8gb version is £99. However, they have a slot for expanding the memory using Secure Digital cards. This slot accepts the new SDHC cards. Play also have these for £14.99 (4GB):

I have the 16GB version of this and it's a brilliant bit of kit.

Syncing is quick, easy and can be done direct from Windows Media Player. Out of the box DivX/XviD support is an ace feature for anyone who downloads videos from the torrents (though you do need to use the ultra-easy Creative Video Converter software, which is bundled, to downscale the resolution). Sound quality is brilliant (provided you BYO headphones because the bundled ones are junk). Battery life is reasonable (better than Apple, not as good as Sony). Screen is a joy.

However! Do not buy this thinking you can just stick an SDHC card in and double/quadruple/whatever the capacity. Yes, you can store extra stuff on the SD card and yes the Zen will play it, but indexing software will not add what's on the SD card to the media libraries, so it's not a great user experience. Also, playing from the SD card seems to use more battery, I found.

So basically, if 4GB is enough for your music and you're happy to use the SD card to store vids, brilliant. If you need more than 4GB for your music, buy the 8/16GB version. Also, bear in mind Microsoft are imminently(ish) releasing a 16GB flash Zune, which is just yummy.

The 8gb version is actually £95 at play.com with the £5 code - 4% quidco. Was going to post yesterday but didnt have time. Also, worth noting is the fact that the add-on memory is not regarded by the software as part of the player so some features dont work with the extra mem.

Great price as cheapest was £115 ish a couple of weeks back! Great player too from what Ive seen!

same price at amazon

Cracking deal.....I posted the Amazon one about 45 mins ago completely forgetting about Quidco (although I trust Amazon a bit more than Play)
This is a brilliant player and one is on its way to me now.

This looks good. However, the Creative website is not very informative, so does anybody know if:

1. You can plug an external microphone into this?

2. You could use this without installing any PC software, i.e. simple drag and drop?

Thanks

I was all ready to buy the 16gb version of this until i read this. I got it confirmed on another forum too. I have no idea why you have to downscale the videos to 320 x 240. My old Archos with a 2.2" screen had a screen resolution of 220 x 176 but would play 512 x 384 perfectly.

Really dont want to have to re-encode everything just so i can watch it on the Zen.

Rumour has it they might be releasing firmware to make the sd card work with the internal memory. If so it would make this an even better player. Prices are brilliant for such a good quality player, perfect for xmas :santa:

"Our friends, GenerationMP3 have gotten word that a new firmware is coming by the end of the year to "improve the functionality of the SD-slot". "

You dont actually really need a mic - i tried it out today - its very sensitive and can pick up almost anything.
#23
LOL, everybody must have been using the £5 off voucher so play have added a fiver to the price :whistling:
#24
its 64.99 at amazon? I guess that was yesterday cause it seems to be 74.99 now unfortunately.

I've heard alot of horror stories about this player, constant freezing and generally breaking alot. I was going to buy one but that sort of thing put me off, has anyone else experienced such things?

I got my zen have had it for a week anyone who brought it from amazon in the last 30 days call them and they will refund the difference for the drop in price. I brought a Toshiba 4gb SD card for £14 on ebay.
#29
anyone interested in this priced at £60 in pcworld the other day.
whether they had any stock is another question

also anyone getting one of these you might want to buy some sort of protection for the screen.
its so easy to mark, ive ordered the clear acrylic case.

I brought a Toshiba 4gb SD card for £14 on ebay

can you confirm it works ok with the ZEN? also do you have a link?

the creative website has a compatibility list for sd cards but it isnt very long. id rather not risk buying something that doesnt work

is it possible you are mistaking this zen model with the "zen v", they are completely different units. @ pcworld and currys, they have the 4gb "zen v" priced @ £59.99
#31
i dont think so, it was definatly the zen, i have one so knew it was the same.
the label next to it said zen 4gb £60.
i might be near there tomorrow, ill pop in and take a piccy :)
