  I've found that some cables just don't like certain sockets, although ironically the only problem I've had with this was with a more expensive cable. A cheaper one I bought works perfectly!

  I used to have lots of problems with my TV losing the HDMI (intermittent blue or black screens). I changed to expensive cables, as short as possible with ferrite collars, shielding, etc. Didn't do anything. Moving the cables well away from power cables made a small difference, but not much...
  
  Then my Thompson SkyHD box finally gave up the ghost and I got a new one... not a single problem since.

  Monster cable over-rated in the digital age.
  
  I have cables that are not gold-plated and they still work normally. Not that I am going to get rust unless I use cables outside.
