Buffalo Linkstation Live HS-DH320GL, RRP is a bit high at £143.99 on Play.com

Not a bad price for a NAS. Its a slightly older model but if you are feeling brave you can upgrade the unit once you filled the thing.

thats a good price there http://www.picturehoster.org/storage/5.jpg

This I think is the back view, note it has 2 usb ports which I think can be used to piggy back at least 1 other drive into the network?

Yes, if its like the older (white) Linkstation then you can piggyback at least one USB drive (and do automated backups to it from the Linkstation). Should also be able to plug in a printer and use as a print server.

taking eveything into account, why the cold votes ?????? I am looking for a NAS drive . . .
[mod]#5
Its a good deal with lots of positive votes but there is a problem with them not showing atm, its being fixed as we speak.
I just ordered mine;-)

They're good VFM - I bought one for this price from Comet about 9 months ago and have been very happy with it.

Just bought, but then read the reviews and cancelled - whats the point in having gigabit ethernet if reading files off the hard drive is slow?!
Looking at http://reviews.cnet.com/external-hard-drives/buffalo-linkstation-live-nas/4505-3190_7-32308476-2.html?tag=mncol;txt
and doing the sums, comes to 3MB/s read speed, which is the same as my current NAS, which is **** to the point of being almost useless...

I have had one of these for a while now. Excellent NAS works very well. You can also hook up a couple of USB drives to the rear to share them out too, works very well.

Seems to have some bad reviews. Do any decent NAS' exist that I can RAID? I start to get scared of losing data when I have 500GB+!
#10
I've had one for a couple of years. mine might be the older model. it has been reliable but it is not quick and pretty noisy. but a good price.

Isn't NAs always very slow? That's my experience. But on the other hand, it is very handy, you can always access NAS drives which I find is not the case for drives attached to specific computers on a network; these are very unpredictable, will be accessible at some times but not others.

Not exactly glowing reviews on Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-LinkStation-Network-Storage-HS-DH500GL/dp/B000N9508K/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

And remember - NAS drives are ultra slow, even on gigabit networks.

Not really.
Some of us "godfathers" know there's more to a bargain than the price.

This has expired I think

Tried that. Twice in fact, no make that three times. First with a 2.8 P4 running XP, then a 1.6 C2D Celeron runnign win home server and then a Dell Poweredge 1.8 C2D running XP.

Each time I ended up going back to my trusty Buffalo NAS, and then stripping/selling the server PC. This is all within the last 12 months btw. For me none of them come close to the buffalo for ease of use. Its just like an apple product, minimum fuss it just works. The NAS is also considerebally quieter than my server attempts, and can sit on the side of my desk rather than needing a big space.

On a side note anyone after a top end nas

Linkstation Pro LS-XHL new model out

1.2ghz cpu and 256 meg ram

it does 45 meg a sec without jumbo frames

Do what I done if you update your PC use older bis to make a server PC & add drives to that.
I got an old AMD64X2 4200 with 5 drives in it you can use Gigbit network then if your computer & switch have it.

Yes but then power consumption of that is higher than this nas! A reason why I want something quieter and low consumption! on another note quidco only tracked £1.40 on the transaction, anyone else track the 4%?
[mod]#24
Mine tracked at £1.40 too.
