Been looking for something like for ages for my little brothers.

While there isnt any money off i've seen this kind of thing searched for all over the place. It certainly appears to me to be the cheapest way of getting full surround sound from one of the latest generation of consoles as it has the holy grail, an optical input.

For under a hundred notes it's not going to be amazing quality but if you want to hear those rockets whizz past your head or the rain dropping all around you while gaming then i reckon this deal seems alright.

Here's a few reviews/comments:

http://www.ciao.co.uk/Acoustic_Solutions_DS534__Review_5760525

if you do go with this then remember no optical cable is included in the box so you'll need one too.

it does only has 1 optical input but if you require more you can get something like this:

Makes all the differance in DTS surround for the 360. Havent heard them, but good price.
#2
interestingly, these are £72 delivered on our favourite auction site, although grade a stock (returns, possibly as new condition, everything present)
#3
5.1 optical out is definitely the way to go!
I bought a set (not these) for £199 way back in 2000. And they are still going perfectly. They have seen action from PC/PS1/PS3/HTPC - so think of them as a 'sound' investment. *boom boom*

To be honest you could probably pick up a 2nd hand AV amp and speakers for about that much if you look carefully and it would blow these out of the water.
#5
These are rubbish. I used them for a week and there was no way I was keeping them.
#6
These are rubbish really. If your spending £100, might aswell spend £150 and get decent new stuff that can be upgraded at a later stage if need be. http://www.richersounds.com/information.php?cda=static&cst=homecinemasystems

voted cold, not worth £100 IMO

they're not supposed to be high quality, that richer sounds setup looks good but its easy to say "spend %50 more and get something better" for most everything.

my little brothers got a ps3 for xmas, they're still at school and have not much cash. £100 is a lot for them, £150 is a lot more.

To get people into 5.1 i think this is alright and people upgrading from TV speaker sound will think they've just bought a cinema when they crank their blade runner bluray for the first time :-)

I got a 8 year old 2nd hand amp + speakers from avforums that do blow these out of the water but they were £160.

rear speakers on stands is always good too!
#9
or go for the sony dz260 dvd player, upscaler, usb player, and surround sound from amazon for £130 - brilliant piece of kit!
#10
Pretty **** tp be honest. No Preset on Active Sub, You have to readjust sound each time you play film. Voted Cold. Spend more and get an Av amp then you can start to upgrade
#11
100 watts? that is really weak for a theatre system
#12
p.s. no point having an optical input if the sound coming out is weak.
#13
Having had this set-up and giving it up for a yamaha set-up in december, the sound is OK (yes, I can tell a huge difference in my new ones, but they were twice the price), but the thing that I really found lacking was the connectors for the speakers...so flimsy.

I won't vote cold because if £100's your limit and you're buying new, It's still a good deal but search around a little and I reckon you wouldn't have to spend much more to get a fair upgrade.

I only have a small one bedroom place meaning my living room is not much bigger than a bedroom, and was thinking something like this would be ideal, I dont want to spend a fortune on a sound set up - £100 would be my limit. Baring in mind I get on with my neighbours, it would not be my intention to want to have this blasting out at silly loud volumes, just surround sound would be nice.

Simply put, I know alot of you guys and girls really know your stuff when it comes to audio, but for someone who just wants better than the flat sound my lcd provides, I would be using the ps3 as my blu-ray player, would this be a nice cheap introduction to 5.1 surrond sound?

I have this reserved for pick up at my local argos, so there is a convience factor to consider also (i.e could have it tonight rather than a collect from sorting office miles away in a week if I buy from internet).

I really do not want spend more than £100, as I want to eventually get a higher quality plasma or lcd and an extra £60 - £100 I think would be better spent ensuring I have a better picture over sound.

any advice would be most appreciated.

well, the reason I didn't vote cold is because it's fine for £100.

You'll think the sound quality is perfectly decent and it will be until you hear something else for more money, but you could apply that to most logics.

If you are not an audiophile, then these are perfect and the price is great.. and 100w is more than enough.

I've got this set, and the PS3, DVD, Blu-Ray, Wii and Freeview all sound fantastic through..

I've had one amp go wrong, but I took it back to Argos and they just replaced it.. sorted

the only complaint I have about it, it that you could be watching a film, and the music will be really loud and then the speech will be quiet, so you have to keep adjusting accordingly.. but after a while you just get use to it.

I rate this hot..

I started out with a set a bit like this, i'd say this is a good price and for a first surround sound system. However buy cheap, buy twice as they say. A fairly good setup will set you back £300-400, so for the money this isn't too bad.

The centre speaker is the speaker that handles most of the vocals, this is usually the weak part on budget systems.

Great for the kids bedroom but otherwise pretty tame. Not a good example for showing your A/V setup off. Won't vote cold coz it's less than 100 smackers complete.

Sorry to act dumb but does anyone know if there is a WIRE LESS Surround sound system?
My wife to be wont let me have surround sound because of all the wires

There's this one which has wireless rear speakers. Saves a bit on the clutter.

You'd be better off getting a decent 2.1 system, it will sound better... do you really need the rear speakers? IF the quality is that bad, you'd benefit from clearer sounds up front rather than muffled sounds all round. You get what you pay for, its just not advisable to go for these.

Can you suggest any 2.1 systems for a similiar price to use with the 360 please?

Thanks

i bought one of these from ebay for 50.00 only wanted it for my ps3 i havea smallish square living room and it works great i wouldnt play the ps3 without surround sound now really takes it to a new level,i agree that it wont compare to the more expensive surround kits but do u want to be really spend 500 quid plus? i only wanted sumthing cheap for ps3 and was madeup with this my friend bought it too afta hearing mine, playing metal gear solid 4 thru it is awesome, pretty good for playing ur dvds thru too,ud be hard pressed to find another system for this price that has an optical input Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and dts i tried and couldnt find one anywhere to match those specs for a hundred quid

i got a set of these from a well known auction site as graded stock. obviously not top notch audio, but still better than watching it on your tv alone. If you dont have much to spend these should do you fine
#27
Thanks for the opinons - decided to buy these in the end, and after a short time placing speakers and cable hiding, I was up and running.

I am very impressed considering the low cost, sounds a hell of alot better than just having my tele speakers, and will happily suffice until I am able to move into a larger house (if ever!!!!).

Cheers everyone.

I have my PS3 going through it using the Optical.. I then have my Freeview Connected to my TV using Scart and to the amp using Stereo RCA leads.. and even if the freeview isn't on the TV still comes through the amp, albeit in passive surround.

That's the way I do it.
