Mmm. Does this not make BT Vision look good? You get ESPN free when you purchase another package

If you sign up to BT Internet and if you can get a fast enough broadband speed.

You're not connected to the internet with Top Up TV so you're not tied down

fair comment, so I'll not vote

My view is if you want top up tv then this is,nt so bad a deal, But if not, and you still want freeview , but also the tv recorder, etc..then just get the bush one from Argos, in there sale right now...for me..this is the way iv gone..did,nt want the top up + monthly payment...

Didn't top-up-tv go under a while ago?

You may be thinking of Setanta
#7
So, looking at their "TV favourites" package (£11.99 a month) - it's just a load of old repeats, or have I missed something?
#8
topup tv is pointless, you get ****** all programs that are worth it!
#9
Surely the title is wrong.............it should read 500gb freeview recorder for £146 with pathetic viewing pack

If you have Sky or Virgin, then alot of the programmes may be repeats, for those with Freeview only would not have seen the likes of Lost series 5 for example...also progs from National Geographic, CSI Channel, Sc-Fi, History channel etc

We are all entitled to an opinion, but I don't think you can get a 500Gb DTR cheaper that this.

Fair comment...................but the title is misleading............the cheapest to buy it is £146

It doesn't look like you are tied into a contract.....so all you need to do is give one months notice to cancel, which if you only sign up to PictureBox will cost just £7 more...ie, a maximum of £76
#14
£12 topcashback also
#15
Tesco or Asda cant remember which one have these for £79.97 but buy at your own peril, they is awful!
#16
If you opt for the "Picture Box" viewing pack, you are not tied in to a contract, and can give immediate 30 days notice to leave.

As the first month is free, this means you don't pay anything apart from the original £70.

If you manage to get the £12 cashback though TopCashBack, you get the box for £58.

I have just checked the cashback conditions, and there is a 2 month validation period on all sales.

You won't get the cashback if you cancel immediately. However if you provide notice after one month, you pay for one month at £7 and will then get £12 cashback.

So that's £65 for the box + two months of the "Picture Box" viewing pack

seems a bit of a rip off. picture box is only a 5er with virgin, 4.99 with bt vision. You get all that plus ESPN with vision for 7.50 for the 1st 3months then 14.99 there after - free box as well. worth it if you have phone line n bb with them i would say. Havent voted obv tho cos if u dont have a phone line then it might be worth it for you :)
#18
SKY HD all the way
#19
BBC and ITV have HD channels coming to freeview this year, I think before the World Cup for half the UK, so I expect Top Up TV want to clear their non-HD boxes so that they can stock up on HD boxes for the summer.

These units are very noisy and unreliable. I bought one from Morrisons with the smaller memory and it froze on me after 2 months got a replacement which failed after another 6 months so for me never again. It was only £60 but the quality was reflected in the price. Sounded like a hairdryer running.

Freezing from me

If you click on the 500Gb link, it says "Box may differ from the model shown."

So you don't even know what model you will get.

exactly. next push will be to get everyone to buy hd boxes. just took out sky offer, hd pic is great. i'd recommend putting the money towards an hd box, of whichever source, if you have the tv.

Some places won't get Freeview HD for another 2 years......so there's no need to be an early adopter....and in that time problems will be sorted, and prices will come down.

A warning to all people considering this offer. In my experience TV Top TV boxes are utter garbage. They crash all the time, the software is horrible to use and recordings fail as often as they succeed. Also they have alarming habit of getting stuck while recording and just carry on going until the hard disk is full. If you even look sideways at that recording the box will lock up and they take an age to delete.

One to avoid even at this price.

I've NEVER experienced that amount of problems.
The worst I have had recently (last 2 months) is a 45 minute recording from BBC1 including the buffer, so ended up over 2 hours.

I have NEVER heard them recording anything until the Hard Disk gets full.

When did you have one of these DTR's?.....as deleting progs has been sped up considerably in the last couple of updates.

Not so sure if 'BT Vision' will be looking quite so good when your 'Broadband' speed start looking like 'Dialup'
I am on the euphemistically titled 'up to 20Mb broadband' for my work, and struggle to see 3Mb! I dont live
out in the sticks either! The more people take up 'BT Vision' the more Broadband speed will suffer! I also have
VirginMedia 10Mb cable for my private use and get a solid 9.9Mb, and proper On-Demand Films and TV. There's no contest!

Wouldn't this

or this

be a better deal.
I bought the former from topuptv via pixmania a few months back. Yes its a refurb (although looked new), yes it is a tad noisy, but there is no tie in, i.e you don't need to sign up to topuptv.
So you can just configure it for the freeview channels.
Mine has not missed a beat. Recorded everything I've thrown at it. Bargain.

No, cos they are Thomson which I would have to say are the worst make I have ever come across...

cold for me, monthly fee is madness just to get a cheapo PVR half price

Errr the ops deal is based on a Thomson unit. My post was showing a cheaper Thomson alternative with no topuptv tie-in.
My Thomson unit is fine - never missed a beat. The older Thomson topuptv units wih naff firmware were pants and a lot of people got their fingers burned.
Check the forums before you slate them.
Now with the latest f/w they are rock solid, and both the prices I have posted are bargains IMHO. Less then 40quid delivered for a PVR.

I agree. You can get yourself a similar unit with no topuptv tie-in.
Would not touch Topuptv with a barge-pole. Surely got to be on its last legs. People leaving them in droves.

People have been saying that for 6 years though, and they are still here.

A recent survey sent out asked peoples opinion of whether they would subscribe to Sky Sports via Top Up TV, so I don't think they will be going anywhere too soon

Hmmm. Ironeagle you're the founder of the Kafka's world tutv forum yes???
I hear what you're saying but you just have to look at posts both on your forum and digitalspy to see people are leaving.
That and the recent free ESPN weekend (to restore flagging membership) and limited general content compared with other options, would make me very nervous about signing up.
Even leaving tutv seems difficult for some.
Not for me thanks.
