HP Inks can be quite expensive once they run out :(

Interesting... Can't find ANY compatible ink cartridges for it.

True, I bought one recently (an HP priinter/ all in one jobby) without doing my homework first. I assumed that its cartridges could be refilled like my old HP........ unfortunately not. Plan on ditching it soon to look for a printer that uses cartridges that i can refill myself. Only bought a few cartridges and its already cost the price of the hardware. 3rd party refills dont always even work on it, its a joke.
Its down to a chip HP inbed on the cartridges specifically so you have to buy their high priced OEM ones at refill time. Amazes me things like this are legal, but there you go.

Still, i'll do more research next time before I purchase on a whim!

I was set on getting this HP printer for £29 but your post made me change my mind. Decided to go for the Epson one you posted- it might cost me more upfront, but in the long run I'll save money as the inks are so much cheaper. So thanks

i bought this too Epson Stylus SX515W High-Speed All-in-One Printer with Individual Inks and Wi-Fi @amazon £54 cracking printer and scanner
got 3 sets of inks of fleabay for 7.50 delivered :o)

Epson every single time for me and has been for the past 10 years specifically because of the inks, HP inks will never be cheap because you change the printhead every time and if they're now chipping them too well....

As for the inks I find colour reproduction just as good maybe the Epson inks nudge it slightly but not enough to justify the price difference, longevity may be an issue if the print is hung in a high UV exposure area but then you'd put it behind glass to protect the print or have it printed professionally.

I printed some pics of the car park I worked at under water at high(er) tides to warn the public and laminated them they've just about survived the summer being outside 8 hours a day south facing they have obviously faded but are still perfectly viewable

That was definitely a good decision. I bought the epson sx515w 4 days ago and purchased 2 full sets of compatible cartridges (8 indvidual cartridges) from a well known auction site for £5.49. I wanted to test the compatibles before I bought more but I think if you buy more you can get them even cheaper. Quality of ink and prints is fantastic and printer is very easy to set up. Inks are easy to install, it detects the wi-fi connections from your pc/laptop and you're good to go in about 10 mins after you open the box!

I paid c.£48 from comet a few days ago (£59.99 on website, 10% discount applied at checkout, and £5 voucher from comet perks, 3% quidco)

Vaguely on topic, every time I visit my local tip / recycling centre there's always half a dozen or more nearly new HP / Lexmark printers in the electrical junk pile, presumably peeps have seen the replacement ink price too late and just junked them.

cold this printer is very basic ink costs a small fortune get a printer with a ciss system much better !

As posted above you can get inks for around £15 for b/w and colour. We have the next one up from this and it is a decent printer, though very noisy. We bought it very cheaply so no complaints, but it will be Epson next time for me too due to the ink issue.

I bought the Epson SX515W, however, when I replaced the ink cartridges with compatibles from fleabay, the nozzles on the Epson clogged up. I was adviced that the Epson printer does not accept compatibles, due to the "sophisticated chip" they use. In the end I just binned the printer adn got a Kodak instead.

Cheap refils from ebay can be hit and miss...BuyTech and Amazon are ok

It all depends on quality of the ink...but they do work well...Cartridge World seem to get it right but cost a bit more.

however, compared to other printers the price is excellent :)

Well considering you can buy decent compatible refills for 65p for the Epson printer someone listed and the replacement inks for the HP are around the £15 mark, I'd say the HP inks are vastly over-priced. Going by these costs the HP inks cost roughly 2,300% more than the Epson inks.

So Spaceinvader's comments weren't that stupid

Again show me some concrete proof that HP or Epson rack up the cost by 500%??????

Simple request really!!

Unit cost to make a brand cartridge is about 10% of retail price :)
I think someone did the maths on cost per gallon...$8000 thank you very much

Not forgeting the .. How Much Ink Is Left in That Dead Cartridge scam...

http://www.pcworld.com/article/152953/how_much_ink_is_left_in_that_dead_cartridge.html

Inkjet printers may have a number of disadvantages:

1. The ink is often very expensive. (For a typical OEM cartridge priced at $15, containing 5 mL of ink, the ink effectively costs $3000 per liter—or $8000 per gallon.) According to the BBC (2003), "The cost of ink has been the subject of an Office of Fair Trading investigation. Which? magazine has accused manufacturers of a lack of transparency about the price of ink and called for an industry standard for measuring ink cartridge performance".[11]
2. Many "intelligent" ink cartridges contain a microchip that communicates the estimated ink level to the printer; this may cause the printer to display an error message, or incorrectly inform the user that the ink cartridge is empty. In some cases, these messages can be ignored, but some inkjet printers will refuse to print with a cartridge that declares itself empty, in order to prevent consumers from refilling cartridges. Thus, Epson embeds a chip which prevents from printing when the chip claims the cartridge is empty, although a researcher who over-rode the system found that in one case he could print up to 38% more good quality pages, even though the chip stated that the cartridge was empty.[11]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inkjet_printer

However, Beware of some cheap (ebay) refilled cartridges as they are prone to leakage and can damage your printer
