Just been into Currys and was informed by the manager that all Laptops that have Vista currently installed on them will be reduced by25 % from Monday 19th October.
This is due to the new Laptops being sold from Thursday with Windows 7 on.
The current laptops have an upgrade option for Windows 7 so should work out cheaper to get the current laptops then upgrade to Windows 7 via the promotional leaflet that comes with the laptop.
Manager does not know if this applies to PC World as they have not had notification of the price reductions yet.
Do not know if this available online as well.
Hope this is of use to someone.

If it's a genuine reduction it will be worth looking into if you get the Windows 7 upgrade voucher with them

You will automatically get Win7 upgrade for free(or postage costs) from the manufacturer when you buy. Its standard (if it has Vista Premium installed).

But remember the postage costs can be up to £30 - think I've seen figure between £12 and £30 depending on brand of machine. (Toshiba is ~£28)

you have to pay £27 to hp for them to send the windows 7 disc to you as that is what they say the post is to send it from germany to you ,asus do no charge postage and you will get it free most of the other company charge post

The manager I spoke to said the POS's have no date limit on them but he did state that the Windows 7 Laptops would take precedence on the shelves on the 22nd.

ACER charge £10-27

Has anyone got a full list of suppliers with prices for the Windows 7 upgrade, would be handy to know if you were choosing Vista Laptops and were stuck on say 2 or 3, the price of the upgrade may persuade you on one over the other.

Nope - "Upgrade Option program runs from June 26, 2009 through January 31, 2010. However, individual PC manufacturers may choose to offer the option for a shorter period."
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/upgrade-option.aspx

Most seem to be running it through to end of January. Still plenty of time to pick up bargain laptop with Vista premium pre-loaded.:-D

I don't know if Currys/PCW sell it but don't buy a Vista Acer Aspire 3410/3810T - chances are it was manufactured before September 15, 2009 and is subject to Acer's voluntary safety recall.

I bought one from Amazon last Sunday :-(. (who I note have now removed it from their website completely after emailing me about the recall)

I wonder if PC world and Dixons online will be doing this offer as well?

i'm in charge of the PC section at the currys store i work in, I don't know where whoever it was heard about this 25% off offer but its not on any official (or unofficial) communication from head office.

so i'm thinking this is either a manager at a store taking some very drastic action to clear stock or a blatant lie.

some stock barely clears 5% profit, so to stick 25% off them would mean massive margin losses. can't see it happening overnight any time soon.

and nothing happened like that when vista came out.

I have been thinking about getting a laptop the past week, but totally clueless on what make is good due to building my own pc I have never gone with a make really...can anyone recommend any good laptop makes, my dad and sister both got dell, and although I want to be impressed, I am not sure I can be, their laptops run slower than my pc...My pc is 3 and a half years old and their laptop is just over a year old...however I think that might be due to them not looking after them so good, my dads is getting blue screens of death saying his hard drive is failing...are dell good, has my dad and sister just got unlucky? - I would definatly buy a laptop if ths lead to a good deal but which makes should I try to stick to?

Thanks in advance.

This is just hearsay - if there is a genuine hot offer next week then please re-post with the actual details. Voted cold.

Where from. I need one. Can u give more details please

Well as all the displays will be changed for windows 7 launch on Thursday it wouldn't surprise me if the 25% off was on the display models to clear stock for the pre-loaded windows 7 stock. Then I would expect stores to send vista products back for central distribution, then head office can keep control of stock and prices.

Also if this is the case then I would expect it to be the same for base units.

I think its got to be on sale @ full price for 7 days.

Its something like on sale @ full price at some point during the last six months at one store.

So, if the machine has an RRP of £499 but they're selling it at £399 at the moment, then they could rightly have a 25% off sale which would be 25% off list price, so the machine would be discounted down from £499 to £375, so in reality just £24 off the actual previous price.

Not saying thats whats going to happen here, but it does happen - like those DFS sales where everything is 50% off 'must end sunday' (but they never tell you which sunday so they can keep extending)

TBH i cant see the sale happening - waifer thin margins on these things, even for Currys, so they'd sell at a loss.
#27
nah, currys will just sell off the remaining units in stores for as long as possible. Recalls won't usually happen unless a store has a mountain of a laptop they can't move.

deliveries into branch started slowing on most models last month and stopped with vista based machines entirely last week (only vista model brought in was a cheap emachine), all the desktops and laptops coming into stock recently are windows 7 based.

It's hard to recommend something not knowing what you want it for but my OH says avoid Dell (despite him having a Dell himself). We went through all makes before buying mine last week and got the choice down to a Compaq we saw on the Gadget Show or a Sony Vaio. In the end I bought a Vaio NS30E (cheapest on Play at £450 at the moment). It does what I want it to but that's just ebaying and mystery shop reports so nothing flash. Our daughter got a Mac Book which is a fantastic little machine although a bit expensive at £700 (plus £190 product support) but the princess must have the best for Uni grrrr. it has a seperate graphics card whereas mine is integrated so not as good for gaming apparently.

Anyway I'm very obviously not an expert but I was looking for the best dual core pentium at the
most reasonable price so went for the Sony after much research. It came with 2 years support as well and I'm happy with it. Maybe have a look at the Gadget Show site as they reviewed the best £400 ish laptops recently but didn't have the Vaio on despite them using it themselves on the programme for some odd reason. If you say what features you want and what you want to do someone will have a better idea for you I'd think. All I really know about is my own experience over the last few weeks trying to find something suitable for myself.

Hey, thanks, good point! I completely forgot to say what it would be for.

It would not need to be an amazing laptop, just surfing the web, on msn, mostly business use, possibly photoshop but most likely just office packages and using the internet, as I plan to just use it for creating articles, blogs and S.E.O techniques for my website, so do not need too high of a machine really, and I would only be buying if I found a good deal as I can just use my current PC but it would be good to move about sometimes.

Thanks for the help - the sony ones would be my first choice if I was to spend that much, sony products are usually great.
