why is my reputation a red square?

Ive added to your rep m8 (good) as you get some idiots who just post bad rep, just because they are idiots.

Thanks for the heads up :)

You should always fit a 10 year lithium smoke detector battery in any smoke alarm - they are available at John Lewis for a tenner and you don't have to remember to change the battery ever! Lasts 10 years which is the life of the alarm and they are standard 9v size so fit any standard smoke alarm. Made by Ultralife I think.

If you live in Lancashire, call the local fire station and they will deliver and fit smoke alarms in your home for free as a pro-active measure.

Sometimes they even arrive in a fire engine to do it, which seems overkill to me!

So they link up wirelessly so both go off when one detects smoke? Sounds cool to me. Good rep added.

South Wales residents only!

neilc has already mentioned in this thread that a similar service applies in Lancashire, but it certainly is not available to everyone nationwide
#18
Hi Premier, it may not be nationwide, but if you google your county's/area's Fire Brigade lots offer this free service.

Best wishes

I have. My local fire service does not offer such a service (although I don't need it as I have mains powered smoke alarms already fitted to my house), except to the elderly, but as I pointed out to Ruzzy in his own thread, the fire brigade where my elderly mother lives doesn't even do that; only to "high risk" cases and my elderly mother living alone in a property without any smoke alarms is not considered by them to be high risk!

I beg to differ and will be making the 300 mile round trip this weekend to ensure a couple are fitted in her new home.

What brigade covers your mother? because a single elderly occupant is deemed and extremely high risk by us. The home safety check is available to the whole country but some brigades do require you meet certain criteria before they will give you free smoke alarms.

If i was you id call the her local brigade explain you live far away and that shes on her own with no alarms and ask can they help. I cant see them saying no to that, who could?

As pointed out in your thread here

Tyne & Wear.

I contacted them before posting and, no, they will not fit them for free. My mother does not live in a 'high risk' area according to their risk analysis. They offered to fit them for a charge, but to be fair they did also suggest I try some local electricians/handymen who would probably do the job a lot cheaper.

Either way, it was going to cost a lot of money, so I offered to do the job myself (and hopefully get a free sunday lunch into the bargain! :) )

Sorry premier im half asleep today, i did look at tyne & wears web site yesterday. Its a shame that they dont offer this service to as many people as other UK brigades. Enjoy your free lunch though.

Thank you to the people who got rid of my red square, how can you look at your reputation to se who has + or - it ?

All counties across the uk offer free home fire safety checks - with an alarm fitted for free if you haven't one already. Just phone your local fire station or check your local fire website (e.g. www.lancsfirerescue.org.uk)

also, they turn up in a fire engine sometimes because if you send someone in a van then there's not enough people to crew the engine & then its off the run!

So if your buying alarms then you've spent money you needn't & you'll probably put it up in the wrong place! Much safer & cheaper to get your local fire peeps to fit them, you've already paid for it through local taxes.
