1st year uncharged for a .uk domain
2nd year charged at £3.51 inc VAT
minimum registration period of 2 years is set by governing body, not the vendor.
Prices also applicable to incoming .uk domain transfers.

£2 Quidco cashback per domain available, so effectively you can have 2 years .uk registration for £1.51 inc VAT. Increased Quidco cashback available for those wishing to add additional services. See http://www.quidco.com/1and1/

All 1and1 domain registrations also come with uncharged optional 3-page website and very configureable email forwarding.
Additional-cost upgrades available on both.
Detail for uncharged website at http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/FeatureWebsiteSwb

Shrewd marketing by 1and1 compared to its previous pricing model but still offers reasonable discount, albeit on very small sums. Effectively, whilst being low cost 1and1 offers excellent value for those looking to dip toe in the water of an on-line presence for the first time, as well as those looking for future upgrade options.

I noticed this has been heading into the cold region i know nothing about websites but i want to try and have a go at it, can anyone direct me to a good deal that is better?

ideally i probably need web building stuff too although i have MS Frontpage any help would be great thanks guys,

ps would i be better posting this in the forum????
I just registered one at this price. Fantastic, can't find a fault with it. Perhaps those that are voting it cold can explain why ? I voted HOT anyway ;)
i voted it hot too even though i not got a clue :) think ill get it what the heck you got any tips on building a site is front page good enough?
1and1 have a poor reputation if you google for reviews and with any 'cheap' domain registers there can be hidden problems (e.g. transfering out), tech support can be poor (there's is based in the Philippines where they apparently are polite but not well informed) and slow to process updates.
Cheapest isn't always best with domain registration. I personally use enom.com and have found them to be very good.
Given this some heat as it doesn't deserve to be so cold.

there can be hidden problems (e.g. transfering out)

They used to be appalling for cancelling domains as they insisted you had to either do it in writing or via fax (caused a nightmare for me when I was living abroad as I had no fax machine).

But now they allow you to cancel them online so it's simple.

I admit their CS is not the best though as you often wait several days for an answer for an online ticket or you can phone their 10p a minute 0870 number if you can't wait that long (probably why they choose to ignore your online tickets so long in hope you phone instead!)
1and1's hosting is pants, Customer service is naff, But for £1.51 for domains its ok and there isn't much room for complaints!!!!!

I just had a good scout around their site to see if I could see any information regarding transferring any domains registered through 1&1 to another provider of your choice. I can only see transferring in and not out.

So its highly probable you will be hit with a transfer fee. Its bad business not to show this info and can only lead to suspicion.

go to domain control panel, unlock the domain, set the new tag etc, implement new registrar's import procedure.
tranferred out a buddy's domain from 1and1 a few years back without charge or issue.

never had a problem with them myself. I know some businesses that use 1and1 without issue. If perception of (any) hosting issues is a problem, use 1and1 DNS config to point the domain elsewhere - settings update in minutes, as do email config changes, and have done so for me evey time I've played with settings.

Additional benefit: cloaked domain registration details
i.e. whois checks do not reveal the registrant's identity - the ultimate way of preventing being hit with spam email and phonecalls.
The charge for this cloaked service? Zero.
Suspect not many other registrars offer this, well not at £3.51 for 2years registration :w00t:
Dont bother with the 3 page website rubbish, just get the domain and make it point to one of the great free website making tools out there. Wordpress.com for example (not to be mistaken with wordpress.org the software that drives the .com site) have some really great blog based free websites which are super simple to set up and pretty much limitless in what you can do with them, and you don't even need to use them as a blog if you don't want, you can just set up "normal webpages" and pretty much ignore the entire blogging side of it if you like.

I cant recommend wordpress.com enough.
http://www.saynoto0870.co.uk has it as an 01 number :)

Is that info still upto date though? - I was under the impression 1&1 had moved to Germany, 01753 490401 is a Reading number where they used to be based.
We've been using them for a while now.

Once reg'd we then transfer the domains over Fasthosts with whom we have a reseller package for the hosting.
Not heard of "cloaked domains"? Or are you refering to opting out of WHOIS - which I thought was pretty standard - at least for non commercial use?

"cloaked domain registration" is my terminolgy as that term seems more apt than 1and1's description of "private registration". you're quite correct in saying you can normally omit address / email detail of registrant, but the cloaked domain ownership option also hides the registrant name = all registrant contact details are cloaked. 1and1 have been providing this option to their U.S. clients for ages - it's a recent introduction for U.K. clients.

Incidently, the offer may currently stand at £3.51 for 2 years (which it states is limited time only!), and I wont argue is good value. What about after that on renewal? £7.02 i suppose? Doesnt sound so clever then if it is?

Impossible to predict what any registrar will charge for renewal in 2 years time. All my business 1and1 renewals have always been at the prevailing rate for a new reg. Note my OP comment about shrewd marketing:
1and1 usually charge £1.99 + VAT per year for a .uk domain. Now they have introduced this "free" 1st year offer but upped the 2nd year to £2.99 + VAT. I suspect it will drop back to £1.99 + VAT per year when this promotion ends.
Maybe best to consider this for what it is:
a mere £3.51 for 2 years .uk domain registration, optionally cloaked and with 3page website + email tools + upgrade options. In that context - it's an absolute steal.
I use 1and1 and I have found that they are the best of all the hosts I have used. They are the most reliable and have the best features, though you do pay a little more for them.
opting out of WHOIS for free makes this a great deal IMO. Cheapos I've had in the past always charged for this. Thank you, voted hot.
is wordpress.com completely free? i see you have to signup before using it

im looking for a simple software solution to create a few sites bit not them blogs
