I have just recieved my card from scan not only 2 days ago and i had an Nvidia GTX295 before i sold it as i thought i did not need all the graphics power as i wasnt playing many pc games...hahah well i got this and i have to say that this card is trully amazing for the price...(i mean even if this card was £260 it would still be a steel )...i played far cry ,crysis & crysis warhead, fear 2, prototype, and runs on full settings with max AA &AF... it was only srysis and crysis warhead that had trouble with 4x AA and upwards but my screen is a 1920x1080 47in LCD and oh my god ...even with Vsync on its was sooooooo smoooooth...2x of these cards would smash the hell out of any GTX295..and to be honest there really is no need to at the moment...but i will be buying another and crossfire them ...and even with 2 of these puppies is less power consuption than a ATI 4870x2 ...

buy it buy it buy it buy it.......oh ..you cant cus there is no stock left.....oh well you can pre-order .....!!!!

FANTASTIC CARD !!!!

i Have no idea on how to upload a picture of it on here...so can someone tell me in a message or post a pic for me please...be kind as i am still a newbie ...lol..!

Wrong. The deal post here is for the Black Edition meaning 1Ghz GPU clock and 4Ghz RAM. OCuk have their Black Edition at an eye watering £203.99 before delivery. You are referring to the standard XFX edition which is only 850Mhz GPU and 3.9Ghz RAM...

As for me, I bought the Black Edition from Scan a few days ago at £156 delivered :santa:

Really good deal and price, shame its not currently available but worth a wait, so long as you dont mind the fact its a bit noisy and runs hot.

There isnt much info on teh net, but I found this conclusion following a review -

XFX 4890 Black Edition
The XFX 4890 Black Edition offers a huge performance advantage over the reference model due to the 1GHz core speed, the margin is considerable and is illustrated in all of our benchmarks with clear increases in frame rates.

Despite the promising performance the card is unfortunately let down by the cooling solution. In our testing we found that the card is extremely loud, not just under full load but even in titles not traditionally GPU intensive such as Left4Dead and World of Warcraft. Due to the special nature of the card we feel that it really deserves a better cooling solution, much like that found on the Sapphire 4890 Atomic.

Anyone purchasing a 4890 with a 1GHz core clearly wants the best but in its current state this card falls short of the mark. As I mentioned earlier at times we even found it difficult to game on the card without headphones due to the uncomfortable noise level and we’re sure that any consumers looking to purchase one of these cards would have been more than happy to pay a premium for a quiet card.

However even with the less than stellar cooling solution you can’t ignore the value and performance the card offers in other areas. In our tests it was as fast as the GTX275 and even the GTX285 in one or two cases, with that fact in mind the price tag of £203.99 becomes very attractive. In fact, some slower 4890s are retailing for a higher price tag at the current time. Additionally, the bundle is supplied with the full version of Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. and the product is complete with XFX 5 star customer support, both adding value to the overall package.

The XFX 4890 Black Edition is a fantastic performer for the price but is let down by the cooler. It could however provide the ideal platform for a watercooled system due to the price and performance of the core.

Yeh, didn't notice the black edition sorry :p

It's basically the same card just pre-overclocked with a "better" cooler though isn't it?
#13
P.s is this definitely coming in today? I need it delivered tomorrow at the latest. I would plunk an extra 20 over the standard for this.

its not actualy to bad you know the cooler....my BFG GTX295 was about the same on idle but on strain i would say the GTX295 cooler was louder ..i do think the black edtion could do with a better cooler as it does get hotter than my 295 did ..my gtx 295 got to about 77c on 40% fan where my ati 4890 get to about 88c on same fan speed.........these are all full load temps...

Heh if you notice my post further up, it has stock cooling, runs hot hot hot because of it and gets noisey as a result of the cooler working overtime.

Im sure they will bring out a subsequent release with upgraded cooling soon, unusual to see a black edition without at least some extra passive cooling pipes . My 4870 certainly has them.

Damn, I was going to order this. If its louder than the GTX 295 then im not ordering as that was far to loud for me >_>

back to the stock 4890 I go.

I get what you are saying, but you are comparing it to another noisy hot card, the only difference is the 295 can justify the heat it generates as its ripping around 420W from you PSU when its in full swing, whereas the 4890 power consumption is nowhere near this, yet its getting hotter and more noisy. Its around the 50dBA mark, which is about the same as a noisy office on the dBA scale of things apparently. They should bundle it with some headphones and a desk fan rather than Hawx lol :)
Its still a hot deal (if you pardon the pun) and a good card if you are looking for out and out speed. It may save on heating bills during the winter months too. However in performance terms, it needs upgraded cooling.

If it's the same physical hardware, why not just buy the standard edition and overclock it using ATI Overdrive?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I imagine your warranty is invalid if you overclock it with catalyst control centre, but anything else?

why are peeps voting cold ...they havent got a clue what they are on about,,,i have this card and it keeps up with a GTX295....

i will repeat again this card is not noisy so why say it is when you havent got it.....its not noisy on idle what so ever for £160 its just amazing....

and i would like to see you get the standard model and over clcok it to these speeds....hahahahahah my m8 tried it with his standard XFX 4890 and kept getting BSOD... some people just dont know anything about graphics cards...
