I got this box set, great films but the quality is very poor. Not up to usual Blu-ray standard at all!

I haven't actually seen these on blu-ray, but from what I've heard they are really bad transfers (28 DL especially)

Give them credit, they have to have something to work with for the super-duper edition, shame this is the culture with films now,

You could be right there. I will admit though, I'm a sucker for special editions, but I will always wait before buying the first release if I know there's a SE on the horizon.

That's because it was recorded in SD and upscaled for Bluray. It will look awful next to pretty much any other Bluray.

Why would any film be recorded in SD with half a budget behind it? It makes no sense.

They wanted the 'grainy' effect.
This really isn't worth buying on BR, just save yourself a couple of quid and buy the DVD version, the picture quality will be exactly the same.
