I've recently upgraded my contract after speaking to customer services; about a new contract and that I missed the offer they had last summer and that I was thinking about leaving to another operator because of the credit crunch.

So they offered the £20 deal they had during the Summer
-1200 Free Xnet minutes or texts
-300 3to3 minutes
-Sony phone (choice of any phone available now)

He did offer me Broadband with deals but didn't want any of them -same as website)
The negative bit is: 18month contract

What handset did they offer?

This isn't a deal. Just because they offered you doesn't mean it's freely available to everyone.

just because they offered you doesn't mean you'll get it either.

3 are sneaky at times, 18 month contracts agreed verbally magically become 2 years!.

though what I tihnk the OP was suggesting is anyone who's up for renewal can try the same speech and get something similar, rather than acceting an inferior package offered now.

That's why I put contract upgrade, with a free sony c905 phone and paying almost half price for that many minutes, I'd say it was a deal.

p.s. the free xnet minutes are free anytime anynetwork minutes in the UK

This is not true - you get an 18 month contract but if you are still within your previous deal you have to wait for that to finish before the new one starts - for example with three you can upgrade after 15 months - but that means your new contract wont start for another 3 months although you will have the new phone. You can still upgrade again in 15 months of the new contract which will make 18 months (hope that makes sense)

My dad upgraded couple weeks ago, kept his current phone, got 700 Mix and match (normally £21), 300 3 to 3 minutes and after some haggling, they added unlimted landline calls bundle for free all for £16 a month, on a 12 month contract with the option to upgrade at anytime to a newer contract. Pretty happy with that as he was going to go for the Orange Racoon 15 for £15 a month for 300 x net minutes and unlimited landline.

Bought him a new three nokia phone for xmas and he is happy.

Mmh, have a look at my post from another thread, three offered me an even better deal it may be worth haggling with them over the phone, they might not give in immediately but will usually call you back a week later with an even better offer:

I've never really had much of a problem with three, but also have never really felt satisfied with their service, until recently.

My contract came to an end so I had decided to get a sim only as I didn't want to be tied in to another long contract. Three gave me the pac code, but two weeks later they called me up and offered the following:

750 minutes
150 texts
75 video calling minutes
5 pounds of dl content
A nokia 6500 slider with 3.2mp camera

... all for only a fiver per month, on a 12 month contract, renewable every year until the rest of my life if I so wish.

For a fiver I said yes.

Worth trying to cancel if your contract is expiring soon. Two things to bear in mind: when you call them to cancel, make sure you mention that you would like the iPhone as they can't compete with that, and also state that the contract length is too long. Give it a couple of weeks and they'll give in. Suppose they'd rather have a bit of money from me then no money at all.

LssL, that is one amazing deal, I'm now gutted with this deal, it may be better than most but its rubbish compared to the deal you got. Congrats, I'm going to have to wait 15months before I can start haggling with them again to get similar to your deal.
