Would this be overkill for a bedroom? I want a decent sound setup in my bedroom and I keep getting told that I'll need a good amp, but something like this seems a bit OTT for my requirements, or is it worth spending the extra? What's power consumption like on one of these things?

Not at all.
I have the Onkyo TX-SR507 (which is similar to this, minus the 3D), and it's not overkill at all for what I use it for. However, this receiver would be useful should you decide to get 3D TV :)

I'd say that it's overkill for a bedroom unless it's a huge room. 600W RMS is a lot of volume. However if you want good quality then a smaller amp won't provide it.
#5
Not a bad price but this is very much an entry level reciever. Dont **** in your pants cos it says 3D ready tho. At the moment Id prefer to sack the 3D-ness of this reciever off and get one that decodes HD audio codecs, as I dont have £1200 for a 3D TV, and when I do I will spend more than £180 on an AV reciever. Heat added anyways, as it is a good price.

Guys, I am in the market for a new AV + 5.1 speaker set for around £300-ish.... Other suggestions are more than welcomed

I picked up one of these for the bedroom, and it has so far exceeded my expectations both in terms of sound quality and functionality, excellent for an entry level receiver. I purchased from Peter Tyson at the same price a few weeks ago, so not an amazingly hot deal, more market value to be honest.

You do not buy a 100w/channel receiver and run it at full volume. You would run it at 10-20w to minimise any distortion, which in the case of Yamaha is mininal anyway.

Onkyo - why didnt you get the Sony? :whistling:

£180 is the going price for this everywhere so not a bargain in terms of price from Home AV Direct. 5p cheaper at Richersounds.

True, but as I have a Richersounds just down the road it is not an issue for me.
Several other etailers do have free delivery though so Home AV Direct is not a particularly good price. As I said £180 is the going price for this unit.

Avoid this unheard of brand and pay extra to get a Sony.........only kidding, where is Loughboro guy these days!
#16
Good price, but if you're going for a 1.4 HDMI reciever then surely you'd want it to have Dolby TrueHD audio decoding?
#17
I'm going for the Onkyo TXSR578 which is more than twice the price though...

Gotta say, I changed my Harmon Kardon for the Onkyo SR308 which also has the HDMi 1.4 for 3D sound and I can't believe the sound difference. It really is quite incredible. That one is only £219.00 form RS.

I'm looking for speakers & receiver for 300-ish, not the receiver on its own...

Onkyo - why didnt you get the Sony? :whistling:

Because, at the time, there wasn't a Sony alternative that provided the features I wanted, at my price range. Also, what swayed me towards buying the Onkyo is the build quality and robustness of their equipment. The unit certainly feels solid with it's weight and all-metal exterior.

Sorry for the double post, but I got my Onkyo TX-SR507 and Tannoy FX5.1s from HyperFi (they specialise in discounted audio and theater equipment :)).

The pair can be had on the site for £330, if that's any help to you.

3D TV is just complete bull imo and that's its main selling point. I'd look elsewhere personally but the price isn't bad.

I'm looking for something almost identical to yours with a different Onkyo AV receiver? How does the Tannoy FX5.1 sound like? Did they come with cables?

Buy Sony now and then get something else in 3 years when your Sony breaks down.

I've bought too many supposedly 'high end' Sony items that died to ever buy Sony again.

Spec says 5 x 120w o/p but further down it states power consumption to be a mere 250w !?:whistling:

The FX5.1s sound great. I have a medium sized room, in which I watch movies, listen to music and play games using the combo.
Mine didn't come with any speaker cable, but you might want to ask when you order, as they might throw some in free :) I ended up ordering about 50m of speaker cable, with plenty of spare (we're moving home soon).

How about some for mentioning Peggy Bedford then ?

She got banned for talking out of her bung hole and she was the master of modern home cinema advisory

I miss Her skills ....
