couple questions... firstly, I made a few upgrades - 3800 processor and 19" Ultrasharop TFT, which brings the price up to £343.75 - is this still a good deal?

Secondly, are these machines any good for upgrading? ie, is there room for a couple extra hard drives?

cheers
[mod]#17
The case is slimline so very hard to upgrade, buy it as you want it to be is my advice, if your looking for an expandable system this really isnt the one for you.
System is £100 off so its still a good deal, go check the price of the 19" monitor on its own ;-)
#18
What would someone recommend if you wanted to put a dual freeview card on this - I want to use it as a pvr - thanks op

For your information:

The motherboard is SATA only so no PATA connection for IDE HDD (Hard Drive), or DVDROM, so if you want to put in your Pioneer 111D or similar decent DVDRW you won't be able to.

Only has 2x SATA connections onboard so 1xHDD & 1xDVDROM.

Does have 4x Memory Slots so can upgrade the memory quite easily.

Is there any way to change that (other than replacing the mobo) can you buy a cable or card that will give you more SATA connections?

You can buy a PCI -> SATA card so give more connections, probably get a PCI -> IDE (PATA) card also.

THE PCI CARDS ALSO NEED TO BE SMALL DELL FORM FACTOR THOUGH AS STANDARD SIZE CARDS DON'T FIT IN THE CASE! (Bloody Dell's!)
#22
hmm 2nd thoughts
#23
hmm, sounds like I'd be best off leaving this one then as I'd want to stick my existing hard drives, DVDR, sound card, graphics card etc in. Shame really as my current PC seems unwell at the moment :(
#24
Yay got one!
#25
I said sod it and went for it - got one !!! yeahhh - can always go external with freeview stuff
#26
This system would make an alright base for an office donkey or perhaps a budget-oriented Home Theatre PC, but for any other purpose you're really going to need more expansion slots, a proper video card (together with a proper power supply), and a much better processor - preferably not an AMD Athlon! I'd be more inclined to wait for other offers on Intel Core 2 Duo machines :whistling:

Got one!!

Many thanks OP!
#28
Yeah a good system if you want a bargain setup & not bothered about adding more cards but a pain if you want to expand the system capabilities. Anyway who got one??

Same happened last week. People who kept trying eventually got through and got it with £100 discount!
So keep trying. Good luck!!!!
#34
Oh, the temptation. I built it all up, and sat putting the code in until 9:57. It all worked fine, but I bottled it...sigh...

Nice dual-core jobby for around £300 with monitor...woulda been a great buy!

Chances are if people are going to be using it as a HTPC or gaming machine then they already know that. This will suffice for a high % of general pc users for everything they want to do.

These are excellent value deals, and after missing out last weeks one, I built the OH's mum a basic little MATX machine this week. All together it still come to more than £50 more than this from Ebuyer. But would of needed to break warranty stickers etc anyway on the Dell to whack a few extra bits in.

I've built pc's before spending well over a grand, for users that thought they'd make use of a £350 graphics card etc, but ended up the majority of the time surfing the web.
#38
I just phoned dell. they told me this is a refurb machine!! didnt see that anywhere on the details online!! mind you, fella kept trying to sell me a £400 machine that will be a lot better for me apparently... will keep trying though. heres hoping I get one this time.

everyone still getting errors?

Cannot comment specifically on this system, but I was not aware that there were SATA optical drives. I thought most MOBOs nowadays had SATA connections for HDDs and PATA (i.e. IDE) connectors for optical drives. You can connect up to 2 devices per IDE channel - no reason why one shouldn't be a HDD.

However, I'm only an enthusiastic amateur, not an IT professional...:whistling:
