45 RPM is an outstanding collection of The Thes singles dating from the original (i.e., non-Soul Mining versions) of "Uncertain Smile" and "Perfect"--cunning synth-pop songs booby-trapped with furtive personal disaffection--right through to some previously unreleased new material, including a begrudging fondness for "the shallow hugs, the muted rage" of England on "Pillar Box Red", a zither-decorated number subliminally reminiscent of the Specials loungey melancholy (and not the first time Johnson has used the dreariness of British weather as a metaphor for his anaesthesias).
In between, theres plenty of evidence to confirm that Matt Johnson really has provided the most arresting coalescence of harmonica, acoustic guitar and tub-thumping agitprop polemic this side of that free-wheeling Dylan chap.

Brilliantly exploring the dichotomies between ethics and immorality; love and hate; life and death; good and evil, and East and West (regrettably, the increasingly bloody conflict between Islamic fundamentalism and Western liberalism, as annotated on "Sweet Bird Of Truth" and "Armageddon Days", has only increased in relevance in this post-September 11 world), 45RPM is the appropriate album for those who need to vent all that righteous indignation and who frequently turn off the 10 oclock news in disgust. --Kevin Maidment

Well, the track listing says it is (I personally own the 2 CD edition, although I got it on a US print, whilst in the US) but who knows.

Worth getting even if it is the single CD in my opinion, if just for the original version of Uncertain Smile which is not exactly an easy find these days.

Surprising if you dig deep the 80s DID have some good music :-D

Yeah, Warne Livesey did some great production work on that, and I have to say I am really pleased with the sound of the remastered albums.

I guess unless someone on here says Matt Johnson was the best man at their wedding you can indeed claim a spot prize! :-D

I was barely at school in those days let alone going to gigs, sometimes being older has its advantages!

Almost missed this, hope its not gone, Superb price for a piece of the real 80's beginnings. Great find thanks OP

Great music and clever lyrics. He was WAY ahead of his time.

He absolutely nails religious fundamentalism in one of his songs.

"they've forgotten the message but worship the creed"

Awesome - been after the double CD version at a decent price for ages.

I remember them being absolutely impossible to search for on Amazon and google... the word "The" was omitted from your search :|

Cracking album this. Hawt.

Yes fantastic band - shame Matt Johnson seems to have almost completly dropped out of the music scene. I undertand he provided music for the British film Tony ( directed by 'Gerard Johnson' - relative maybe ?) but aside from that there has been nothing for years. Though he always used to take an age between albums anyway.

It shows a 2 CD version along with the tracklist, however I cannot guarantee that they will send the 2 CD version, I certainly know websites have been wrong before. :)

I'll send it back then!

Also, to Chamois, Jools Holland is absent from this version of Uncertain Smile.

he's started doing monthly podcasts on www.thethe.com and the tony soundtrack is getting released too. gerard johnson made a short film before tony and the the did the music to that too. tony is an interesting film and worth a watch, but the music is just instrumental stuff like has been on some of the b sides. in fact there's pretty much just one track that resembles music, the rest is pretty much atmospheric sounds, like accompany tv shows like heroes (by wendy & lisa) etc

matt was dissapointed that after falling out with sony for not releasing gun ***** and moving to an indie label, he ended up being ripped off and disappointed with the indie business, so i presume this removed his enthusiasm to make more albums. i don't think the name "the the" helps in the current age, as you can't easily google up or find him, you have to search for matt johnson instead

i've been a fan for a long time, and have all the original early 12"s, and i bought a cd recorder in the early to mid 90s to put the 12"s onto. not all the vinly stuff is on the compilation, but some of the best and rarest stuff, and having the 7" versions of some of the stuff on the first disc is also great, as some of the soul mining singles were completely rerecorded for the album

andy dog the artist? didn't he die in an accident a few years back or something? i loved his artwork, especially the paintings on cars and stuff in the infected video. i also have two copies of the banned infected 12" sleeve with the masturbating devil, and i had one of the early t shirts of that, but unlike the later versions you didn't see the dangly bits
#27
Can anyone who owns this confirm whether its a worthy purchase for an owner of soul mining, mind bomb and infected?

Most tracks in this are covered in these 3 albums.......just wondered if the tracks are much different on this?
#28
yay another fan from back in the day went to see him/them a few times in concert "back then" Johnny Marr on guitar

his lyrics still relevant today Soul Mining one of my favourite all time albums, Ive got lots of their "Limited edition" stuff also

He is alive I understand, living in Essex/Suffolk, still working as an Artist, he was in a band called Camera 3, I knew the guitarist, mmmmmmmmm 30 years ago:w00t:

The Soul Mining singles were slightly different versions to the album version ( as mentioned elsewhere the single version of Uncertain Smile does not have the Jools Holland piano ending) but there are also tracks on this CD from the other The The albums, in particular Dusk. In addition there are two new tracks and for money one of them, Pillar Box Red, is as good, honest and hearfelt as any of mid-eighties greats such as Heartland.

Ta for the reply.

I had missed it off, but i own dusk also!

Just had a listen on Amazon to this compilation, and i think ill stick with the 4 albums I have as theres not much new here, and i prefer the album versions to the short clips of 'originals' heard.

on the second disc you have some great 12"s. it's worth £4 for that alone. now that i'm reminded that soul mining was nearly 30 years ago, it might put it into perspective when i say i paid about £25 to £30 for some of the soul mining 12"s in the late 80s, so to have the best of the bunch in great (matt johnson approved) remastered sound on cd, is a bargain. you don't have much to lose at £4 a pop

i saw them a couple of times with johnny marr. once was the jingle hells tour at the glasgow barrowlands. johnny wasn't part of the band during that tour, but he turned up as special guest to play on a few tracks. i think i have the bootlegs of all the glasgow gigs i was at. the first of which was back in 1988 i think, the the vs the world tour

i remember reading something a good few years back (maybe 10 years?) about matt saying his brother had died. i don't know how many brothers he had. maybe he had a few, and gerard (the film maker) is one of them, andy dog (the artist) another, and the one that died

when was it you met andy?

i also vaguely remember that the artwork for nakedself wasn't by andy, but all the previous artwork was by him, thus pointing to his death. i might be completely wrong however

If I recall Matt had a brother called Eugene who passed away and the album Dusk was dedicated to him ( will have to check when I get home). If you listen to songs like 'Love is stronger than death' then the emotions of that event really come through and seem to be all about him losing his brother.

As posted before. it was Eugene that died, not Andy. Matt Johnson has to be one of the best and articulate lyricists around. Criminally underrated and ignored. A national treasure.

hot! have all their albums already so won't buy (unless those previously unreleased songs are really worth it?), but looks a great set for those new to this awesome if under rated band.

It was Andy Dog (Johnson) I met him a couple of times through a mutual friend (where are you Graham?) around 1980. I recall he lived in Loughton and his family ran a pub in Stratford?

Matt Johnson is one of my all time heros'. I just love his lyrics; so full of emotion and angst, tinged with a certain sadness.

Buy the album and feel it for real.
