ideally i probably need web building stuff too although i have MS Frontpage any help would be great thanks guys,

Cheapest isn't always best with domain registration. I personally use enom.com and have found them to be very good.

They used to be appalling for cancelling domains as they insisted you had to either do it in writing or via fax (caused a nightmare for me when I was living abroad as I had no fax machine).
But now they allow you to cancel them online so it's simple.
I admit their CS is not the best though as you often wait several days for an answer for an online ticket or you can phone their 10p a minute 0870 number if you can't wait that long (probably why they choose to ignore your online tickets so long in hope you phone instead!)

So its highly probable you will be hit with a transfer fee. Its bad business not to show this info and can only lead to suspicion.
go to domain control panel, unlock the domain, set the new tag etc, implement new registrar's import procedure.
tranferred out a buddy's domain from 1and1 a few years back without charge or issue.
never had a problem with them myself. I know some businesses that use 1and1 without issue. If perception of (any) hosting issues is a problem, use 1and1 DNS config to point the domain elsewhere - settings update in minutes, as do email config changes, and have done so for me evey time I've played with settings.
Additional benefit: cloaked domain registration details
i.e. whois checks do not reveal the registrant's identity - the ultimate way of preventing being hit with spam email and phonecalls.
The charge for this cloaked service? Zero.

Is that info still upto date though? - I was under the impression 1&1 had moved to Germany, 01753 490401 is a Reading number where they used to be based.
Once reg'd we then transfer the domains over Fasthosts with whom we have a reseller package for the hosting.
"cloaked domain registration" is my terminolgy as that term seems more apt than 1and1's description of "private registration". you're quite correct in saying you can normally omit address / email detail of registrant, but the cloaked domain ownership option also hides the registrant name = all registrant contact details are cloaked. 1and1 have been providing this option to their U.S. clients for ages - it's a recent introduction for U.K. clients.
Impossible to predict what any registrar will charge for renewal in 2 years time. All my business 1and1 renewals have always been at the prevailing rate for a new reg. Note my OP comment about shrewd marketing:
1and1 usually charge £1.99 + VAT per year for a .uk domain. Now they have introduced this "free" 1st year offer but upped the 2nd year to £2.99 + VAT. I suspect it will drop back to £1.99 + VAT per year when this promotion ends.
Maybe best to consider this for what it is:
a mere £3.51 for 2 years .uk domain registration, optionally cloaked and with 3page website + email tools + upgrade options. In that context - it's an absolute steal. :thumbsup:
