Apart from extra memory why is this better than current scan 460?

The 1GB 760's have a faster memory bus, 256bit, as opposed to a 192bit bus on the 768MB cards - that's why the 1GB cards perform better than the 768MB cards.

Better than a 4890 then ?

I prefer paying £12 extra for the gigabyte superclock with hawk 2

It is an awesome price, I've been watching it for a few weeks now. Would need 3+ and an SLI mobo to beat my current set-up though.

Though for folding/distributed computing, you don't need the 1GB version, it performs the same as the 768MB. However, the 1GB will have a higher resale value imo.

That's the 768MB version for £140. The Palit 768MB is £121-ish

Where can you get that for £140?

I don't game much on PCs but generally what benefits would I get upgrading to this, generally use Photoshop, video editing now and then, movies, YouTube!

I'm going to hold off till March when Deus Ex: Human Revolution & Crysis 2 are released, because i'd want DX11 for them.

I don't think you'd get much benefit unless your current video card is really old. This card is only useful if you play recent 3d games.

Hot price, which puts me in a quandry, go for this, or hold fire until the Gigabyte inevitably drops to the £120 mark.

You could say that at any point of any year and the answer would be "yes".

I used the 1GB palit sonic platinum in a recent gaming build and it's fantastic. A very happy customer and it had HAWX2 free too. Pretty sure I bought it from scan for £160ish

This is a good deal for that graphics card however be warned it is a terrible noise maker!

I actually bought one a few months back and returned it because the fan was screaming whilst playing games and no it wasn't a defective card but poor design! This particular model features an Aluminium heat sink without heat pipes. So it is terrible at distributing heat away from the graphics chip and the fan has to compensate. The 'PLATINUM' version which costs more has a heat pipe and costs around £160, but for that price you may as well plum for a better make and model. I can heartily recommend the Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB which can be preordered from dabs.com for £140 if you're not in a rush. Have two of these running side by side in SLI and they are capable and silent!

Not quite as around the corner as this time. If they are just coming out in the states it really is 'just around the corner.'

Exactly, there are new Radeon cards being released next week which isn’t exactly a typical scenario. People that say there’s always something around the corner are I presume missing the difference between 6 days and 6 months!

Whilst the new cards are in a different price point to this card there may be a knock on effect on pricing on the tier below. That should be clearer next week.

The Palit is a terrible card compared to the Gigabyte because of 3 key reasons.

1) the build quality is terrible and overheats like hell!
2) Gigabyte version is quicker, £12 extra ("quoted by me!), has a slower core so better for overclocking and runs cool
3) This thing is NOISSSSSYYYYYYY!!!

If you've got the latest version of photoshop or premiere pro, then they can offload some of the processing to the graphics card. Potentially makes a lot of difference, but if you're only doing it every now or then, it is unlikely to be worth it.

Amen brother! Couldn't wait to return this Palit card and damned glad I did now I have the Gigabyte as a replacement. Gotta love those Distance Selling Regulations!

Just out of interest did you replace the TIM on your Gigabyte? I did with a little OCZ Freeze and it actually reduced the temperature of the card even further.

It's 3/4 generations of graphics cards better. But as the others are saying, the Gigabyte card for the extra cash is probably the better option.
