Not sure how i feel about these enclosures, i have a couple of older USB 2.0 ones and when in use the metal casing got quite hot and i ended up barely using them.

Seems cheap if needing to backup now and again though but not having the drive constantly powered on? I was unfortunate enough to get infected with the CryptoLocker ransomware recently and a ton of my files got locked, even on my connected backup drive.. guess that teaches me to keep offline backups from now on.

This is cheap and USB 3, maybe I'll order one to keep an offline backup. Again though i think heat becomes the enemy of these small enclosures without fans, if left powered on a while anyway.

Just spent £50 at Amazon before seeing this, won't let me order it without spending £20.

You can amend you order and add this item in (if its not dispatched).

Can I ask how? I have a lightning deal of £20+ awaiting despatch that I do not want to cancel but see no obvious way of adding this item.

Just checked my order (awaiting dispatch) and there is no option. It may be that it is only just after ordering or it may have been there years ago and I never noticed they removed the option.

I spent some time about a couple months ago as I was getting an enclosure case for one of my HDD. I was looking for something premium and reliable but I found on Amazon and other places that it was all these brands I've never heard of, mostly seemed all cheap Chinese makes. Even the reviews were varied.

Best just to buy the cheapest one you can get. I've bought one one ebay for under £2.99 for a usb 3.0. Works fine.

yep as long as it isn't too old & is the same connection.

Got one... It works fine and great having USB 3.0 but it's such a rubbish design with tiny screws and fiddly parts.
Not really useful if you're planning to pop ssd's in and out.

Cheap price for a hd enclosure case.

ops offer is a good one - might be useful if for some to consider that if you have a few external hard drives lying around already you might find you can open up the case and slot in a different drive. i have two toshiba 1tb ext drives and, once i removed the actual drive for my ps3, the case has been used to initialise/ format 4 hard drives/ssd and also used to try andsave data from 2 failed drives. none of these other drives were 1tb so the case isnt hardwired to a certain size.

you can usually check youtube for opening instructions for your particular drive.

Should be good for extra Xbox one storage if you have an old laptop hard drive over 250gb hanging around (or pick one up cheap from CEX).

Cheaper on ebay for the same item, but if you have prime and want it soon, then a good deal.

if you were looking for occasional use for connecting 2.5" sata drives you have lying around, you could also consider one of these cables or similar from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-3-0-To-SATA-22-Pin-2-5-Hard-Disk-Driver-SSD-Adapter-Converter-Cable-10cm-/131720388522?hash=item1eab259faa:g:f3MAAOSwX~dWtFhZ

Can anyone recommend a similar but better quality product, please. Without fiddly little screws preferably so it's not such a pain when swapping drives in and out. And must be USB 3.0 and support SATA III

Thanks.

Just be aware the drive does no switch off completely, I have one to use with my xbox one s and even though the console is turned off the drive will continue to spin. The led on the drive goes out but you can hear the drive spinning which may eventually damage the drive. There is an off switch on the drive but its not ideal.(changing xbox settings makes no difference)

I quite liked the Inateck tool-free enclosure for £10.99: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KW4T69A/

Unlock and it flips open like a cigarette carton, the drive slides in or out. USB 3.0 with bonus UASP support - seems fast with transfer rates of 120mb/sec on a 2.5" 5400rpm drive. Haven't tried with an SSD, so YMMV, but for me was worth the £10.99.

Does XB1 have USB power settings? I know that the PS4 has the option to have USB ports remain powered when system is off, USB power off after 30 mins and just off along with the system.

So can this be used for Xbox one storage?

It does of sorts, you can have the xbox essentially on standby but chose to turn off external drives or just have the system undergo full shut down when you turn it off, Either way the drive is still powered enough to spin the drive even though the led turns off - When using my desktop pc, the drive does shut down completely but it may be hit or miss depending on your set up. In my experience its not a bad product but not really appropriate for use with xbox one.

Some USB 3.0 ports continue supplying power to attached devices even when switched off, provided they are still connected to mains power. My front USB 3.0 ports on a desktop PC do and the motherboard manufacturer marketed this as a feature, allowing portable devices such as mobile phones to still be charged even after the PC has been shutdown.

USB 2.0 ports as far as I know, do not work in this way.

I had the exact same problem with this enclosure on my Xbox One S where the light would go off but the drive kept spinning. Swapped it with a spare Seagate and this is fine, so it's definitely the enclosure and not the Xbox

I personally have a couple of these. One from April last year is still going strong as an xbox one external, one I got in November last year recently packed up. Powers the drive but can't read data. Cant remember exact numbers but both matched data transfer speeds listed on the page :p

To be honest I feel with these cheaper cages you just have to see whats decently reviewed and hope for the best.

Edit: Also for anyone interested it does seem like the drive goes off on an xbox when you turn storage off. Standby light comes on on the enclosure and I can't hear or feel any kind of noise or vibration coming from the drive.
