Nearly voted cold but then noticed it is a 2.5"

Might want to make that a little clearer in thread title

Thank's for that

Also worth pre-empting the "will this work in a ps3?" question and stick that in the title too. People love a good PS3 HDD and this looks like the best deal on one of those so far. Here, have some heat and some rep.

Done, thank you for advice.

Pretty good price.

imranmaz: I prefer Samsung Spinpoints, they are absolutely silent. I'd pay the extra 57p :-) However, good find on the Westerm Digital one.

Also, bear in mind that if the advice is followed, you'll get free next-day delivery from Scan. Whereas the 'free' delivery from ebuyer will be "up to" 5 working days.

Are you being serious??

50p cheaper elsewhere with slow delivery makes this a cold deal?

I was looking at getting this drive for the PS3 but after reading around, there are issues with performance. They have been sorted by Samsung now but you do have to patch the drive etc.

I realise the review is slightly old but they have now released the HM251JI.

Good for the PC but a pointless size for the PS3, just how many photos and mp3s can you want to see and hear which is about all adding a hard drive of this size would really be useful for on the PS3?...

I'd much prefer a Samsung Spinpoint.

Very useful for PS3 - lots of games now install to the HDD to make loading time quicker. GT5 Prologue uses 6Gb of space. warhawk uses a couple of gig. A few games, and Play TV when it comes out means that 40Gb will be a bit tight,,,,

You'd be suprised how quickly as PS3 can eat up hard drive space.

i may be an exception, but I've got 50GB of music, 10GB of photos, a 10GB linux partition and lots of Playstation Network games and demos installed on my 160GB drive.

There seems to be a trend for recent PS3 games needing to be installed on the hard drive too, such as GT5 Prologue and Everybody's Golf etc.

As such, Ive only got 35GB of my 160GB hard drive left !

Would this slot straight into a Laptop (Lenovo 3000 n200) as a direct replacement for the 120GB Serial ATA 150 that's in there ?

I'd also seen this fujitsu

My PS3 is full of HD-DVD backups (ripped to MP4). With each film taking 4GB of space it does not take long to fill 250GB. I finally retired my old XBOX Media Centre.

For that kind of stuff you might as well have gone for an external drive, and save the internal one for game installs.

An almost irresistible price... I currently have a 120GB version in my silent desktop system but I'm running out of space.

I could put the 120GB in an external enclosure, too :)

Very nice, thanks for that. Now I just need to wait for playTV, get an AV receiver with HDMI decoding, an all in one remote and the ir2bt box to control the PS3....

Voted HOT!... another good buy, pity I can't use sata at the moment on my laptop :(
good buy tho'!

Is it on preorder or am I looking at a different product?

"The HM250JI, samsung new 250 GB laptop hard drive seems to have horrible performance on some very common laptop hardware, like the Core duo and Santa rosa platform."

This site is not bad if you wanna know which one is compatible with your laptop: http://www.drivemylaptop.co.uk

Note, Scan are carrying a fair few 250gb drives around the same price and the others do look to be in stock. For the sake of a £1 or so it might be worth taking a look.

Which really frustrates me ... Sony create the PS3 to be the "Centre piece of your degital media living room" and then handicap it with such a small drive.

Sony = Numpties

You can only connect FAT32 drives to your PS3 which is limited to 4GB filesize. Anything bigger and you either have to network share or copy direct to the PS3's HDD.

Sony are in for profit not to give things away. At least Sony have made it easy to replace the drive.

The 250GB Western Digital one was only £50 about 3 weeks ago, so if you're not absolutely desperate for a larger hard drive straight away, it might be worth waiting as ebuyers prices fluctuate alot.

Voted hot for the Samsung anyway as its a good price if you need the hard drive right away.

in my desktop i have 2xWD 160gb raid edition drives
and 2x500gb samsung spinpoints.

within 7months one of my spinpoints have messed up. luckily i had them in raid but still well annoying!

plus WD are more than quiet enough when inside the ps3... people just have preferences and that's fine but one is not better than the other in this case.

Care to elaborate? Scan are one of the best I've used!

I got one of the cheap 320gb 2.5" WD drives from scan a couple of weeks ago after a deal on here and it arrived just fine. Why make statements about a company without giving a reason why? Voted hot.

average blu-ray / hd video file is between 7-10gig, transformers is 18gig so 250 gig doesnt go very far!

Surely anyone that uses a laptop drive for said purposes will already know this and the rest of us probably just don’t care frankly. Or are you being ironic?
