.49 which includes GRID and 3DMark Vantage..

i dont think we need this card yet. i recelntly have a 1Gb HD 4870 and im happy with it.

ONLY buy this card if:

1. You only play strategy game and because of some disease would risk death if you don't run the game at full graphical specs.

2. Want to buy a card which is very powerful indeed, however that's the same as getting the roundest best wheels in the world, but no car to put them on. (Sure this card is touted to be able to render shrek in real time, the only thing is there IS no shrek to be rendered real time - nor are there any games).

3. You are out of your mind.

Oh and with this generation of gaming, games come predominantly on the consoles and are ported to the pcs and/or in the rarity they don't, they usually work good enough with MUCH cheaper options.

Just buy a 360 or a ps3. Seriously, a graphics card this powerful requires a rig which is powerful enough to accomodate the card. And that costs more needless spending. Some things are just too stupid to do.

Oh and at £380, there is NO graphics card in the world which closely resembles a "bargain".

Your post is pure opinion.

I'd MUCH rather sit down in front of my PC with a good quality keyboard and mouse and play @ 1920*1200. Sure you'd much rather sit in front of a 360 and a TV and props to you for that if that's what you want to do and you're not everyone. Loads of people still game on PC's because it's the only platform where you can play RTS's and FPS's properly without having to compromise. That said that's only my opinion which a lot of other people share, others like PS3's and 360's more and I've got no problem with that tbh but do understand that you don't represent the opinions of all the gamers out there.

Most people who think the 360 or PS3 are far better than PC's have never used a properly specced PC to game before. I play most of my games through steam. No faff at all. My PC needs a new graphics card but even with 4gb of RAM, an E8400, an X1950XT 512 and a 24" Samsung LCD it still offers an experience for me which is more immersive than on consoles and which also offers better and more versatile control systems.

Personally this graphics card fits into the category of being too expensive for me to ever justify unless I won lotto but I've voted hot as it IS a good price and graphics card deals need all the support they can get.

As for quality of games...... Portal, TF2, Left 4 Dead and Crysis. All games that either graphically eclipse console games OR which just aren't as playable/enjoyable on consoles. PC's have PhysX and 3d in the pipeline which consoles won't see for another couple of years. For 3d you're going to have to buy a whole new TV as well as having the horsepower for the console to render 120fps @ 1920*1080 which I don't see happening anytime too soon.

pc's are not the best for gaming??

a £50 8800gt gpu card will outperform an xbox360 and ps3

If you want the best in internet multiplayer games you really need to have a pc

if you want the best in eyecandy and be able to keep getting the next immediate generation of graphics you have to get a pc. also windows 7 and directx 11 out next year which will also present characters with about 20 times more tesselated polygons giving amazing quality, so stupid to say PCS not the best anymore when there always evolving unlike the stale platforms of consoles

if you like playing 1st person shooters you have to have a mouse and keyboard(aiming on consoles is usually aided on a console which defeats the gaming experience)

I've ordered 3 of these bad boys to play Hawx and Tom Clancys End War on my NEC MultiSync LCD3090WQXi 30" Widescreen Professional LCD Monitor. The 3 will go well with my Multicell Quad Core Xeon desktop with 16GB ram.

Ive got a PS3 and its good dont get me wrong but no wear the control, for example, in 1st person shooters e.g. Crysis, Farcry 2, Fear 2 or Hawx.

:whistling:

If you were using 'serious' 3d graphics applications you'd be wanting a workstation card though (Quadro or FireGL), which will spank this card in viewport speed and stability. (I know they're essentially the same card, but in real-world use when working with large scenes there is a huge difference)

Still, this is a good price for this card - I have a 360 and really enjoy it, but I enjoy PC gaming even more - full 1080p (or higher), stable framerates and the ability to turn V-sync on whereas it seems to be becoming a trend in 360 games to turn vsync off to squeeze out a playable framerate. Plus many other advantages to PC gaming makes this a hot deal!

Also the cost of owning a console is not as low as some people think. The games cost more than PC games and consoles like the PS3 are over £250. Many console owners I know end up purchasing expensive wide screen TVs and surround sound systems too on top of this so they can get a better gaming experience. They are themselves quite shocked at the amount of money they spend on their console gaming habit. To compound this many people end up buying TWO different consoles like an XBox 360 and a Wii.

Also the cost of PC hardware has been plummeting in the last few years and it is quite easy to build a PC for £500 which will play most modern games without any issues.
Most PC games are graphics card limited and hence the base PCs will be fine for many years and does not need to be cutting edge!! An upgrade to a £100 graphics card every 18 months to 24 months will do fine for most PC gamers.

All very true. I've probably spent about £150 over the last 3 or so years on PC games and have had more than enough to keep me occupied. A lot of people I know have to spend 3 or 4 times that much to keep themselves occupied with console games.
#32
This argument has been around forever, PCs are way more powerful full stop. Load up one of your console games (likely it doesnt even run at 720p, it's just upscaled to look like it has) then compare a PC game on your LCD at full 1920x1080p with insane amounts of AA/AF etc, there is no contest.

If you want one of these or a 4870X2 (my gaming machine is 8gb/4870X2/Q6600) then you don't really care about a console which has the same graphical prowess as a few product cycles ago. I had a PS3, Xbox 360 and WIi. The 360 I never played and sold it because the games were usually on the PC anyway and the PC played and looked miles better. The PS3 I only keep because of Singstar, and the Wii is gathering dust somewhere.

TBH, It is the growing console market that has caused PC games market to slowdown..

However a guy that works at my local game says thhat he had a 360 and he got so fed up of it breaking he bought a PC lol...

However saying it isn't the best, no console or anything for that matter is the best... they all have there pros and cons..

Are you deluded? Do you have any idea how long PCs have been around for? That alone gives them the greatest range of games - more choice too, including a mammoth amount of FREE ones. A GPU isn't just there for games - many people don't play a single on (looking at Mac Pro users here..).

Cheapest price for this card..voted hot.

Compare the price.

People who want to spend on mid-high/high end hardware usually are not bothered about the price, we want performance!

In contrast, you can easily build a budget PC with a half decent GPU to run games at a higher res than consoles and you'll probably still save money when you buy games etc. I have a PC downstairs which cost me less than £300 to put together and puts any of the consoles to shame graphically.

what about the use of modes etc to revive older games.

That and the PC versions of COD4/5 have a helluva lot better online system, you can select what map you want instead of voting for one to be skipped.

Also, some genres are much better on the PC due to the Keyboard Mouse combo.

RTS's for example..

Imagine playing Age of Empires on a 360 or PS3 lol....

Don't you also think that the PC is the benchmark? The games consoles seem to be moving towards being a "Mini pc" in terms of the features they are starting to push....
