£240 for a graphics card though bloody hell
this must be the bees knees!

Depends how you look at it, 2.4 Terra Flops is alot of processing power and using it with stuff like folding at home would mean you do some serious number crunching fast. Gaming terms it is the best ATI offering and currently one of the best performers and in price to( compared to nvidia high range, not lower). This will play all games maxed and is best used at the max resolutions of 2560x1900 to really let the beast shine (along with good parts on rest of system).

I agree £240 is a lot, i spent £150 on an 8800GTS (512mb/g92) and that was a crap load for me and i then won a competiton (at hexus!) and got a 9800GTX which is similar to my previous card but now flogged the gts and thinking about changing to an ati 4770 as its really low power but good performance. Over the next few months we shall see the price fall and the new 5000 series from ati along with the g300 series from nvidia which both sound like they will do very well.

Heat is (should be) dictated by it's price compared to the same item at other places. Not whether you think it's good value compared to your food bill.

It costs this much because it's essentially two 4870 1Gb cards squished into one. So, lots of performance = lots of £££ :)

so would there be much point putting these in a cross fire configuration?

Whilst I agree, it's horses for courses isn't it? And people have differing priorities in life :)

Hi, I don't think you can... this card has already 2 ati cores in crossfire.
Cheers :D
suspended#14
They can, it can be put in quad fire. The cores are on a single PCB which allows a single slot design (3rd party/not standard) which will make it even easier but normally they take up 2 slots the cooler so make sure you have space and a compatible mobo!

I don't know, or care, whether a breast pump is a good deal at whatever price hence wouldn't vote on it, so if somebody doesn't know or care whether this is a good 'deal' or not then it stands to reason...

possibly one of the hottest graphics card deals i've seen for a while. if only i needed a new one
#18
Great deal but you would need a fantastic PC to get anywhere near the most out of it.

Hot for price of course though.
#19
An 8800gt will play any game just fine. Why go overboard? Trying to compensate for something? :D
#20
Great price but Scan a better etailer than ocuk? ...... you musn't have had anthing go wrong with a purchase from Scan then, coz their returns handling was abysmal last time I had to use it (unlike ocuk)
#21
In terms of double precision performance, the 4870X2 is the best single slot solution out there.

This is currently one of two cards used by people trying to break benchmark world records.

You can put three of these in CrossFireX solution if that is your wish; personally they blaze through my simulations at an alarming speed. The support for four in the K9A2 or Foxconn Destroyer is flaky.

For gaming, one would be sufficient.

But just so you know, 2 months ago, this card was 350GBP. Heck, last week it was 270. The current trend is DOWN, and most of us watching prices of these components believe we haven't hit the bottom yet. Personally, I'd hold your squids for another few weeks.

Not for me - at 2048x1152 - thank-you-very-much :)

It's all about resolution - and for high-res gaming you'll struggle big time with a 8800GT. My 280 copes with everything at the above but i doubt it would on 30" monitors.

Of note - crossfire (like SLI) needs drivers for the specific game to benefit (otherwise only one card [or in this case one of the two GPUs on the card] will be user) so the gains aren't always linear or automatic. Good card though - great price too - my 280 cost me that when new.

That's a "me too" here - ocuk suck in my experience.

Remember to remove the "ScanSure" product which is automatically added to your basket and increases the price
#26
Nice price ... but I rather pay the additional £5 and pick it up from Novatech. I'm going to swap my 4890 and add the extra for this, always wanted one of these!
#27
Anyone know how this card is noisewise?
#28
It's now on Scan at £238.04 (Today Only)

Thanks anti, i edited the post.

I have one of these and i'm well impressed with it. I paid £360 when it was released so this is a bargain.
Just make sure you have the correct power supply (you need a 6 pin and an 8 pin connector from your PSU) and big enough case to fit it in.

Heat added!

Hey John. I got this from the above link.

At idle you'll hardly hear the card, the FAN RPM is pretty low and results in an overall DBA level of less than 40, which is actually great. The minute though the GPUs start to heat up, the RPM of the fan will increase and you can expect roughly 43-44 DBa when the GPU is fully stressed for both cards.

Which isn't to bad actually.

Does anyone think this would be a wise upgrade from 9800gtx in sli, I know its not a massive improvement but i was thinking more about better performance in poor sli-coded games. Or.. am I just looking for an excuse to buy it, I'm leaning towards the latter

Unless your planning on making toy story 2 may as well buy a ps3 for that price::p

This is incredibly tempting I must say, but then I'll buy it & won't use it - just like I did with my previous GPU purchase
