3, the mobile phone operator, has announced that from the 17 June, customers will be able to get the UK's first £0 a month contract service.

Called SIM ZERO, the operator hopes to make its money from people making phone calls rather than paying an up front fee to get connected.

As a lure to entice new users to ditch other services, 3 will offer free Skype-to-Skype calls and IM in the hope that customers will make the odd "real" phone call.

Where once the £35 a month contract was common place, prices are now falling", says Andy Nuttall, Head of Pay Monthly.

Customers of the contract will also get free voicemail in the UK for the 1 month minimum term contract.

Call prices will be 20p per minute for all standard calls, 10p per text, and 30p per MB of data within the UK.

The offer won't come with a handset, instead requiring people to bring their own.

So what do you get for this headline-busting deal? Nothing, in a word. There’s no free handset to choose from, no inclusive minutes, no free texts and no data bolted on the side. Instead what you get is unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls, free instant messaging and free voicemail.

Was going to buy a cheapo £10 '3' handset off ebay for the sake of this. Can anyone comment on the quality of Skype< -->Skype calls on '3'. I suppose for the risk of the cost of a handset it's worth a try...........

Hmmm no contract but pay for your calls.................isn't this called PAYG?!!!!

My thoughts exactly

you have to have full 3g signal - the normal g signal does not work.

i am on 3 at the mo - and boy is it a pain to get decent reception - even with the full 3g signal, calls dont always go through
#8
I've had a similar tariff for around 6 or 7 years on 3,direct debit takes money for calls made every month.
Not used it in ages but get a monthly bill for £0.00,calls are 10p a minute i think but you won't get that tariff now
#9
But does your PAYG give free skype to skype calls. this could be what exactly what some people need rather than paying for expensive contracts. So can t we keep 2 hones one for just making skypecalls and other normal phone calls.Am I missing something here.

Gotta say, I think people are being very harsh on this deal. It's no worse than PAYG in terms of on-going call costs and for low volume users you have the convenience of not having to top up, free voicemail and skype calls.

Is it for everyone? Nope, not at all. But I can see this being useful to low-volume users especially if you've got a spare 3 handset floating around that can Skype and want free calls to other Skype users. Voting it cold seems unfair as there IS value and convenience here over PAYG for some users.

You can get a credit limit on the account set to £0, so you will NEVER have to pay for a incoming mobile with FREE Skype Mobile, and FREE MSN on the mobile. So not a bad deal really.

I've been with 3 for ages with no problems, skype works fine, I talk to my family in the states and africa all the time for FREE, Don't know why people voting cold?
Its not great for everyone but if you got friends and family overseas then i think you could do worse.
I use a nokia N96 which works in most places except the frozen food section of my local sainsburys.
Hope this helps.

I've always remembered Alan Carr's opinion of '3', voiced in his "Tooth Fairy live" dvd which was also on Channel4 the other night. Let's just say he's not a fan..........

YES, this is a good deal. It's basically PAYG but you don't have to worry about running out of credit at an important moment and you don't have the hassle of topping up.

As for reception I did find it bad when I lived in Teeside but since I've moved over to the North West I've never had any problems with reception.

This is a good deal in my opinion, for me....

Reason,

I pay £30 a month for 700 minutes and 500 texts, free 3 to 3 minutes plus unlimited Internet.
(Im on an old taffif.)

This offer also gives you FRRE 3 to 3 mobile calls which will work out good for me,(upto 5000 minutes in 90 day period) - 300 minutes on the £15.00 a month option, and unlimted texts.

http://www.three.co.uk/Pay_Monthly/SIM_Only

I will continue to use my N95 --

Just got to ring them in the morning and cancel.... been meaning to do it for months!!

Actually yes it does if it has a 3 sim in it and can use their skype client, you don't need to have a contract to make use of the free skype calls.

I think 3pay is much hotter.....If you top up £10 every 3 months you get free internet, 2000 free sms to anyone, free 3 to 3 calls.

And then if you don't top up you still get free skype and msn.
#21
Had this deal for years with Orange, they used to match any other companies deals and Virgin were offering £0 per month for contract, 15p for the first 5 minutes of calls and 5p per minute thereafter. My phone bill for two telephones comes in, on average, about £2.00 per month for both phones

I make very few calls but people can always call me if necessary and I do not have to worry about topping up

It suits me and I think this 3 deal is good, what have you got to lose?

