What are the differences between the dongles? Some cost a lot more than others.

Yes but it'd be worth reading that thread before asking questions in this one.

Absolutely

I have one of these and use it when I go away, always had a connection no problem, also I prefer the freedom of not being tied into another contract.

Just had a look on the site, the top ups only last for thirty days, so basically ten pound a month, if i am reading it right.
As you can get the same service for a tenner month with the modem free, this deal is not for me.
Not voting cold, as im am sure its good for someone out there

You can actually get a free Modem + 5GB P/M for £7.50 P/M (above deal is 1GB) Excellent if you see yourself out and about for the next 18 Months. £1.86 P/W is peanuts, however be careful not to go over the 5GB limit

Im pretty sure its pretty easy to unlock these, so for £18 its not a bad deal in my opinion

Yeah. but you only pay your tenner if you need to use it during a 1-month period. You don't have to pay it if you're not going to be going anywhere where you're going to need it.

Useful for holiday, not so necessary when I'm at home...

It's true that the top-ups only last 30 days but not quite true to say it's £10 a month, as that assumes you'd be using it every month. The PAYG is really just for people who need the service occasionally, such as taking their laptops on holiday (in the UK I'd assume as I think roaming costs would be a hell of a lot), so you could just top up once or twice a year. On that basis, PAYG would work out cheaper than a £10 a monh contract even with a free dongle - and I think most the cheaper contracts tie you in for at least 18 months. Also not everyone can get contracts so this is the cheapest PAYG deal for them. It's not really fair to compare a PAYG deal to a contract deal as they're not aimed at the same people. This is the best PAYG deal I've seen, so whilst contract would definitely be a better option for some, if you PAYG is right for you, this is a hot deal.

You can use this dongle in the "3 Like Home" countries and there would be no extra charge beyond what you would normally pay in the UK.

Sorry mate http://threestore.three.co.uk/dealsummary.aspx?offercode=18M5ECD006

Its only actually £5.00 PM x 18, for 1GB
#17
The 18 months at £7.50 (5gb allowance with free usb modem) & £48 quidco looks the best deal if it comes off.

Would mean 18 x 7.50 - 48 = 87

87 / 18 = £4.83 per month
#18
Presume this doesn;t come with any credit so add £10 on to price before it can be used
#19
Terms & Conditions:
Where a Top-up is bought in store and a 16-digit code provided, the Top-up needs to be activated within 90 days of buying it. Once activated, Top-ups have no expiry date.

So for me ...a hot deal because I will use that 3 or 4 times a year on holidays ...

I am 3 for phone and Internet. I have the ZTE MF622 (black and green one) I had it a couple of months and the usb socket broke off the circuit board. I rang 3 customer services they aranged for it colleting next working day 2 days later they sent me a brand new one as it was not worth replacing. 3 customer services have improved loads. A lot of people that slate them do it just cause there call centre is based in India. Personally I have been with 3 for over 3 years now. I get a cracking deal out of them there service is great theres no way I would go to another network at the minute.

I am tempted to buy one of these as a backup!

Isn't that for phones? Thought the PAYG Mobile BB was different, in that once acivated you have 30 days to use the allowance?
#23
It is different, if you don't buy the mobile addon then you're charged a very very high rate per MB or whatever it is now. You're meant to add credit to your SIM then immediately buy the addon which deducts £10 from your balance - this expires after a month.

Anything sold, or any service offered by this company is a joke.

Yes, kinda. The Top-up credit still has no expiry date once activated, however on PAYG to get the allowance you must buy a Mobile Broadband 'bolt-on'. Once bought (from your top-up credit), that Bolt On is valid for 30 days.

Caveat to this: Once you run the Bolt On out, it will default to the normal PAYG data rate of £1/Mb.
So the best thing to do with one of these is just buy a top-up when you need to use it. Access via the modem to three.co.uk is free at all times (so you can top-up, check your balance etc).

When I had one on PAYG, I registered a debit card with them, so when I needed to use it I just plugged it in, logged onto three, topped up, got the bolt on, sorted, no top up voucher needed.

Fyi the E220 is the only one currently supported by Linux too. It can be switched to any payment plan for the roaming internet access.

****IF**** this were tue I would buy this! I have been waiting for the Mobile Broadband PAYG to become the same as PAYG mobile.

I object to paying monwey and then seeing it disappear simply because I didn't use it within 30 days. WHEN it becomes available as it is on mobiles I will buy this BUT not before!

RESULT! I checked the T&Cs under PAYG Mobile Broadband and they do indeed state that, once activated, within a 90 day period, there is **NO EXPIRY DATE**! JUST what I have been waiting for!

Printed off the T7Cs and will order after reading them under the cold light of day!

i just use my htc kaiser with the £5 per month add on and connect a usb lead.

Not strictly adhering to there t+cs bu works lovely:D

might get one though for step daughter

do they actually allow that? I was under the impression that they blocked using you phone as a modem on the £5/month addon?
#31
Other networks will have to come in soon to compete with all the deals 3 are putting out at the moment.

Sorry to burst your bubble...

The top up its self has no expiry. If you use that though, as per the thread, you'll be charged £1 for every 1MB.

The broadband add-on, which gets you the 1GB for £10, is an addon - it is that which has the expiry. You purchase the addon for £10, using the £10 credit (which has no expiry), the £10 is deducted and the addon expires 30 days later.

this is all getting very confusing

Personally I would be tempted to wait till christmas/new year before buying one of these, because all the mobile companies will be offering new/better deals than this.

I spoke to a 3 rep on the online chat system they have (possibly the best thing customer service move 3 have ever made?) and apparently you have to top up, and convert your top up to a mobile broadband add on online. If you do not convert it to the add on, you will be charged £1 per mb. You can also do this over the phone apparently (although the customer service guy took ages to actually tell me that)

The guy also gave me a code for £10 worth of accessory vouchers, which I won't be using, so feel free to give it a bash - PP16100821. If it doesn't work, then I suggest you click on the 'talk to a representative' type button on the 3 website, and ask for a code!

good luck :-)

Hmm, I just have a quick question which I know there's any easy answer to, but just to make sure.

I'm currently not a 3 customer. Do I need to purchase one of their SIMs (£9.99, including £10 credit) to use with the modem? Or does the modem come with a SIM already?

I've had a similar experience whenever I've had problems with 3 phones. They send a courier to collect and replace the handset. you keep the battery, SIM, etc...

Question:

I have a 3 SIM with x-series silver... (1GB internet allowance)

If I get this dongle, can I put my SIM in and use it with a computer?

Will I need to install any software on the computer to make the dongle work? (XP install)
