Gas is gonna be expensive mind, just to let you know. It's around £35 for the initial bottle

There's easy ways round that - either buy a bottle off ebay if there's one close or visit your local civil amenities site, they'll more than likely let you have one that someone has dropped off there for a few quid, then just take it and go get a refilled one. Problem solved!

I got one from my tip £5, thought it was a caravan one, turned out to be from a forklift but I took it to a caravan place shop and they still swapped it for a new one. Had to get a different regulator for it though as the one you get with these bbqs is normally for a green "patio gas" bottle type which is the same gas as the orange big bottles (propane).

Think it cost me £20 for the refill (swap) for 13kgs of propane

Thats quite big, but good value for money

Forget Gas- I have an expensive large gas BBQ- waste of time, have to refill bottle, large and cumbersome, nightmare to clean.

Take my advice- get what most professionals use- a Weber kettle. See for example the BBQ Pit Boys on Youtube. The Weber will last 10-20 years, cooks food superbly via indirect heat, you can smoke food on it, and it takes minutes rather than half an hour to clean up afterwards- in fact you only really need to clean it once a year.

No gas bottles to buy. Get a Chimney starter to go with it and lighting the coals is easy.

And if you get a Weber don't bother getting a cheap imitation at half price- get the genuine article.

Webber Kettles are junk. Mine rusted thro after 18 months. Gas one has been going well for the last 5 years!!

After going through a couple of gas BBQ's over a few years I went back to charcoal last year.

Cant see me going back to gas again - The good old fashioned way is just a more "fun" experience (cant think of a better word).

With gas I sometimes felt I might as well be doing it on the cooker.

Couldnt agree more.

A BBQ is charcoal - nothing else.

You must have had a dodgy one. Look at the reviews on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. The thing is covered in enamel- your enamel MUST have been smashed off or missing.

OK - so it doesn't taste quite the same but its more than made up for in ease. I've had several makes/types types over the years inc a Webber kettle [which was actually pretty good] but, personally, I get to enjoy more [which usually means drink more] when using a gas BBQ - as its so simple. To be honest I found them all a bit of a pain to clean - so I tend to put it on full for a while 'to kill the germs'
cheers
John