I found 3 to be really good for reception and excellent for using any data service on your phone - messenger, skype, web etc.

The major problem with 3 is the Indian call center, It Is nothing like any other I have ever encountered. It's your worst nightmare come to life, the staff blatantly lie to you, argue with you and will endlessly ignore your requests.

If you want to know what being depressed feels like take out a 3 contract then phone the Indian call center and try to cancel your contract.

I have tried using Skype via 3 for me and my partner some time, and it's a good idea, but there are some caveats to this; the biggest being that the handset you are Skyping has to have it's client running. PCs are more likely to have the client running (so it's less of an issue), but for handsets, it'll have an impact on battery life - and that's not to mention any reception issues. Also, it may be worth minding if your handset can't run the software in teh background (if there are any!)
At the moment, I use Skype for pre-arranged calls. I cannot imagine using Skype to replace day-to-day calls with friends.
In other words, as long as you don't expect this deal to replace a regular phone, this is a hot deal!! :-)

I have a 3 phone paying £12 a month with 750min 150 texts 50min video and a nice Sony Erricson W595i. But I tried using skype on my phone and its a little annoying because when left skype on (which you need to do to let people contact you) it makes noises when people leave and join (which you can prob be fixed). The other person the other side said I wasnt that clear and you have to have somebody on the computer or 3 network (with their skype left on) to contacts.

So I dont think its worth just getting for the skype calls, I have had a contract with them for 5 years and every year they offer a better deal when I say I dont want to be with them on the last month and they call back offering a better one every 2-3 days.

I`ve got the original skype phone and even on 1 2g bar skype works a treat, yes it does drop calls but when i am phoning Australia all the time for free who cares.

PAYG needs you to top up in advance, and the credit expires after a while - you could put this in a phone, take the battery out and put it in the glovebox - if your phone doesn't work you've always got another incase of an emergency...

Is MSN data free though...?

Just a point worth mentioning for anyone considering this deal, just make sure you do a comparison of the call costs to/from a 3 mobile. I haven't checked recently, but I recall the costs being slightly higher to call a 3 phone, and to make calls to other mobiles/landlines etc. Something to bear in mind, although I imagine I'll be ripped apart if I've got that statement wrong, (be gentle?!).

On the plus side, I've been on a 3 contract (with free mins/text) for at least 4 years and I've been happy with the service, so I'm happy to continue. The addition of the skype service is a bonus for me. Anyhow good luck and all that :-)

(sorry if this has been covered earlier... although I did have a quick scan).

Am I missing something - if you don't need to credit your 3 PAYG to get Skype etc, then what is the advantage in getting this? :?

Last time I bothered to check, the fair usage policy for Skype was 4000 minutes a month, and for msn messenger was 10,000 messages.
Might have changed recently, but to answer your question, yes, the msn is free.

If you're already with them on PayG: nothing.
If you have a 3G capable phone and want to use Skype and MSN on the move, then this is how you get a sim to do just that ;).

Typical that 3 start with the blatent lie of "from the 17 June, customers will be able to get the UK's first £0 a month contract service" as when they launched in the UK one of the contracts you could pick was on the "3 to go" tariff which was exactly this. A £0 a month contract with no calls or texts included. Am still using this effectively as a PAYG service without the top-up hassle. Always seemed a good idea to me for those wanting a PAYG phone and have always been surprised that other operators did not pick up on it. The tariff was deleted years ago.

The downside is that you will be on 3.

cant seem to find these sims anywhere on the net - is this a store only deal or can u order sim of there web site and im just being blind and cant see it :P
1 Like #39
Seems you'd need to go to a store: http://www.three.co.uk/Pay_Monthly/SIM_Only

Or call them, except I wouldn't recommend that as their call centre is terrible. Just deal with stores in regards to '3' and you should be fine.

And Mike781: "typical 3 start with a blatant lie" isn't really a valid argument as every company does this, regardless of industry, and yes it's wrong, but don't tell me you aren't used to it by now. Every mobile company now advertises "unlimited internet" when it means "fair usage policy of 1GB" (that's 3's limit anyway, T-Mobile used to be 500MB, though they may have changed it recently). I'm also unimpressed by Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys' constant "basket" comparisons, but I don't seem much point in arguing that on forums.

I think this is the one on the 3 website
