Whilst on the hunt for a Medion Netbook in Sainsbury's managed to get from the cigarette counter a 3 PAYG Skype Mobile for £12.49. Not sure how good they are but essentially bought for the mother in law to keep in contact with her son who is abroad and uses skype.

----[ Important information ]--------------

For those of you buying this for the "free" Skype calls: You have to remember that you need to add at least £10 credit every 3 months in order to use the Skype feature. The credit you add can then be used for normal (non-Skype) calls.

Someone's spammed your post on the 3 modem, no idea way, although it had been posted before.

might be worth phoning a couple of your local stores or just calling main customer service on 0800636262 and get them to check stock levels.

Interesting...I called a my local store who said they were out of stock as the model has been discontinued but checked another store a few miles away and said they had stock at £12.99 each :-D Stomper! or so I thought, so just before I jumped in the car, I thought I'd better double check with the actual store...called them up and they said, yep, have them in stock, but when they scanned, they scanned at £24.99!!!! :-(

In the Harpenden store they were priced in with a big orange price tag showing £12.49 and they even gave me a VAT reduction on the receipt. Hoping as it may well be discontinued someone else manages to get one.

Don't think it should have been spammed though! Many forum members may not have seen the post before.

This is true - but for £12 I think its a good deal - You can use the skype mins to call another skype phone (you dont need to use it as your main phone) - great for students or people having a long distance relationship!

Got one last night from Hamilton. Good price.

Good find mattywoz :)
#15
great deal - just reserved one

IIRC these can be used as a rudimentary 3G modem (not HSDPA but vanilla 3G) - when coupled with a 3 data add-on, these could be useful if you can't find a cheap dongle. Plus there's Pac Man on it too!

I'll admit I'm not entirely sure what this is.......I'm assuming it's a PAYG 3G mobile which you can use for FREE to chat with others on Skype? And therefore you should never have to top-up with credit? If so, fantastic - I was going to buy a wifi-enabled Skype handset but this sounds even better.

You do have to top up in order to use the skype facility - I think it is at least £10 per month although the skype part is free and doesnt use any credit - (can someone confirm is it every month or every 3 months)

Sort of - 3 will let you make Skype calls, I do believe it may use data which you need to pay for. Can't remember quite how it works, I think if you pay for say £10 of credit per month, you get some Skype time too. No credit, no skype. I think.

Its ok I have found it on the tinternet - you only need to top up once every 90 days to keep the skype facility so £3.33 a months - definately a great deal!

Free Skype Calls on 3
Free Skype calls on 3 are for Skype to Skype calls made from the UK or while roaming on a 3 sister network (valid for 90 days from activating a top-up on Pay As You Go).

Skype and 3 Skypephone on Pay As You Go.
A fair use policy applies, available on compatible handsets - 4,000 minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls (both Skype-to-Skype and Skype Call Phones Abroad) and 10,000 Skype Chat instant messages in the 90 day period of activation. If the fair usage policy is exceeded within the 90 day period from activation 3 may block outgoing Skype Calls and Skype Chat instant messages, users will still be able to receive Skype calls and Skype Chat instant messages. If no Top up is applied access to Skype will be blocked after 90 days. To access Skype again, or reset the fair usage policy the user just needs to top up their phone. 4,000 minutes of Skype-to-Skype calls and 10,000 Skype Chat instant messages per 90 day period after each top up. If the fair usage policy is exceeded within the 90 day period from top up 3 may block outgoing Skype Calls and Skype Chat instant messages, users will still be able to receive Skype calls and Skype Chat instant messages. If no further top up is applied access to Skype will be blocked after 90 days. To access Skype again, or reset the fair usage policy the user just needs to top up their phone.

i had one, now i have the slightly newer version.
batt lasted a good few days for me, if you dont use it for skype turn skype off as its constantly using the HSDPA which takes a lot of batt.

others saying get a 3G phone with skype on it. - i hav tried this and they r **** for skype, not being built for it the app is bs on it, takes forever to login , cant do chat ect

whereas this works, talk and chat, save myself so much money keeping in contact with skype rather than txt/normal mins

my wife is away on a course for 5 weeks so we bought one of these a while back and are on skype 2 hrs a day or so, works great, this phone is pretty good, nice size and easy to use. skype is far easier than i thought it would be.
#31
The price is good - but the phone is dire - and to be honest - if you use it heavily you might need to charge it twice a day - so COLD as they are basically clearing junk that three withdrew from their own site ages ago.

If you use this SKYPE facility do you still have to pay for the 3g charge or internet charge whilst connected with your phone?
If so this will prove expensive to use these abroad as you need an internet connection to use SKYPE?

Can someone please advise....:?

EVEN ABROAD LIKE THE USA....??

Going with friends in April so maybe a good way to stay in touch in the parks??

Very good find.

Unfortunately you can't get free Skype access on this phone in the US whilst roaming. You can when roaming on 3's networks in Austria, Denmark, Italy, Ireland, Hong Kong and Sweden.

You're best of with a phone with wifi. I've used my xda with skype many times abroad when I find free wifi, which isn't too difficult in the states.

Yes I used to use Fring on my N95 when traveling in the US. Although Fring can be quite clunky it seemed to work OK via wifi.
