This is a hard drive not a memory card. Hard drives official or not are still supported .

Looking at the close up pic of the back of the drive on the webpage it looks like an official one as it says MICROSOFT on it, also the pic of the box looks official

Great price by the way:) - Has anyone used this site before - how long does it take to get stuff

It takes around 8 days to arrive. The sites amazing i use it all the time for little ds parts

It definately isn't official at that price (or in the dodgy looking packaging). Currently MS has so far ignored users of fake HDD drives as they are fairly limited. It is very easy for them to block though so please bear in mind your drive may stop being recognised after a future update.

You can actually make these yourself for about £36 using a western digital 250GB drive, a little DOS hack tool and the casing from any other drive:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150513

Either way I would always check Xbox scene before updating to make sure it won't loose your data.
#8
Not sure its worth the risk if M$ might block you? Definately not a genuine MS product
#9
Definately fake...jus look at the font on the packaging lol. Probably get blocked in the future too
#10
not an official microsoft product, but a good price, although what will it cost plus tax...
#11
Don't get taxed on items this cheap anymore?
#12
Does say Microsoft on one of the pictures- http://www.dealextreme.com/photogallery.dx/sku.30827~seQ.2
#13
OEM/non official harddrives are rumoured to get you banned.

All 360 harddrives are signed with a unique ID, so its pretty easy for them to tell which are non official.

EMS so you wouldnt pay any tax

if you go DHL route for delivery in under 7 days then you'd only pay VAT as its under £100

As it's over £20 you will get taxed VAT plus admin charge when it enters the country providing dealextreme tell the truth on the form (may or may not, someone else may know) if they do expect about £7 VAT + £5-7 royal mail admin = £12-14 to pay.
#16
Dealextreme usually post as 'gift', so they 'may' escape customs. However, there is no way I'd trust dealextreme with a sum of money that large. I don't mind buying stuff from them, but they are so unreliable that if things go missing, you won't be seeing the money again. If you can afford to lose it, then go for it.

I don't suppose you could point me in the direction of a 'how-to' for this? I've not been interested in the xbox 'scene' as I don't want to chip my xbox, but a cheap hard drive would be a nice option.

Nice deal.

Pity the machine it attaches to has the failure rate of a chocolate fireguard

Microsoft are not interested if the hdd is official or not. If these are NOT official drives the HDDs will be the exact same ones that are in the officials as they will be reflashed hdds and formatted with tools that are erm... 'available' on the internet freely. :whistling:

I personally think its a great idea, if it wasnt for me having a 250gb (self made) on my main XBOX360 (I play this one online) and 120gb on my 2nd XBOX360 (bought this hard drive 2nd hand from CEX for £45 5 months back for my old 20gb model which I use in the bedroom/offline)

What they are however interested in is Piracy for obvious reasons (and they are nuking XBOXs galore presently)

In short, non-official hdd = Accessory = not a big deal - basically Microsoft have bigger fish to fry and simply don't care

Modded Xbox playing pirate games = THEFT = The Big M is gonna get ya (if you play bent games on a console that is online)

One of the MAJOR perks of a much larger HDD is you can install the games to the Hard drive (its official and fully legit) thus playing the game off the HDD without the noisy DVD drive spinning in the background.

NOTE: The game has to be in the drive to verify you own/have it (like most PC games these days), but its well worth installing for the quiet gaming

Oh I know its early but incase I dont post again :santa:

Merry Christmas one and all lol

Its a ticking timebomb, microsoft are starting to clamp down on the whole lot, from gamertag/save hacking to piracy. Theyre already starting to block 3rd party memory cards, it is a matter of time before they turn their attention to harddrives.

The update coming out on xbox live on November the 17th disables all un-official storage devices.

Don't waste your time/money.

That quite clearly says 'Memory Unit' and has been posted multiple times in this 2 page thread already.

This is a bargain :o as above interested to know if this is the WD drive.
#24
All it takes is one update and - zap, you cannae use it
it sucks, yea

Not worth the risk imho
#25
To be honest, even though I own a 360 and I'd love to be able to store games on the drive, I think I'd rather put this money into buying a 250gb PS3 as it least you can turn these on without having to listen to the a Euro Fighter Typhoon on full afterburn underneath your TV.
#26
Worst case scenario you're left with a 250GB HDD you can't use in a 360. MS have only said they will remove support for MUs not ban for it. Can't see why they would do any different to HDDs.
#27
bought stuff off these before claiming to be official when it came back it was an heap of $%^& stay well clear

What was that?

DX very rarely advertise items as 'Official' as almost all of their stuff is just very cheaply made chinese copies.

This will not be Official for obvious reasons.

really cant see a ban....a lot of people have been banned (not me) and wont be getting any updates from xbox live to disable it. So could be handy....

Huh ?
The delivery service has no bearing on whether you pay duty or not ! It's liable to 15% VAT whether it's sent by EMS or DHL or any other service you choose.

Whether you actually have to pay anything, depends on the value that DealExtreme mark on the form - anything over £18 is subject to VAT.

Will get you banned!

No you won't, you plum.

These are probably not genuine (99% sure).

But Microsoft will not block you if you use this.
They may do in the future - but i seriously doubt it.

No point if you can't install to the HDD after a ban. Might as well use a 20gb.

This is poor advice simply because you cannot guarantee that this will make the case. Microsoft make alot of money from selling accessories, (take the 360 arcade) it's likely they will take notice at some point.

I don't understand why M$ can ban you for using a non-MS add-on for their product. On what grounds can they do this? Surely its anti-competitive and surely against at least one law?

Which is why they haven't said anything about banning.

All they have to say is it costs them money to be able to support third party devices (which could be complete nonsense) but it gives them a valid excuse to remove support for them, but not ban.

IIRC DX have an option on there where you pay $0.01 and they send the package as a gift. So if you were to buy this as a gift for yourself you might not have to pay customs.

But then again they might just open it anyway :whistling: either way it still beats an Official priced one by a long shot.

I'm wondering if this is merely a sourcing of the actual make and model of HDD Microsoft uses?

If it is the same HDD then there's nothing to worry about (although mention of a DOS hack makes me wonder).

You can buy (at 'normal' retail prices) the same HDD Microsoft use in the 120gb drive and install that yourself at a fraction of the 'official' cost.
There's no hack and you've done nothing that could possible be considered worthy of being banned for - afaik nobody that ever did this has been banned.

It is the exact same Western Digital hard drive as Microsoft use in their 120gb unit. No hacks or dodgy messing required, just an empty hard drive case to put it in.

Not quite.

If you read that guide the hack is clear. For the 360 to recognise the DIY HDD you have to dump an Official BIN onto the DIY HDD.

I am positive this will not be an official 360 HDD. afaik the official 250GB isn't even out yet.

Its the exact same method for the 120gb and the 250gb hdd. You hack the drive's firmware.

This is defo unofficial. MS arent even selling the 250gb hdd's seperate from the bundles.
