Calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers attract an additional premium within the call price which is paid to the benefit of the called party and their telecoms provider. This premium is generally larger on 09 and 118 numbers. It's currently known as the Enhanced Termination Rate. There is no such premium on calls to geographic 01 and 02 numbers, non-geographic 03 numbers, nor on calls to genuine mobile numbers starting 071 to 075 and 077 to 079.

On 084 numbers the premium payment is up to 5p per minute excluding VAT and varies depending on the exact number called. 0845 numbers are special cases and this payment is currently just under 2p per minute. Many users of these numbers, especially those using 0845 numbers, deny this premium exists.

On 087 numbers the premium payment is up to 10p per minute, excluding VAT and varies depending on the exact number called. Revenue sharing was suspended on 0870 numbers in 2009 and the termination rate is currently only 0.5p per minute.

On 1 July 2015, revenue sharing returns to 0870 numbers, call prices for 0845 numbers will be aligned to those for 0843 and 0844 numbers and call prices for 0870 numbers will be aligned to those for 0871 and 0872 numbers. Call prices for all 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers will be split into two parts, each separately declared.

The premium termination payment will be exposed as the Service Charge. It will be up to 7p per minute on 084 numbers and up to 13p per minute on 087 numbers. This charge must be declared everywhere these numbers are advertised.

084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers will be used for chargable services with a declared Service Charge. Organisations that cannot justify imposing a Service Charge on callers must change their number to stop imposing it. Ofcom made matching 034 and 037 numbers available in 2007 for users of 084 and 087 numbers to migrate. The change of number involves changing the 8 to a 3.

Where usage of a number with a Service Charge is clearly inappropriate, callers must complain about the unjustified additional Service Charge that the organisation is imposing on them.

I'm on Talktalk with all inclusive calls that used to include these, however someone said that they are bringing in charges soon. If that's the case then thanks for the heads up, as you say saynoto0870 doesn't always give a valid alternative number.
companies should now be using 03

But they wanna make money lol

And fair enoughs if you're on BT, but quite a lot of people won't be, or at least won't have a landline package from BT :)
If you do not have a BT landline, then you decided to switch.Calls from other networks may be higher and calls from mobiles will cost considerably more
I dispute the fact that quite a lot of those with a BT residential landline do not have a BT calling plan.
(If you are one without, then entirely different charges apply, such as a call set up charge of just 3.3p)

Or never had it in, in the case of some people

The 0808 number is totally free, and the 020 number is generally within people's call package on their mobiles :)

I personally dont know any one who needs a landline tbh! And no one who is on BT (Aside from my grand parents)

Just 5p for calls to landlines and cheaper mobile calls when using 18185

This is great if you have an evening and weekend call package and want to call before 6pm on a weekday. Rates are in pence per minute. Calls are billed per minute rounded to the nearest penny, in…
