Kites. Surfing. Together at last. Well actually kite surfing has been popular since the early 1990s, but now it's taking off in a big way (spot the pun). You may think of kites as those things Mary Poppins and co loved to play with - gentle, pretty and a bit boring. But the kind of power generated by these surfing kites (which you can learn all about for only £35) can lift you clean into the air, and should not be underestimated.
When flying across the sky, a kite generates lift like an airplane wing. Since lift is proportional to the size of a kite, some kite flyers realized that if you make a kite big enough it would generate enough power to propel a vehicle on land, snow, ice or water. This type of kite is called traction kite. While a windsurfing sail is dependent on the wind to generate power, a kite is only dependent on the wind to fly. When a kite is flying across the sky, it creates its own wind (apparent wind) which is faster and therefore produces much more power than the actual wind can provide. If the apparent wind of the kite is twice that of the actual wind you will get four times as much power from the kite. Radical.
This one day course, worth £130 will take you through the theory and practice of kite surfing, which includes basic land based flying and kite handling. There are two locations in the South East; Sandwich Bay in Kent and Worthing in West Sussex. The kite surfing school will provide all the equipment; wetsuits, boots, kites…etc, all you need to bring is a towel, change of clothes, Food, Drink, Trainers, warm jacket and a lot of enthusiasm.
