Just so you know - This Product is Refurbished...

I didn't even know you could get portable NAS drives!!
#3
It's not portable, it's just mini (2.5" HDD). It must be connected to the mains. A portable NAS would be a bit pointless too but you can access it remotely through the web. No internal expansion for additional HDD makes it a bit lame but it's a great price even only to run an iTunes server or stream some media around your house!

It is portable, you use it as a nas then you can disconnect and usa VIA USB on the move..

It's not 'portable' as it has to be powered via 5V 3A charger constantly ! No running via USB power.

No USB slave interface, only USB host for an extra drive / printer.

You can only connect via Ethernet. Drives can be setup as 500GB RAID 0 or 250GB RAID 1.

Itunes server, print server, backup functions, expandable via USB, Twonkymedia server for streaming, SMB shares etc. all good NAS functions, you decide ;)

The small size seems to be somewhat irrelevant, however a NAS with USB, that you can connect to a USB hub, with 2 X 250GB 2.5in drives, is a bargain. Only downside is that the disks don't spin down with the stock firmware. I just wished I needed one.

How many watts does this suck down in use? Wonder if I could pop 2 640 gig samsung drives in it.

cheers for that bit of info, do you have a link to a firmware that solves that issue?
#14
tempting but its a refurb and need mains power.
#15
Does anyone own one of these? It sounds like a good deal to me. It would cost you almost £60 for 2x250GB HDDs. 60% less power consuption sounds like a good thing too. 40W on 24/7 is going to be expensive. I wanted to know if anyone owned one because it looks as if you need software intalled on your PC for the drive to spin down automatically. Is this software pretty bloated or just a small backgroud process? Has anyone installed debian on it or on another NAS? What benefit would this give you? I am new to the world of NAS!

theres a few firmwares around, you can also telnet into it. I think hdparm -S 50 /dev/sda should work.

Exceptionally cheap given 500GB 2.5" hard drives are normally arround the £50 mark so a 500GB 2.5" NAS for £59.99 is a bargain! Might be worth mentioning the fact its a Buffalo Linkstation in title though.

Thanks for this. Perfect for those of us with basic needs.

Speed is always an issue with [cheap/mini] NAS and NTFS.

Anyone know what the actual transfer speeds are?
#22
A lot of refurb Buffalo being sold, surely not a good sign.

NEED SOME ADVICE<

My office has very bad internet. Am i correct saying once this is powered I can simply connect other computers within range of it.

Do i have to have a internet connection to connect to it??????
#24
@4Qman - NAS devices use a network so you can access via your LAN (internal network, no need for Internet) if you connect it to your router and your PCs are connected to the same router.

Some NAS also offer connections over the WAN (this uses Internet) so you can access it from remote locations.
#25
Arr I see,

So If i have a router and one of these NAS devices I can create my own internal network for gaming/filesharing. Without internet?

Thanks for the advice its appreciated. I am just trying to make my own network in my hotel room for my friends to come in access files and game together,
#26
Yes the internet is just a type of network, you would use a LAN network rather than a WAN.

I bought the last one off ebay but now I've decided that I dont need it. If anyone wants it they can have it at the same price. I can get them to deliver it directly to you instead of me.
