LIDL!!!!!!!!!!!!! - is that a bigger shop than a normal Lidl ? ;-)
#3
That is an amazing deal.... i'm sick of paying £4 for 2 punnets in asda and they're all mouldy at the bottom. My kids are mad on strawberries and we're on a budget so thanks.

Am sure UK strawberries should be cheap this season, warm weather this year has made for a bumper crop I heard somewhere.

Too true - that's why these are cheap. Nobody wants tasteless Spanish strawberries when the English ones are so much better, and in good supply.

Lidl know they'll be stuck with these unless they shift them quick.

Were you watching? (_;)

They were 99p about 4 weeks ago too. They are too soft but great for making jam which I did this morning with 2 packs :)

LIDL is bigger on the inside. Time lord technology...
#19
Noticed Aldi had strawberries on offer today but like Lidl they were a bit on the soft side. Think I will wait a couple of weeks for mine to be ready...

Hope they're better than the last time I saw strawberies at Lidl.
They looked pretty awful.

Didn't you have a pot of cream then? Quick, someone post a deal on cheap cream!:p

As someone pointed out, there's always a reason why they're cheap so why all the excitement from a few of you ? I lived in Spain for a while and there weren't many nice strawberries at all....mostly large tasteless forced ones.
Better to wait for home grown i.e. uk produced.

No need to wait - there are loads of excellent English strawberries around right now. Slightly more expensive, but not that much more, than these horrible Spanish ones.

Use these for jam, by all means, but for God's sake, forget the idea of actually eating Spanish strawberries as they are. oO

Don't really get the obsession with English and hatred of Spanish strawberries (it's borderline xenophobia). The problem is the variety (not their nationality); avoid Elsanta which the supermarkets like because they're not easily damaged. Unfortunately they're rock hard and taste like turnip. Elsanta are widely grown in England and no matter how much flag-waving you do they still taste awful.
#29
Buying English Strawberries from the supermarket does not guarantee taste or quality, bought some Spanish from Morrisons £1 for 300gm and some of the best i have had, bought some English ones and they were horrible.

The best strawberries you can get are pick you own and not to go to the supermarket

Nothing to do with variety and xenophobia, I'm afraid - but everything to do with the climate in which they're grown. Much like the difference between English aparagus and, say, Peruvian.

Elsanta certainly isn't the best of strawberries (though the supermarkets love it) but there's a world of difference between an English one and a Spanish one. They taste completely different.

A lot of our produce may be nothing special, but when it comes to strawberries (and asparagus) nothing compares with English.
#31
my family come from strawberry growing areas of the UK
thanks to the mild weather there has been a glut of strawberries

so they are going to start to rush to get rid of them
expect all supermarkets to have cheap strawberry deals or BOGOF BOG2F

and is there is such a bumper harvest, the shelf life is poor, so watch our for mouldy and bruised fruit.

as for the variety; elsata are almost 90% of the market as they grow well in poly tunnels and travel and store well.

batches of them are bit tasteless
#32
I don't think a few strawberries justify that many exclamation marks.

Hot for this deal, although there's now a world shortage of exclamation marks as they were all used up on this deal. I was just about to write a letter to my M.P. complaining about how the Conservatives are about to ruin the N.H.S. and sadly I can't now as I wanted to use plenty of exclamation marks. Imagine if the Conservatives had put cuts on exclamations marks, that would have everyone's hands tied behind their backs and I dare say Hotukdeals would cease to be.

cold...if you're not fussed about that taste that these strawberries haven't got - than it's a deal for you...
