Didn't know that was possible 8)
Just checked my hardware, it supports: Intel Matrix RAID 0, 1, 10, 5 and JBOD.

Relatively simple process?

Just remember RAID isn't a backup solution. It's hardware redundancy ;-) you still need to backup.

hot price on the disks though.
#6
and just remember that generating that checksum bit for RAID5 does have a CPU overhead too
#7
Bought 4 of these too in a RAID 5 config using an Adaptec 5805 controller. This has an Intel IOP processor onboard to do the XOR parity bit calculation therefore does not slow down the main CPU.
I'm now approaching 400MB/s performance with these drives. They are fantastic however seek latency seems to be even worse when used in a RAID config.
So perhaps it's better to hybrid with a low latency SSD also.

Yes and no... If you have installed windows 7 without RAID, it will BSOD as soon as you enable it. (Nasty!)
What you need to is enable RAID support with a registary tweak, before enabling the matrix RAID controller. How to discussion here
Once you have got that working, you need to install the intel matrix software. The rest is easy. Changing from a single disk to mirror / raid is all done through the GUI.

Getting this for less than £40 is the cheapest its been, but all HD's are dropping everyday

2 x 1TB = best way to go for people wanted a 2TB HD because the 2TB Samsung HD's are not as fast as this model. thats if its not the eco version!

Really depends on what you want it for. If it was just for a big 2TB archive, I would probably go for the samsung f4 eco.

These are great for OS/GAmes/Apps as they are really fast & quiet.

use link provided by OP for this price, otherwise the website shows it at £42.22 + P&P

Hi, a bit of a novice with these SATA hard drives so some help required here.

My new Samsung PS42C450 tv has a media player built in so I have found out it will play movies off a USB Stick via the tv USB connection. If I purchased this 1TB (1000 GB) Samsung Spinpoint F3 Hard Drive £39.94 at Scan and backed up all my DVD movies onto it and then purchased a Newlink USB 2.0 Dual Docking Station for Sata Hard http://www.amazon.co.uk/Newlink-Dual-Docking-Station-Drives/dp/B003PU2QBI/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3Q1D9N4KOIJGB&colid=30X3ZK1M8BWK9Drives
And plugged the drop in caddy into the tv with the USB connection do you think this Samsung hard drive would be quieter enough to play movies on, I have heard that the Samsung 'eco version' spins at a lower rate and is less noisy! Any ideas please?

If you are worried about noise levels, you would be better getting a 5400RPM drive, especially if you have it sitting in a caddy without any casing.
You can get a 1.5TB 5400RPM drive here for £52.57 :)Link
Again, you can use the avforums offer to get free shipping.

If you want to bone up on silent components, this site is really good : http://www.silentpcreview.com/

Raid cards are better when migrating to a new mainboard.

Raid isn't compatible as I found out - Nvidia Raid to Intel Raid.
#25
Would this be noticeably faster than my existing 1Tb WD Black ?
Cheers!
#26
great deal, but pity supersavers are limited to one per customer

Thanks for that, much appreciated. For an extra £12 or so that buys me an extra 500GB storage space (or roughly an extra 100 dvd's of movies! )
I've had account with AV forums for a few years so I will order the 1.5TB Samsung eco - friendly drive via AV Forums/Scan link plus look at Scan's SATA caddies and see if they offer an open drop in caddy that is suitable for a 1.5TB SATA hard drive as the Amazon 'Newlink USB 2.0 Dual Docking Station for Sata Hard Drives' is only recommended for hard drives upto 1TB in size.

I can reccomend the 'Sharkoon' Caddies. Build quality is very good. You can get ones with CF card readers, eSata and even dual bays. :)

Be careful as you may receive a drive from Scan which is not covered by Samsung's three year warranty.

I purchased two within the last month (1x Today only and 1x normal price) and both came up as "Code 103 - Out of Service area - The product has been brought in from outside of this service region and cannot be serviced. Please contact your reseller or distributor" on Samsung's warranty checker.

Therefore if you have a problem with your drive you will have to rely on Scan's goodwill or continued existence as a company.

You will not be able to send the drive to the company that they list the telephone number for on their product page (Rexo). You have been warned!

That would work. Futureproof too (USB3). An expensive option, but nice.
