Good price note these do not always have a UK warrantee from the manufacturer. However scan provide their own warrantee for 3 years.

Seems like 5 minutes ago when I paid more than this for a 640... Madness!

Good price note these do not always have a UK warrantee from the manufacturer. However scan provide their own warrantee for 3 years.

The clue is in the product ID code: HD204UI/Z4. All Samsung drives with P/N with "/anything" are pure OEM units sold to manufacturers & system integrators. All 3-year warranty replacements are dealt with direct with the retail supplier, Scan themselves.

Don't forget that these are 4K sector drives, but they present to the OS as 512-byte sector drives. Hence, you must align your partitions to 8-sector (512-byte sectors that is) boundaries. Windows 7 does this automatically, but XP doesn't (sorry, I don't run XP so I can't tell you the magic incantations needed).

FYI:
There appears to be a known problem with this drive:
Patch tool for Identify fail during NCQ write command.(Model: F4EG)
==========================================

If identify commmand is issued from host during NCQ write command in the condition of PC not external , write condition is unstable.
So It can make the loss of written data.
(Model : F4EG HD204UI, HD204UI/Z4, HD204UI/UZ4, HD155UI, HD155UI/Z4, HD155UI/UZ4)

Just bought the same drive (HD204UI) last week from Scan.
When I use the Samsung hdd warranty checker, the below result was returned:-
Code 103 The product has been brought in from outside of this service region and cannot be serviced. Please contact your reseller or distributor.
So I guess the warranty replacement has to be dealt direct with Scan.

Surely the also on Todays special offer (and cheaper £50.39) 2TB Hitachi Deskstar, 0F12117, CoolSpin 5K3000 SATA III 6Gb/s, 5900rpm 32MB Cache NCQ is better value?

Backward compatible with SATA II 3Gb/s, but future proof (well as future proof as the next PC component, but at least current)
