The usual free delivery with Hexus or AV Forums otherwise it's £86.29 delivered.

This contains a Samsung HM500LI Hard drive (confirmed by several people). This is cheaper than the bare drive which is £91.61 normally (or £88.11 today on the today only page) and you also get an enclosure. The Samsung is 9.5mm and therefore PS3 compatible.

HUKD member spraint has confirmed that the enclosure cannot accommodate a larger 12.5mm drive, and as the Samsung is the only 9.5mm 500GB drive at the moment, it seems likely that LaCie will continue to use these drives unless they decide to change the size of the enclosure in the future.

The Samsung bare drive has its own 3 year warranty with Samsung. So you can open the enclosure and not have to worry about destroying it or invalidating the Lacie warranty (instructions kindly provided by spraint below).

Good find. I might go for the 320gb WD drive though as it is £45 after discounts and I would struggle to fill that let alone 500gb! But for those where size matters then this seems good!

will the PS3 not only see 320 of this.?

how can you be 100% certain that this contains the Samsung M6 drive? Western digital, Hitachi, and Fujitsu also make 2.5" 500gb hard drives which are all apart from the Samsung 12.5mm High.

I'd be very careful of this as the specs of the case state : H = 18mm, which could mean that you are getting either brand name.

I can't see Lacie just using one type of brand tbh

Good point. The person who posted on Hexus had a Samsung M6 in his one so I assumed they would all be the same, at least for the current batch Scan have. So it may be a bit of a gamble. Thanks for the information.

personally I would say it could contain any brand, would be a good deal if it was 100% that they just used the Samsung, as nothing is mentioned on scan or on the lacie website one would assume that it could be either brand in there.

sorry not having a pop at the deal, just don't want people having problems

Same price at BT/Dabs. Incl delivery is only £82.16 if you are not entitled to free delivery at Scan. Review on Dabs dates back to August and LaCie were using the Samsung then, so unlucky if you get a 12.5" drive now, but that would be a very tight fit even at 18mm depth. Mine has shipped. Will let you know what I get.

Thanks spraint. If you get a Samsung, could you take a look at the internals of the enclosure and see if you think a 12.5mm drive would fit in the 18mm casing? Cheers!

Got my drive this morning but it took a while to prise the end off.

There are two tabs: One under the large C in the LaCie logo and the other about the same distance in from the left after ignoring the cable slot. The bad news is that the tabs are glued onto the case so you have to employ brute force with a screwdriver to crack it open. Some stretching of the case may ensue, but it should still be usable.

Main thing is I got a Samsung HM500Li with warranty until 2011.

There really is no room in this casing for a 12.5" in its current design.

That's great news. Thanks for reporting back. I'll update the post again. Excellent instructions too
