I have a 120Gb version of the "WD Passport" USB drive already & was considering buying an additional 160Gb model; so thanks for posting about the even higher capacity drive.

The LaCie drive looks very cheap in comparison; does anybody have any experience of LaCie kit [I do not].

PS. Worthy of a mention...

...Folk with computers that limit USB power will need an extra, two-port cable to power the drive, WD admitted. Such a cable is not bundled with the drive, alas. At the time of writing, WD hadn't revealed how much it will charge for this "optional" accessory.

Lacie drives are ok...... 2 years warranty....

fanpages, I'm more concerned about that e-store than the drive! LaCie drives are good.

The WDs, though, are SLICK.

Thanks... just gone to my documentation to check, and my existing Western Digital Passport device is 1 year.

The point here is, I guess, that it's just as easy to lose 120Gb as it is to lose 250Gb of data due to misuse such as accidental damage, but the potential to corrupt data is at least twice as high if there is twice as much data on a drive.

I wonder if there are any recorded tests of LaCie versus Western Digital kit.

Will see if I can find any links...

:)

I have had one or two 'hiccups' with mine when it has locked up during a read or a write process, and upon restarting the affected clusters have been lost, but I guess you get that with any hard drive that is connected to a Windows operating system.

I am impressed by the size of the Western Digital drive though. The LaCie offering looks a little more bulky.

Granted, not the same drives (i.e. not the Western Digital 250Gb Passport vs the LaCie 250GB, 2.5" USB 2.0,5400 RPM,8MB), but...

(80Gb WD Passport)
"The Western Digital WD Passport is a fast, easy, inexpensive way to take and transfer large files on the road."
7.0/10 "Very good"

(80Gb & 120Gb LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Drive, & 80Gb LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Drive with triple interface)
"LaCie's Rugged All-Terrain portable hard drive is an all-around winner: it's fast, it's durable, and it boasts multiple connection options. This belongs in your laptop bag."
8.3/10 "Excellent"

Damn!

Don't know whether to buy one now.

The internet is it's own worst enemy sometimes! By the time I make a decision you can bet the Misco price will have gone upwards :)

This looks like a misprice, otherwise it’s a bargain.
I had a 160GB Lacie mobile drive and was very happy with it. It was particularly light even for this class of device.

Hi all,

I've had the 250Gb Western Digital Passport drive (from Misco) for about a week now, and have just received a shipping (by Royal Mail Special Delivery) e-mail notification from eXpansys regarding the 250Gb LaCie drive.

When it has arrived I can offer a direct comparison of both, but in the meantime, if you were at all worried, the LaCie drive was *not* a mis-price.

It did take them from 6 July until today (30 July) to despatch the drive though as they were waiting for stock.

Their site is currently showing "1-5" available, still at the same price I paid (£73.15 + VAT):

FYI:
The WD drive is still available from Misco at £99.99 + VAT:
