Anything they sell.....

At the end of the day if your car is mint you are ok but you are likely to get more failures and more advisories than the average independent garage.....IMHO and from limited experience.

did this last month and used them

, here was my findings at that time...
Had mine done last week following the above, they failed it on beam of headlamps to high on both left and right side and charged £13.99 + vat to fix it.

They didnt notify me before fixing it (ok only minor) but I couldnt check it till it had been fixed (limited time on the ramp for each car and alternative was to fail and charge a full retest fee next day). still cost me less than usual full fee so cant complain too much

ALSO i noticied its recognised my car and not showing the new reduced price and charging more for services too so if youve looked before clear your cookies or another browser to see the price

Just had my car MOTed and that was only £40 at a local garage so if this is half price that means they are charging £55 normally for a MOT by the monkeys.

The current price of an MOT for a car as set by the government is £54.85.

Not sure how places manage to do it for less, unless they're making a loss initially and expecting to be able to make up for that in potential repair costs ( - not that I'm implying that's what your garage has done)..... Unless your car is a 3-wheeler - in which case it'd only be £37.80! (_;)

Halfords and Nationwide auto centres, I wouldn't go anywhere near them. They are both a bunch of money grabbing ****.

Nothing wrong with the misses car when I went to get it MOT'd (I checked it over myself) by they still seemed find things wrong with it. The very last time i took to them they tried the old "your brake discs are getting very thin and need to be replaced" trick. which surprise me seeing as they were changed 2 months before.

I recently bought a second hand car with full service history the mots were carried out at nationwide service centre chester, some of the advisories are hilarious, and most are laughable.
#12
I took my fiesta in for a service and my high level brake light wasnt working. They said that you couldnt replace the bulb and that i needed a new complete unit which would cost about £65.00! I understandably said no. After searching google for 30 minutes when i got home, i found out what type of bulb the unit took, ordered one, and fitted it myself. Total cost £1.80!!!!!

They also told me my steering rack was about to fail and that i should seriously consider letting them replace it. Thats strange i thought, 6 months before i bought the car, it had a brand new steering rack fitted, and i have the receipt to prove it!

AVOID! Taunton branch

Never in a million years would I reccomened this place.

My husband took this offer up after he was made redundant to save money. The car being well looked after always flew through it's MOT. They failed it on several things, and you won't believe this but I swear it to be true, the one thing it failed on ... a mini banner he had hanging on his rear view mirror, it was bigger than the 'size permitted' guidelines.
I won't repeat what he said to the manager.

He took it to his regular centre and it passed with flying colours.
Cold, cold, cold from me.

To be fair i have been using them for years, i use the Lincoln Tritton Road branch , never tried another branch, maybe they are one of the good guys
#15
My brother in law works for Halfords (and when it used to be Nationwide) so obviously get a good service for really cheap. Lots of places pretend there's something wrong, not just here. My dad nearly got ripped off from Mr. Clutch. It just depends on your local branch.

That's the maximum they can charge: "Note: the fees shown are the maximum fees and they are not subject to VAT."

Actually you arent allowed things hanging from your rearviewmirror, they were correct to fail it for that. But it wouldnt cost anything to fix that so why did he take it somewhere else?

Have to agree that Halfords really should be avoided - took my wife's car to to the Worcester branch as it was the only local place approved by her AA extended warranty cover (which incidently is a complete waste of money!) and it seriously came out worse than it went in - and they also tried to charge me double the cost for the same repair at the approved dealer!
#19
took two cars for MOT at halfords last month no problems with them both cars passed halfords never tried to push any other parts or service found the half price offer on google great price for me
#20
I always use an MOT specialist place which only does MOTs and is not a garage and doesn't do repairs. In Wycombe I use Motstop. Just feels more reassuring that way, as there is nothing in it for them if the car fails.
#21
Avoid Keighley branch, internet reservations for MOT are not entered in their diary for correct day, no apology even though I had a print out!
Vehicle then failed, took it to Vauxhall main dealer vehicle passed!
Never again will I trust them

The truth. They'll find a bunch of unnecessary extra jobs that need doing, from replacement bulbs to a cam belt change.

Actually he said they were allowed but the one in the car was outside the allowed size. You think he would have removed it and warned my husband instead of adding it as a fail item ?
As I already said, they failed it on several things, it shouldn't have failed, he would have had to sort those out before he got a pass from them.
Re-read my last post to answer your question.

Took my daughters car to Plymouth branch and left it. Had a call to say the oil level was a bit low so they couldnt do the emmisions ckeck unless they topped it up. I know for a fact it was ok but agreed as they said other than that it was ok. They charged me an extra £9.80 for toil i didnt need and when i ckecked the time of emmision test it was done an hour before they called me.!!
Agree with comments and would avoid. Protyre do mot's and i trust them to be honest.

I hope you pointed this out to them and asked for a refund.

I have mine booked in on Friday, I'm going to make sure the oil etc is fine before hand.

Bunch of cowboys. They always bump up price with unecessary parts. Always charge for new wiperblades at MOT time. Best avoided.
#28
Have to say I have used them twice with 2 different cars (1 fairly new & 1 10yrs old) both passed fine with no extra charges or advisories
#29
But you dont have to get them to fix anything they find wrong, you can say you will fix it yourself, the retest is free.

if you take it away from a branch a tester an charge full retest fee, its generally only the places that charge the maximum fee that offer free retest within 24 hours if you take it away.

They failed mine, see above post, and fixed it without telling me as was minor, and said alternative was to fail it and charge full retest as each car only has a fixed amount of time on the ramp and that was the last test he did....

Mine passed today at Halfords, £27.42 for a 10 year old Peugeot 306. :)

I have found a descent garage now that charges £40 for MOT if it fails they will phone you up to say what is wrong with it and ask if you would like it done or you can take it away and repair it yourself. and the re-test is free. the garage is in the Blackpool / St.Annes area if anybody needs to know PM me.

The link to this site only offeers £10 off but if you use code HP-MOT it checks-out at 50% off. (5.5% quidco too)

I've been using the Hendon branch for the last 5 years and never had a problem, my cars are now 10 & 16 years old so if they wanted to fail them I'm sure they could find something.

It's all too easy to generalise on MOT rip off's, it's not down to the company but the individual tester and manager so if you find a good one stick with them.
