I can't stand cheapskates, readers. I took my wife out for a Valentine's meal to our favourite restaurant. Once again .. I said to her "Choose anything you want .. off the Menu ..ANYTHING ...you like ...just so long as its not the McChicken Royale Deluxe!":w00t:

OK for all the ignorant snobs out there....a bit of balance.

We called in to our local Wetherspoons a few weeks ago to try the Tuesday night steak deal and I have to say we were pretty impressed. For £15, a very nice bottle of 14% Merlot and two decently cooked and nicely sized 10oz steaks. Another very respectable couple near to us saw what we were having and ordered the same. Oh yes, I do know decent food and I do hate bad customer service, overpriced bad value meals etc.

By the way we had a beautiful steak at a very popular Yorkshire pub, 18oz for £22.50 each (Rhythre Arms), so we don't do cheap and cheerful always, but the Wetherspoon's Tuesday steak deal is very decent value and a decent enough steak.

Might even do it again in the future.

Yes I know Wetherspoons vary, but if you happen to have a decent one near you, I'd recommend it. For everyone else who never go to any sort of pub chain for meals then this is obviously not for you.

Finally. I used to do mystery shopping for quite a few pub chains, not Wetherspoons I hasten to add, and you would be horrified to know that their questionaires asked nothing about the quality of the food, how tasty it was, whether you enjoyed the food etc. The main thing they wanted to know was how quickly it took to serve to your table and clear away. Just think, the pub grub you eat might just be in one of those popular chains.

Next time you go, ask them if the steak is british beef. You'll be surprised by the answer.

Anyone for Zebu :-D

Some people really need to get their heads out of their behinds.
So what W'Spoons isn't the best place to eat in the world. Neither are half of the chain restaurants and fast food places that thousands of people spend money at every day.
The fact is, it is a good deal. If i'm out during lunch and have a choice i'd rather go there than KFC or McDonalds.
It's a Valentines weekend deal, no need to take someone there just for the soul reason of wanting to be romantic.

Exactly how much british beef is sold in the supermarkets ?

If you had half a brain you may be dangerous....

Thanks for YOUR opinions anyway.!!

"With regard to your article 'The great zebu con' (22 August), which questions the quality of Brazilian beef sold in the UK, the attempt to stigmatise the zebu is mystifying.

All round the world the zebu is seen for what it is, just one among many breeds of cattle. Brazilian cattle, a significant proportion of which are zebu crossbreeds, are reared much less intensively than their counterparts in many other countries, in conditions similar to what would be described in Britain as organic or free range.

All beef imported from Brazil conforms to strict standards closely monitored by the European Commission. Your article refers to a ‘faint whiff of xenophobia’ in the bizarre media controversy surrounding the zebu, and Brazilians might also detect the additional whiff of a hidden protectionist agricultural agenda.

Brazilian beef is high-quality, safe, environmentally friendly and competitively priced, which is why Brazil has risen to become the biggest beef exporter in the world, selling to 150 countries."
