No. It's more like launching it.
#7
Pleople who launch these should put their name & address on them so the councils know where to send the fixed penalty litter fines.
#8
Quick, buy loads, these ones with wire in may be banned soon..........and about the crop burning.........my local farmer burns his stubble,so,get over it.
#9
Just curious.

Are all the people annoyed about the littering aspect also suggesting we should have no flying fireworks either?
#10
Yes, this is like floating litter in the sky. Where is lands miles away. Fireworks have a much shorter range and are more socially acceptable because most people launch them on the same day.

Drunken numpties launch these awful products on a daily basis with no thought of the consequences to other people, property or animals. They are one of the worst products ever invented. Like the Crazy Frog ringtone.

Even better for killing livestock!

The wire in these things is deadly if it lands on land used for hay/silage. The wire gets cut into small pieces by the machinery that cuts the hay and is in turn fed to livestock and can perforate the animals intestines.
This is not speculation; this was a subject discussed on 'Farming Today' back in March. Farmers want the non-biodegradable ones to be discontinued by the suppliers, but as they have not been responsive (or responsible) to this request, they now want an outright ban.
The sooner, the better in my opinion.
Typical 21st century selfishness by people who do not accept responsibility for their actions.

I have been trying to decide if these are a good idea or not for ages, I finally relented last night and got my daughter some for her birthday camp out. They were made of very thin tissue which I am sure will degrade very quickly. Apart from that they just had a circle of very thin wood at the bottom and string across the opening with the little parcel to burn. I don't think these would take long to degrade. I also struggle to see that they could cause any harm to animals. In the end we only let one off because it was too windy, the second one we tried to light kept getting deflated by the wind and eventually burnt itself out before it had a chance to take off. my main concern would be that they would land on something and set it on fire but as someone else has pointed out they do not come down until the fire is out, unless they hit an obstacle or something.

I did read that article, but as I said the lanterns that I bought did not have any wire, only biodegradable string that is why I could not see how the ones that I bought could cause harm, I can clearly see if they have sharp metal in that would be a problem.

TO BE FAIR.... (cough.. cough).. I mean to be fair the farm animals we have after many years of selective breeding etc have very little in common with the wild animals that roamed the hills and valleys of ancient Britain.

to be fair, what has keeping animals in a barn got to do with flying lanterns lol

What has this got to do with the danger of chopped wire in the feed stuff?

Cattle are housed in barns in the winter, but on pasture in the summer. In the winter they are fed on hay and silage, which is where the danger is with these lanterns.

The farmers can take much better care if the feed is not contaminated with litter.

Anyway, there is no need to SHOUT (you can turn off the caps lock).
