With component output this thing looks like a bargain - I can't find a review (only looked briefly) that mentions fan noise, but it's surely got to be quieter than my desktop!

The pdf mentions that it doesn't have a cooling fan tom. Quote:

High quality design, without cooling fan, provides noise free operation

the 160gig version is still available for home delivery and it costs £171 atpcmedia supplies so sounds like a bargain

I've had one of these for the past couple of years, it's nothing flashy but it's been a little beauty for getting media into the living room without the hassle and expense of a pc.

It plays most dvivx and all mpegs I've thrown at it over the years. There's also third party firmware available which imporves the GUI and adds a some minor extra features.

You just connect it as you would a dvd player you dont need usb on your tv!
This PDF has a diagram & it will come with a user manual as well, dont worry its easy as you like & cant see you having any trouble.
If your thinking of getting one I would be quick as this is a steal & they wont last long

You wont get anything like this for that price, best place is ebay & prob looking at paying double!

Im told PC world have loads of things still in local stores so maybe worth your while taking a trip
to your local, I wouldn't leave it long though as everything is being cleaned out :)

I managed to get a Core duo cpu for £10 & a media center pc case for £10 to build myself a media center pc but they've been pulled as well now.

Got mine a couple of days ago, impressions:
+ Nice design, firmware updatable with non-Freecom (google Mediagate-35 for other firmwares), plays files no problem from network, 1080i looks great - divx and xvid upsampled look fantastic, better than my Xbox1, 360 and previous dvd player, can play ISO files
- Having to install the NDAS drivers on each PC to be able to access the HD, Slow transfer via NDAS, simple interface lacks style (better ones available from the Yahoo Group dedicated to firmware modification for this drive), can't play .mkv files!

Overall for this price it's an absolute bargain, and you could change out the HD too. Even though I can't stream my 720p mkv files, I can still access my other network storage and stream xvid, divx etc quickly with no fan noise or faffing around. Not tried music or photos yet though.

@onlyme23:
I updated the software using a different firmware, and am using XP not vista, but I assume the principles are the same - cna you see the bark blue Freecom icon in the tray? If so right click, then select your drive (the top of the menu) and one of the options should let you access/mount the drive. NB The drive must be turned on! I think this is crackers as when it's on it contantly puts out a video signal which must be a big waste of electricity, but I suppose it's better than nothing. Make sure you're using wired ethernet from your pc to your router because on wifi it gets very slow when transferring to this drive.

Hmmm sorry mate, if it says it mounts I can't think of a reason why it won't show in 'My Computer' - I did use a different firmware though, http://mediagate.co.kr/english/download.php?class1=&class2= which worked for me when I did the same things, if you wanna give it a try?

can anyone that managed to get one tell me if you can stream from them to say a nokia n95 or an archos so that all PC's are off it's supposed to work like that but I am getting a bit sick of buying media devices that say they can do that but then only work the other way round like the archos 605 stream from PC to it LOL

Another example stream files to ps3 from the actual freecom , search for media player/server from ps3 menu, does the freecom showup, thanks especially people with the WLAN version
