20+ Camcorders for under £200 delivered

edi Avatar
1d, 4m agoFound 1 decade, 4 months ago
Here is a list of 20+ camcorder offers for under £200 delivered. Retailers include Jessops, Comet, Play, Dixons, Currys, Empiredirect, Ebuyer and Pixmania.

The prices dont include cashback but include delivery. I had surprises and disappointments when searching for prices. To my surprise, JESSOPS tops the list with the cheapest, yet powerful Panasonic NV-GS27 camcorder. Disappointment ? Not even a single camcorder is sub £200 at Amazon.co.uk

Edit: Jessops is no longer the cheapest :(

As expected, all these camcorders are miniDV formats. Minimum information is provided for each camcorder including optical zoom, digital zoom and any other significant specification. No list is complete without your help; please help me to update this thread (Reputation is guaranteed for all useful pointers :) ) and I hope this remains as a source for anyone looking for a cheap camcorder.

Quidco cashback: Jessops (4%), Comet (3.5%), Play (2%), Dixons (3%), Currys (2%), Empiredirect (2%), Ebuyer (1.5%) and Pixmania (3%).

Amazing list, thanks for putting all the effort and time in - I've been considering a cheap DV camcorder now I've switched to SLR with no video recording and the members of this list seem ideal. However, the D-SLR (bought from an offer posted here) is trying to drain my money for accessories right now...sheesh I hate this site!

Thanks Cat, win2000b, paden69, Johnmcl7 and Lee.

Paden69, I was strict with my £200 mark and hence might have missed the £203 camcorder from Amazon. As you rightly pointed out there is no SONY in the above list & hence might be worth adding it. Do you mind PM me the Amazon link please ?
#11
Great list Edi & very much appreciated. Just a strange thing I noticed- if you buy from Jessops and add any accessories at a discounted price (the Panasonic pack of tapes, for example, at £11.99 instead of £17.99) and then use the hotukdeals or quidcoten codes the discounted accessories go back up to the original price, wiping out any cashback gained via quidco. I don't know why this is, but bear this in mind when comparing prices. The list is perfect for the camcorder alone, but if you need any tapes or other accessories you might want to compare the package price.
#12
No need for a camcorder, but I am sure this will be useful for people looking to buy one. Thanks for your effort!
#13
They must be clearing the decks for the release of HDD (Hard Disk Drive) cameras or maybe HD (High Definition) ones?
#14
Any Camcorder experts recommend the best of that bunch? Looking to buy one for my holiday in Dominican Republic!!
(Jealous??)

Tommy,

Panasonic NV-GS27 or Canon MV890

Panasonic is cheap and powerful. Canon has good specs.
#16
Very good list and a lots of work involved. Thanks edi!
Out of those I would stick to Pannies and Canon.
Let Samsung make good phones :D

Been a while since I saw you online Kommunist. Hope you are spending time in improving ur new home.

Well.. I finally moved in. Sort of. :)
Anyway, I am going to disappear for another two or three weeks starting this Friday...

Latest addition to the list is a SONY miniDV camcorder for £202 by paden69

Thanks to you paden

i have just seen a camcorder at woolies for about sixty pounds !
#22
I'd def. go for the Panasonic out of these. Sony and Samsung aren't a great choice in this price range.

In short, there are several formats you can use in digital camcorder:

DV tape - often confused with MiniDV but in reality is different (bigger tape). Professional format.
MiniDV tape - most digital camcorders are using this type of tapes.
Digital8 tape - Sony proprietary format, which is still on market but sort of dying.
MicroMV tape - yet another Sony invention that never took off. Using MPEG2 as recording format, so it is difficult to edit.
DVD disks - using MPEG2 as a format, diificult to edit but it is the "everyone must get it even if it is rubbish" sort of thing.
HDD (hard drive based) - normally using MPEG2 or even worse MPEG4 for encoding.
Memory card-based (SD, CF, etc) - these are normally produce rubbish picture due to plastic cheapo optics and high compression. Sort of camera in mobile phone really.

In short, if you want to edit your video then make DVD or whatever, go for MiniDV (less compression, easier editing and such). If you want to immediately show to everyone your video without editing, then go for DVD-based. IMHO. :)

I was thinking about getting one for my daughter to play with - she likes singing and dancing...thought it might be a cheap option to save her breaking a more expensive one.
As much as i would love one of the others i just really cant afford them

You do pay for what you get Kommunist, and I don't think anyone paying £50 for a camcorder would expect much from it...
#35
I dont think the Woolies ones are camcorders. Just another device that can make a movie in MPEG mode. Several of these in ebuyer too and I deliberately omitted them while compiling the list.

Might temp someone looking for a cheap movie maker. Thanks Katherine :)

no offence...not everyone is as technical.
I just think for kids they are a great entry level camcorder to see if they take to them

But isnt dvd format alot better for picture quality and sound etc ??
surelly the mini dv tape version after a few 50 runs will start to have imperfections to the quality, the dvd format on the other hand will be good every time unless you scratch the thing.
#38
Im actualy looking for a video camera just now and i would sway more to buying the dvd version (altho dearer) it will have better pic quality and sound PLUS you dont have to fart about connecting leads up to the dvd recorder to record on to cd and waiting for it to copy.

Im watching this thread very curiously lol

EDIT: Katherin yeh that looks a fine camera just for the kids to play with picture and sound might not be great and memory would be a must for upgrade to get longer recording time,
go on buy it for your daughter she will love it :-) wish i had one when i was wee, your daughter will be over the moon to be actually be able to record herself.
just remember to lock the bathroom door when your in the shower.... << HINT !! the cheeky wee begger might do a spot of home movies  rofl
