I book a few of these every year. I always try to combine them with a megabus/megatrain ticket and pop to london for some christmas shopping etc. (Used to be £10 rooms but as megabus is usually less than a tenner both ways I can still get a weekend in London for £40)

Might try shopping somewhere else this year too.

Do be careful. Some people have been stranded without a bed for the night and Travelodge were investigated by BBC's Watchdog programme.

Travelodge have been in trouble for overbooking but hopefully have the issue sorted:

Calling the customer careline number on the day before you leave might be a good idea.

I have to say that i have never had any problems with travelodge and i have stayed there a lot.Looking at the article,at first glance it sounds disturbing but reading more into it, i noticed that it is only 1 in 10,000 that were affected adversely and would say that their explanation was acceptable.

Good spot...was this in an email? I can't see any details on the actual website...

Not sure if it's convenient for you Artemis but I can recommend Leeds and York...so much to see in the latter besides the shops....as for Leeds great pubs within the City..like The Victoria behind the Town Hall.

I'm in South Wales so it's a longer journey but I wouldnt rule anything out. Coach trips don't bother me much as long as I have something to read :)

I'll give it some thought ta.

Thats damage control for you after being on Watchdog .

If anyone goes to a travel lodge - get there early or you may find you are going to another hotel instead - Travel lodge overbook and dont refund your money when you dont get the room.

It's a national hotel chain with what must be tens of thousands of rooms. I'm fine with them overbooking every now and again, and if it happened to me I'd be pissed but I'm not cutting off my nose to spite my face.

I've stayed with them numerous times and apart from the odd dodgy room (broken window or missing curtains etc), which they do attempt to fix, it's been great. For £15 (used to be £10) I'll live with having to hang a blanket over the window.

Just thought I'd weight to Travelodge, I've stayed with them and while they are quite budget, this was when they had family suite rooms for £10 double bed, sofa bed, desk &chair with a TV (on a horrible IPTV system) with a shower/bath/toilet/sink room with clean towels provided daily and while a phone system was available, was unneeded as I had a choice of WLANs to piggy back on (while my laptop had wireless, I used a spare usb wireless gadget stuck up on the window allowing for far better reception as inbuilt laptop ones are only good for WAPs which are nearby.
They are clean and basic compared compared to a proper hotel, but also by that measure a complete bargain showing how much of a rip off hotels are.

I highly recommend people staying at one of these to check local availability of amenities as they can sparse depending on where you stay.

Ideal for 1-3nights ie stop over/short term but not recommended for any extended stay.
