Got an e-mail from GNER this morning.

They are selling £5 one way tickets anywhere on their route.

Only on sale from 29 October to 4 November (for travel until 27 January).

Just had a look and there are plenty.

excellent, got me some seats in January (flying from London City so this has made getting to London a lot cheaper)

Shame I have to wait until 1st November to buy my return ticket:
"Please note that when the offer starts, tickets will be available for travel up to and including Friday 18 January. On 1 November, tickets for travel to Sunday 27 January will go on sale."

Cheers looks good voted hot.

voted hot but im gutted because i have a nights stay at the hoxton for £1 (as on the forum weeks ago) and the trainline is down at the weekend so i cant get back for £5, cheapest single is £80 and involves a bus!

I can't get this to work. I just search normally following the link and I don't get the option of any £5 tickets, the cheapest I can get is £9.50.

Any help?

Try the link further down the GNER page...were it says how to book...
i tried a route,but no joy,but then tried Glasgow to Newcastle 3rd Jan,it worked.....
so maybe it's the route,as it needs to be the routes GNER run :)

what days did you book and what's your to/from? Check the dates are available (the link states some days unavailable for booking @ £5 until the 1st November) and that your travelling only on the GNER route

I've sorted it, I booked too earlier, silly me.

Great deal, voted hot.

Does anybody know of any places where you can get cheap accomodation for early december which is near a GNER train station?
Can see a cheap break coming here!

I stay in london due to work and they always put me up in a travel lodge.
They are simple rooms but well priced and most of them are very close to the tube so you have access to all the sights etc.
You will arrive at londons kings cross on the GNER train so take a look at what is available around that area. I know there is a travel lodge about 2 mins away from Kings Cross as i stayed there last week. The tube is also next to the main Kings Cross station.

I hope this helps :)

I struggled to find £5 tickets initially but then tried their new site which is currently in pilot but available for public use (been mentioned on here elsewhere).

http://tickets.gner.co.uk/gner/en/JourneyPlanning/GnerWebTISHomePage

It has a lowest fare finder in the bottom left hand corner (after initial data capture screen) which takes most of the effort out of this. Much better than the interface on the current site.

I've just booked a weekend in Edinburgh. Voted hot.

I might be wrong, but the unique 'Promo ID' "MALLARD225" seems to be used in the URL for the trains...

http://www.gnertickets.co.uk/Buy_Tickets/matrix/display_ticket_terms.asp?ticket_type=3PS&coded_promo=MALLARD225

taken from here ^

So this might only apply to the GNER mallard trains, of which the timetables are here:

Northbound
Southbound

Again, I could be completely wrong but I just happened to notice that when looking for trains myself. It might save someone time if their desired route isn't on a Mallard train!

Though, feel free to ignore this and tell me otherwise if you can prove me wrong! :D

i've never been to london before and this is the perfect chance... £10 return from Newcastle!

just wondering if anyone can tell me, if i get off the train at kings cross, we want to go to the london dungeons (we have free entry, haha)... is it fairly close? and is 7-hours enough to get there and back, and to see a coupe of sites?

This offer is only avaialble between statiosn that GNER trains run. So if you're local station is not a GNER one it might be cheaper to get a separate local ticket and then get the £5 ticket just between GNER's stations.

The main stations are:

London Kings Cross
Stevanage
Peterborough
Grantham
Newark
Retford
Doncaster
Wakefield Westgate
Leeds (you can't travel from Leeds and Wakefield north, just south)
York
Northallerton
Darlington
Durham
Newcastle
Berwick
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Aberdeen
Inverness

There's lots of small stations north of Edinburgh as well (Aviemore?)

This explains my post on the other GNER thread yesterday about free first class tickets

You would not be able to get the Train to/from Reading using his deal, as thi is not operated by GNER, but it might be worth trying to get some £5 tickets to from Newcastle form Kings X

Saying that I have tried to get tickets from Newcastle to London for a surprise trip for the Mr's....... no luck

In a word - no
The train from Newcastle to London is about 3 hours - now 7 hours in London is another matter.

The London Dungeon is underneath London Bridge Station - you can reach London Bridge Station from Kings Cross via the Northern Line Underground (12 mins running time according to the TFL website). But beware - unless you have a London Oyster Card (which you have to pay for) the cost will cripple you - with the card £1.50 each way, without it £4 !!!!
Although it will take longer you'd be better off taking the bus - a one day bus pass will cost £3.50.

If you're thinking of coming to London, check out the Transport for London (TFL) website - it'll tell you everything you want to know about getting around the City.

Here is the link : www.tfl.gov.uk

I hope that you make down to us in the smoke and I trust that you'll have a memorable day with us, as I'm sure I'm going to when I take advantage of these cheap fares and go to Newcastle in December (MetroCentre here I come !!!)

If it's of any use - it's possible to go from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly via Virgin Trains during the week from £1 each way. (Details on the Virgintrains website)

I've already taken advantage of the offer and will be doing so again in the near future.

As an alternative, and if you fancy possibly a long ride, both National Express and Megabus go to Manchester from £1 each way.

Depends on where you are setting off from.

If its North then try and get GNER train that stops in Leeds then get a day return from Leeds.

If its South then try Doncaster if and then see how much from Doncaster to Manchester.

You may well be right - I looked on the TFL website but didn't see that option (I'm an old chap and get free travel so have no need to worry about getting around)

I didn't want anyone to come to London and find themselves being charged an 'arm and a leg' to get around the place so thought that I'd flag up the problem.

Even at £6 for a travel card, a one day bus pass is by far better value, plus of course things can be seen from the top of a bus that obviously can't be seen underground, and they're not effected by 'planned engineering works' - lol
