Are you sure you want/need 8Gb? The 32-bit Windows in your Dell 9200 will only recognise ~3.5Gb. Get 2 of these - cancel 2x2Gb if you can.

Unfortunately not. Get 1x1Gb or 2x1Gb PC3200 from Play - preferably the PNY or Kingston modules for reasonable quality & good price. I recently purchased the PNY PC3200 1Gb & it does a good job for a bargain price.

OCZ 8GB PC2-6400 C5 Quad Channel Platinum Low Latency XTC (4x2GB)

I am thinking of buying two of these and selling my existing RAM on ebay. Will that work. Here are the results of my crucial scan and I think it will?

- I think it ticks all the boxes, it's non-EEC.......except it's not the right size.

After scanning my Dell 9200 I get told

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Also CL5 - isn't the fastest tho
(perhaps someone can let us know if CL4 or even CL3 is worth chasing after?)

The Cricial system scanner is very useful, it'll tell you what type you have & what you need.

http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/index.aspx

This looks the same kind of stuff as it turns up.

As has been mentioned XP is limited to only 'seeing' up to 3.5gb of Ram, but I don't think the unused 0.5gb will be a problem.......if you upgrade to Vista or the next Windows O/S you'll probably be glad of it (if they keep up their record for ever more RAM-hungry releases).

I'm thinking of putting in more RAM myself and maybe a graphics upgrade; I did consider a Quad upgrade (the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 1066Mhz is damned cheap right now) but tbh I think it's more a case of 'it would be nice' as there's really not a lot of genuine 'need' with the aps I use, the 9200 with a C2D E6700 is pretty speedy as it is.

You might just be better off making your 'front-end look nice with a lovely 24" monitor!

you can see play is selling it under 50% as most of the ram for this is £30
#22
Can I use £5 voucher to get the price under £10
#23
My Dell 530 takes DDR2 PC2-5300 with a max of 1gb per slot so sadly no good for me damn it.

Great deal though.
#24
You can get £2 off with code NEWPLAY08. Just tried it now, and got two for £25.98.
#25
Hot deal indeed.
2 lots of this (4GB) can be used in any Windows XP & Vista (32bit) but don't expect to see more then ~3.5GB being available.

If you have one slot of memory in use currently, consider losing that and replacing with a pair of these, only then will your PC make full use of the 'dual channel' capabilities of this type of memory.

No, in most cases. If you're a power user who needs to overclock, then it will be worth going for better clock timings.

I have a 530 and the manual which I have just downloaded from Dell says up to 2GB modules can be inserted up to a max of 4GB, which is stingy if you have a Quadcore based system.

The Play.com description vacillates between PC5400 and PC5300, but they are pretty much interchangeable.

hi, im no geek so i would rather check with someone who knows their stuff before i buy! :-D

On the Corsair website it says my Dell Vistro takes 'Memory Type DDR2-667 (PC2-5300)'. As this Ram is PC2-5400, will this work in my machine? (i would be buying 2 sticks and replacing my existing ram)

Thanks in advance!
#29
It depends on the clock speed. In theory PC5300 is clocked at 667MHz and PC5400 at 675MHz, but the difference is minimal. The throughput in most cases is 5336Mbits/s and some manufacturers round up and others round down, hence 5300 and 5400 describing the same.
I would not match a 5300 and a 5400 in the same slot pairs to be on the safe side, but there is no problem having them in the same machine.

Voucher Boy

Don't know if it will revert to full price later, but you've got nothing to lose......

It may be cancelled due to voucher misuse, by which time the price has gone up. Also you risk getting your account banned as they have done so in the past. Hardly worth it to save £2.

It's a scorching deal at 13.99 and it already carries the risk of being cancelled due to being a misprice. No need to add to the risk.

800 will work in your PC. It will just show up as 667 if that's the max your PC can handle.
