I have a samsung i find it noisy, its a 250gb in a dell e520......?
#10
Just over 10 years ago i paid £220 for a 2Gb Seagate drive. How times change :(
#11
Wow, excellent price for a good size quiet drive. Storage costs do seem to be falling per gb at the moment. I think 500gb is still the sweet-spot in terms of £/gb.

Voted smokin' :)

£51.49 delivered from Amazon, for us Northern Irish folk who don't want to pay Scan's £20 delivery!

There were a series of samsung a few years back that were noisy but the majority are nearly silent

its a safe bet that recent ones are silent
#14
Thats crazy price. I so want one but must resist as I dont need this much space...
#15
Hot deal, bought one of these about 6months ago for 60 odd quid.. Great drives, silent, no problems at all. Ordered another for RAID :)
#16

Yep
Last week paid £440 for a 4GB Drive (Think I may have been conned)

Bought mine 2 months ago for £56 at Scan. Prices are dropping like crazy on HDDs!

Not as good as the 1tb ebuyer deal. the samsung f1 is superior in speed, and uses 3x334gb platters for fast access and speed, this drive doesnt.
#22
Note that this is not one of the Samsung Spinpoint F1 32MB Cache drives. The lowest size available on the F1's is 750GB I believe.

The Ebuyer drive was the 1TB F1 32MB Cache.

Which is why I ordered the 1Tb one off ebuyer, superior drive, not just in capacity.

hey guys.

I was wondering if you could help, I am looking at getting a hard drive.

I was wondering if I can use this as an external hard drive and what I would need to do in order to set it up.

Also wondering if there is a way to connect it to a tv and use it sort of as a media player.

External hard drive yes. You'll need a hard drive caddy like this Icybox IB-390St-US-B for example. You could probably get cheaper ones if you shopped around.

The cheapest way I can think of connecting it to a TV to use as a media player is by putting it in a DVD-recorder that can take a SATA II hard disk of this size. I'm sure someone will come up with something better!
#29
Cheers mate. That is great.

So can i get any casing that is designed for a 3.5" hard drive then.

I have looked around and I think this is cheaper than buying a ready built external hard drive of the same size. Would that be right.

Not any casing - yes, it needs to be able to house a 3.5" drive & handle a SATA II drive (check the specs when purchasing). Try to get something that'll keep it reasonably cool as well.

You're probably right that you could combine this with a suitable casing (or even an 'internal' caddy, if you have a free 5.25" external bay in your PC case) & get it for cheaper than buying an external hard drive on its own

And welcome to HUKD by the way :)

Yes, not a problem with a Mac.

Don't apologise for the 'many' questions - that's what we're here for :)
#33
For people asking about noise i always buy samsung drives for the fact that they are very quiet perfect for HTPC, found a useful program for switching the quiet drive functions on and off if you google Winaam.exe you can also give the performance a boost if you dont need it to be silent.

Depends on the E520 i would guess.

Mine came with 2 250gb seagates in.
