Received mine on Saturday, very impressed with the range already, over 1.5 miles with lots of buildings in the way and the other person was in a building also.

Looking for a set of walkie talkies for my 3 year old. The kids ones are rubbish. Any ideas for a cheap set that works better than the kids ones. a simple to operate one would be best, due to my sons age.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Although it says PayPal accepted in the advert you can't check out with PayPal. Looks a little bit dodgy maybe!

Feedback is very suspicious, lots of just "thank you or great product", plus all there previous sales were very low $0.06. The deal I have posted is a UK supplier with a UK business address, I doubt the price will be beaten even from a guaranteed ebay China supplier.

It scrambles transmissions to prevent uninvited eavesdropping. When I looked a couple years back apparently the way to tell was the ones that had it had small stickers under the batteries. A blue or a green dot, can't remember.

you also need to buy the programming cable http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00UR2067I. and ask seller for free software. You can program all channels to legal PMR446, UK civil frequencies. Using the channels 1 to 8 is illegal without a license. (£75/5yr) You also need to permanently fix the aerial. I have the baofeng 4 pack for £40 and this https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/419L93b9suL.jpgcable I can confirm this cable is compatible with the baofeng and it is easy to change the frequencies to the legal ones. I did consider not changing them and just telling the kids not to use the illegal channels, Guess what they were listening to as soon as they got in the garden? the air ambulance channel !

Just something else to be wary of. The cable leading from the UK plug to the charger is not up to spec for UK 240v standards so don't give it too much abuse. I board mounted my 4 chargers and rewired them with complaint cable.

In the age of mobile phones, etc. who needs these and why?
Guess they are becoming an outdated technology but do still have many uses, security guards, prison offices etc that need instant communication and can not wait to dial numbers, also there are aras that are still not covered by all mobile networks, then there is also not relying on being in a phone contract or topping or mobile phones.....

Happy with having to program them but does anyone know where I can buy some or similar with safe chargers that I don't need to rewire or have catch fire?

You could buy one of these usb chargers as the lower voltage going through the cable would be safer. You could then just keep the mains chargers for backup or just bin them http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=usb+radio+charger+888s+retevis+h777&_sacat=0

I have just ordered one of these single pack radios, http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/baofeng-bf-888s-two-way-radio-genuine-zastone-usb-programming-cable-12-74-sold-meisort-2625479 I am going to wait and see if it happens to come with a usb charger first before buying the above, some are supplied with usb chargers.

I myself am happy to use the chargers for now till I get round to rewiring them, another option could be to get some thin aquarium air line hose or similar, remove the plug and thread the cable through the hose and refit the plug, this would then make sure you were never exposed the the core wires.

I can confirm though that the radios in this deal did come with mains chargers

Not that Ofcom will not take much notice unless you take the p**s, but unless you are careful to use them on the right frequencies and power settings, these are illegal, and it's up to you to know the law if you use transmitting equipment.

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/spectrum/radio-spectrum-and-the-law

this page might also be useful to know what freq's to program into your radios:

These can be reprogrammed to legal to use bands, but out the box unless you have a license these are 100% illegal for you to use. Don't go buying these if you want a toy for your kids. If you do have a license they are great, I use them with cadets and for charity events, cheap and cheerful and they get the job done.

totally agree

So, are these the sort of thing which can interfere with emergency services radios? Is it appropriate to post illegal to use products on HUKD (where people only want to know how cheap they are and don't care about the legal/safety issues)?

You can guarantee 80% of these radios are being used on the frequencies they come set to, many businesses included are using them as they come without licences, most emergency services now have gone digital using mobile phone networks. It's more maritime and coast guards etc that are still using 2 way radios and these radios are well away from them frequencies, the only people you may happen to annoy is the local night club bouncers who are using them for there security or the local factory that are using them to communicate with there forklift truck drivers etc. Most of these local businesses can not report you to ofcom for interference to them as they are also unlicensed anyway. You have probably got more chance of winning the lottery than you have of ofcom prosecuting you for being on these frequencies, here are the frequencies you they come pre set to.
